I've just found you mentioned in your first post, about the EL backlighting mod. Sounds a bit troublesome as you say, although the result looks nice.

That page also links to about a not very successful side-lighting attempt. I think the author tried to use the existing gap in the metal frame around the LCD instead of opening a larger gap, and also did not use any kind of light diffuser.?
