Public blog (or other) posts with reflections
I agree with Mike re:
"... the rush for tools may blind us to the importance of emotional and human connection on line.? Just the simple step of breaking a large group in Zoom to small breakouts on structured and relevant questions, and the judicious use of one or two tools to generate collaborative ideas ¨C these things are important and make a big difference to the engagement, memorability and impact of the learning online." ? I would like to start a thread with links to public posts about the practice of going online or running virtual meetings and events. Public posts because it's part of how? we are shaping a wider narrative about virtual meetings... and posts about practice because there is another place (in heaven) for tools and resources. |
Re: Technology Stewardship or "What Tool Should I use to do X?"
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýMy strengths are in F2F facilitation but for obvious reasons I am trying to catch up on what others are doing in the online space.? Heard lots about Slido, Mentimeter for online votes and capturing sentiment, Stormz and Mural for collaboration, - ?Klaxon, UMU, Mindmeister, PollEv etc I know I am just scratching the surface.? ? My question is that the rush for tools may blind us to the importance of emotional and human connection on line.? Just the simple step of breaking a large group in Zoom to small breakouts on structured and relevant questions, and the judicious use of one or two tools to generate collaborative ideas ¨C these things are important and make a big difference to the engagement, memorability and impact of the learning online. ? My concern is that we balance finding one or two appropriate tools with designing online processes that engage people not because they are clicking responses but because they are talking to and learning from each other.? I¡¯m a big fan of Liberating Structures but even when I have been to sessions where we experiment and learn I fear that too much emphasis is put on the technology of collaboration rather than the substance of what we are learning from the exchanges ? Best wishes ? Mike ?

Technology Stewardship or "What Tool Should I use to do X?"
When Etienne Wenger, John Smith and I wrote Digital Habitats: Stewarding Technology for Communities in 2008 (and yes, you can get a ) , I'm not sure we were thinking about Covid19. While the types and names of tools have morphed, the underlying process of technology stewardship is still relevant. The still hold some useful tips if you have reading time. ;-)
?the practice of of identifying, choosing, installing and supporting the use of tools for a group of people. Tech stewards know enough about technology and enough about their community/group/etc. to find the path between tech and its use by real people.? Right now people are asking for tool suggestions like crazy. I no longer keep track like I used to, but I know many of you do. This is a thread to ask/offer help on tool selection and use, and to share related resources.? I know there are some amazing tech stewards on this list.? Jump in. It is time to move from reading to doing... Nancy W |
Re: Welcome and Getting Started/Tech Help
Someone asked about how to start a new thread. Someone else asked about how to stop seeing all the messages. Like a silly person I forgot to look at the links at the bottom of all messages which give you all this information. Poor technology stewardship on my part, eh?? I put a screen shot here to make it easy. Of course mine reflects my email address. And starting new threads when you are starting a new topic is good email list hygiene. THANKS!

Thread for people looking for consulting support to move meetings online
Here is another thread that is coming alive in my world. There are some people with deep online facilitation expertise. Some technology stewards who have kept track of tool options as the field multiplies and morphed. Others with specific process expertise that have practice those processes online. Graphic recorders who digital and remote scribing. We have an initial spread sheet in the Liberating Structures community to make offers, but that is probably not enough.?
People need to find each other. Smaller NGOs won't have financial capability to hire consultants, but could work and gain value in a coaching community or community of practice. I also think we need a mechanism to learn with and from each other as we move quickly and deeply into this work.? So this thread is to think about how to operationalize this. I'm personally thinking about a collaborative model where orgs get help and coaching in front of other orgs needing help so we can network the learning. What are your ideas? Time to stop reading links and do things. Jump in! Nancy W |
Thread for People Trying to do Large (150+) Online Gatherings
#large
#facilitation
#meetingdesign
Based on requests coming in here and there, I think it might be useful to open a thread for particular kinds of events online. Those having to consider VERY large events - in the thousands, will be rare, but many are looking at the 150-500 size meetings. So let's dedicate this thread to asks for help, ideas, resources for larger events.? First off is a really tangible set of tips from Xplane.? |

Re: Experimental Event: Using Ecocyle to plan 4 going online, Friday March 13 7am PDT
Thanks for asking about process. Friday will be more Fishbowl, Thursday with TRIZ will be breakouts. So alas, I asked for help for the wrong one.? Elana is recording I can still use a tech facilitator?on Thursday. I am working on slides, flow doc and report out templates and will have them ready by end of Wednesday. I'll have the GDocs etc set up.? I now am going to co-facilitate a now blended online/F2F event for the next 1.5 days so I'll have stories and experiences to share over the weekend. "we have to make it seem kind, positive & helpful to stay home"
I wanted to share this calm, thoughtful, and socially responsible messaging about moving employees online at home when practical. Similar messaging might help when talking to people wondering about whether or not to hold physical gatherings. The writer is CEO of a tech company based in New York. -- Pete
Starting today, we¡¯re telling all our workers to work from home at @glitch. I¡¯m encouraging other business leaders to do the same immediately for every employee who can. I wanted to share a little bit about the rationale & logistics here. First, I want to clearly acknowledge the privilege that we have working in tech, and that we see in adjacent industries like media and finance. We¡¯re fortunate to even be able to consider this choice, so we have an obligation to act. In nearly every country around the world, we¡¯ve seen a reluctance to act until it¡¯s too late, often resulting in disaster. That¡¯s true even in countries with paid sick leave, universal healthcare & competent heads of state. I expect the United States will experience the same failures as other countries, but worse. We have fewer hospital beds & tests per capita. So, the key thing we can do to mitigate that is enable social distancing. Employers have more power here than almost any other entities. At our company, we've been able to move quickly to distributed work because much of our team was working remotely already. Yesterday, we asked workers based in our HQ to take all their necessary equipment home and to make sure they had an appropriate workspace. I know this solution doesn't accommodate gig workers, or people who work in retail or other jobs where they have to be physically present. We don't have a social safety net for them, so we have to reduce the risk for them by distancing ourselves. This work is what many describing as an effort to "flatten the curve". We're not saying millions of people won't get infected, we're saying we want to slow the rate so everyone doesn't get sick *all at once* and overwhelm our healthcare systems (and civil society's resilience). Just from an execution standpoint, @operaqueenie gathered some very good resources if your organization is new to remote work. Our particular processes at Glitch live in our handbook (with more updates to come soon): But at the highest level, we have to make it seem kind, positive & helpful to stay home and go beyond handwashing to really reduce social spread. This is about shifting culture to normalize a huge change quickly. Doing so can save lives. Let's get to work. |
Re: Experimental Event: Using Ecocyle to plan 4 going online, Friday March 13 7am PDT
Hi Nancy,?
As promised: I'll take on the task of creating the break-out rooms for Friday's meeting.? Three questions:? 1) Do we have a document with a flow/schedule? (incl. size of break-out groups...) 2) What about having a Google Doc for written harvest? I am happy to set one up, just need to know whether it makes sense or not.? 3) Do we want/need a participants list?? Great to hear that people have stepped in to share their work!! |
