Thanks Ruth, and to everyone else. You are correct. It didn't occur to me that it would say nurse as she is only 13. Obviously nurse meant something different back then? She is living with her auntie and his family, including young children. I would guess that maybe she looks after the children? I found a dissertation on-line specifically about domestic nurses in the 19th?century, She states, "The nurse most commonly invoked at this period was one who cared for the family's young children?.

I have a thirteen year female ancestor on the 1861 census. I am unable to work out what the words are in the rank/profession box.?
Any ideas?
