I would be surprised if you would make it on the HF bands to someone just 20
miles away !
Try the lower bands where there is plenty of groundwave, 160m is ideal !
The FC40 is a good little ATU, but do remember that for best results keep
the wire on the GROUND side longer than that on the ANTENNA side !

i purchased a new FT-897D and FC-40 a month or so ago.
Played with long wires, verticals etc and had no contacts on HF
while using the FC-40. Read the manual and followed the directions.
Can't even reach a fellow ham 20 miles away on HF.
The FT-897 works great on 2M & 70 cm.
Having doubts about buying the FC-40 (and even the FT-897).
Has anyone else had difficulties in initially setting up their FC-40?
