Old GG-1
Don't believe it to be George Stock or Schrader which are brass Believe it to be FAMOCO Famous Model Co which has die cast body with odd pantagraphs made in kit form from "cadmium" you assemble. Best I can do at this time with my medical problem. Jim H

Sean: there are several early manufacturers of cast GG-1's. Varney of course but yours looks a bit less well detailed (?) but it's tough to say with my old eyes. Other mfr's. are Winton & also Schraeder as I recall. Some old (1940's +) MR ads might help... I don't have any that old anymore. I hope this helps & good luck. Mystery GG1
Hi Guys! I have a New Year's mystery locomotive here... It is a die cast metal GG1. It does not appear to be the typical GHC Japan import and it definitely is not the Penn Line version. Please look at the listing photos closely! Note the brass chassis power truck & 1 dummy truck and the die cast pantograph frames. The pantographs even seem to be not typical. Any input is greatly appreciated! Thanks, Sean "If everything seems under control, you're not going fast enough!" - Mario Andretti!

Steam diagnostics ? Oh yeah ! 3
It's a formula for insanity . It'll drive you to the brink , and when you find it ? Joy ! That is an excellent idea , swapping the chassis out . You're eliminating the possible problems . Good thinking on your part ! Springing [lead truck / drawbar ] can give grief also , my favorite choice is the brass frame . But that's just me ! It takes courage to model steam ! Henry

Adding weight to a locomotive question 10
For those of you have been following along the "Adding DCC" thread that has been going on here for a couple of days... I had the H9 at the club tonight and it ran fairly well. But here is what I noticed, the drivers are slipping. If I add a steady finger to the locomotive, applying light preasure, the locomotive takes off. Bowser no longer sells the weight for the H9/E6 boiler. So, I was wondering what you guys use to add weight to the locomotive's boiler? Thanks, Mark

Athearn Genesis 5
The other night I dug my old Athearn Genesis USRA Pacific out to test run it on a friend's DCC layout. I hadn't been out of the box in at least 5 years. When we tried to run it, it had definite hitch in its get-along, forward and reverse. When I tried to hold it down a bit to see if I could spot the problem, the motor kept running but the drivers stopped turning. Another friend said that these models were notorius for cracking either the idler gear or the dirver gear. I haven't had time to try and disassemble it yet, but was wondering if others had experience with these models and what I should (or shouldn't) do. I see that NWSL offers replacement gears. Mantua Mike project 6
Just came across this on Ebay. A while back someone had asked about possible kit-bash projects for the Mantua Mike. This loco looks really close. Ebay # 200873760782

Mantua Pacific project
How about Item number: 221173035725 for a nice looking Pacific, obviously by the same modeler as the previous mentioned Mike. This appears to have the enclosed worm but with a new motor judging by the motors length. And as it is dcc equipped it most likely is a can motor of some sort. Not as much work as on the Mike but it does have some added detail and is nicely weathered. Vintage gas station photos 7
Happy New Year, friends! Vintage gas station photos Scroll left to right if needed to see the complete pictures. It looks like this first service station picture shows the owner with a team of 17 people working for him?? write some info 5
I hope to get back to writing a little. I had been screwed up by having Doctors prescribed to much Percocet for pain and boy did it foul me up. I thought I was having a brain problem. I couldn't write my name, remember things or spell. Trying to get it straightened out. Coming around . No to good at writing yet but going to try some small answers. Miss not written. Later Jim H

Adding DCC to Bowser, Pennline, John English, or Varney Locomoti
Hello list, I've added Digitrax decoders to several Bowser engines. So far, I've worked successfully on a K4s, L1s, and H9s (the model now represents an H10s, but that's another story). I set aside an I1sa project because the resin tender I tried was giving me fits, but that's not a Bowser problem. I haven't had a situation (yet) where the DCC installation itself caused problems with pulling power....I haven't had to cut away boiler weights in my installations so far. I have found that adding electrical pickups to the pilot truck of the Bowser K4s (and also the Mantua Pacific) really helps....I didn't get as big a benefit when I tried to add pickup to the lead trucks of my H9s and L1s. In general, DCC-equipped models do better with additional pickup points. As far as starting voltage and maximum voltage, I haven't changed any of the settings on my Digitrax decoders....their manual has directions for changing Configuration Variable (CV) 02 (starting voltage), CV03 (acceleration rate), and CV05 (maximum voltage) amongst others. Perhaps your decoder is set for a lower maximum voltage? I uploaded photos of my L1s Mike as fitted with a Digitrax DZ125 decoder to the photos section in a file titled "Doug Kisala's Kitbashes." You can also try the direct link below...you may need to copy and paste it. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/yardbirdtrains/photos/album/725275325/pic/list On my I1sa project, I purchased an aftermarked resin tender to replace the Bowser (nee Varney) 32 foot tender which had worked well for me. In this case, I could not get the resin tender to reliably pick up electricity, so I'll be reverting to the less accurate, but dead reliable Varney tender or perhaps a Bowser 130F82 tender in the future.
