Re: Unusual brightening of comet C/2023 Q1
¿ªÔÆÌåÓý
Hi Thomas and Denis,
I imaged C/2023Q1 earlier this morning with my 315mm reflector from my remote site under approximately?SQM 21.7 skies. I stacked 20 x 60-sec exposures. Comphot gives mag 15.55 (GaiaG) in a 0.8' aperture.
?
However,?if I highly contrast stretch the image, there is a vague, very faint,?large coma of about 4' dia buried in the noise. This large faint coma is way too faint and noisy for Comphot to detect, as I believe the software sets the measuring aperture based
on a predetermined?level of signal above the background noise.?I suspect many comets might show a?faint extended coma if the contrast is stretched to extreme levels.
?
I've attached my highly contrast stretched image for info.
Peter?

Hi again Thomas,
Thanks for posting this image. I agree it does show an extended coma. When was this taken and with what instumentation? As you say heavily processed, would such faint feature be visible to an observer at a dark sky site. I know that there are obsevers who can see vaery faint features that others cannot. I remember Brian Marsden commenting that George Alcock was able to see very faint comet comas and tail details(real) that were not seen by others. ? Comet observing is so heavily influenced by observing conditons, whether it be imaging or visually. Why do you think we are seeing this extensive coma, there has been no outburst of the central condensation. When 12p had central condensation outbursts there seemed to be no substantial increase in the total integrated magnitude. With this comet, are we seeing an increase in the total integrated magnitude without any outburst of the central condensation? How are we seeing material being released from the central condensation into the coma to increase its brightness and overall size without any sign of increased activity from the central condensation. With 29p we see outbursts measured using small apertures which then produce material to populate the coma and make it larger and brighter and expanding. Perhaps we can hear from some of the comet scientists in anwering these questions. As I said comets eh! Best wishes Denis ??????? ------ Original Message ------ ??????? From: t.lehmann@... ??????? Pretty ugly though, but it might serve for ? illustration purposes. ? Something I'd add to my "total" coma mesurement within 5': the brighness ? measurement (statistical) uncertainty is about 0.15mag. ? Best wishes ?
