FT847 Remote control on a budget.
? ? ? Hello, Justin thought I would drop those who may be interested a quick note on a project I¡¯ve been working on. Blighted by equipment that simply doesn¡¯t work, period or stops working a few weeks after purchase I decided to partake on a project to use a WizNet W5100 IC and Arduino Mega 2560 WiFi to act as a TCP/IP bridge. I already made my K3NG rotator controller wireless a few weeks ago and I can now control my G5500 rotator from anywhere in the world. With that said my FT847 proved more of a challenge. It is on a remote relay and powered on at the push button and just the PSU is turned on remotely. With my current setup I now have full control of my Satellite system from anywhere in the world and the ports are available to me locally (or via VPN). Any program I see fit just requires virtual serial ports to speak to my station from afar. If anyone is interested then let me know here as the interface should work with any radio (or equipment) that uses RS232 for communication. CIV for Icom gear is a little more tricky. The point of this thread is that commercial RS232 to TCP/IP use hardware resolution for the stack. Using a software/hardware has its drawbacks. If anyone is interested in making this and the code then let me know and I shall produce a full write up but it¡¯s still a work in progress. Lastly, without some kind of RTSP/RTMP you are stuck for streaming the radios audio. However, I have a solution for that too!! and it¡¯s low latency and just a little jitter. The software is free and works peer to peer without any server or any subscriptions. You can also add as many people you like to your audio stream and then shuffle group latency as more people join. Just the group name and a password are needed for others to join. In short, the whole project costs less that ?15 or $20 and about 20 minutes of time to program and wire up. The downside is you will need a Raspberry Pi 3B+ (minimum) for audio streaming. The good news is that you can then use the RPi to also act as a VPN server, PiHole server, streaming server and more with little memory usage. You will also need a RS3232 (3.3v logic version of the MAX232). But they are like ?0.70p or $1 on a PCB module with already built in chip capacitors for the +\-12vdc logic. As the MAX3232 is smart enough to act as a logic buffer depending on the VCC. Eg: 5vdc at VCC will make the logic 5v. 3.3v at VCC is 3.3v logic. The code also benefits from a Telnet interface and web interface so you can change baud, parity, data bits, stop bits and flow control from a web Interface. The telnet part is a bit wobbly and needs work but the defaults are 57600,8N2 which most of us probably use. Final word! Getting the FT847 to open the CAT port is no simple task remotely. Yaesu uses a 5 bit hex format with an OP code. The reply code is equally as squiffy. I¡¯ve had the Moxa-DE311 and WizNet Wiz125SR and both had issues making CAT work because the radio simply does not listen until the 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 turns CAT on and 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x80 turns CAT off. The problem is if CAT is off it kinda of also doesn¡¯t listen to commands to turn itself on!! From my tests this part requires some very accurate timing for some reason and software serial simply does not cut it in Arduino speak. Only the hardware UART port of a Mega2560 worked with problems. No transmit audio
3
We have an FT-847 at our NWS office we want to use as an HF SSB rig. The problem is no transmit audio. In AM mode we have a carrier but no modulation. No output at all in either USB or LSB mode. RF power is at max, mic gain has no effect. We've tried two different mics with no luck. The Moni function does echo audio from the mic. I have also tried resetting the unit (Menu option #39) with no change. I have not tied FM or any VHF/UHF modes (we already have sufficient radios for those frequencies) so have no idea of their status. Unfortunately we did not get any manuals with the radio and the only schematics and board layouts I've found are low res and virtually useless. Before I crack the case open I thought I'd check to see if anyone has seen this before. And does anyone have a copy or a high res (1200 dpi+) scan of the service manual? I'm willing to pay a reasonable price for one. TIA.

No transmit audio
5
Hi, all, We have an FT-847 at our NWS station with no transmit audio. We are using it only as an HF SSB rig for conversing with the National Hurricane Net and other NWS offices around us. No digital, not using it on VHF/UHF.. The problem we have with it is no transmit audio. We get a carrier in AM mode but no modulation. No output at all on SSB. I've tried two mics with no luck. The Moni functon does have audio so it is getting into the audio section. RF output is a full throttle and Mic gain has no effect. It's a simple setup. Audio and PTT through the mic jack. No CAT control, no digital - just using it as a SSB station right now. I would appreciate any suggestions before I crack the case. It's going to be a bit difficult since I don't have the manual and can't find a readable schematic and board layout on the web (too low resolution to be helpful). I would also appreciate a copy or high res scan (1200dpi+) of the manual (willing to pay a reasonable price). TIA for any help you can provide.

FT-847 Frequency Extension Jumper Documentation
I e-mailed Yaesu USA recently, looking for documentation on the FT-847 jumper settings. They courteously replied, saying that the radio is no longer supported and gave me a link for foxtango.org. Further searching turned up a mention of an old Colin Lowe (G1IVG) website. Further searching found his current website at http://www.g1ivg.com/ft847.htm The website has tables documenting the frequency ranges of the different jumper settings. It is very nicely organized.

Excessively low reception and transmission
14
Hi, I have an FT-847 that appears to have no TX or RX on any band or mode, but it transmits at much less than a watt. When I put an antenna on it, I could hear myself very low on another radio in my shack. Likewise, when I transmitted with the other radio, I could hear myself on the FT-847, but very low. Any suggestions on what could be wrong?

Early model CAT question
2
One of my buddies is selling his 847, but it's one of the unidirectional models. Will I still be able to take advantage of doppler tracking and digital modes with it? Or do either of these require bi-directional CAT control? I'm not too pressed about seeing the frequency on the screen, just about it actually controlling the radio. Needless to say I've been spoiled with USB CAT control with my 7300 for some time now.

I want to use a tuner for my ft847!
9
I want to use a tuner for my ft847! Whilst I know the FC 20 is used with this radio, I don¡¯t have one but I do have the FC 40 but I can¡¯t seem to find any information confirming that this Radio works with any other tuner. Maybe somebody has some information out there or do I just go ahead and try it?? I have a friend who might buy my FT847 and he has a Mat40 tuner Which has beenUsed on A Yaesu FT891 and FT857 And yet again, I cannot confirm whether this will work for him. Any thoughts appreciated thank you

Hi Guy's n Gals. I recently purchased a FL-7000 & was wanting to interface it with my FT-847. Was wanting to know if anyone has interfaced their FT-847 with a FL-7000 & could let me know the pin-outs for a interface cable, or where I may be able to get one from. Your help is greatly appreciated. Best 73 Mal J Whitby VK2MW

disable ptt function on rear DATA jack in the presence of isolation transformers?
5
Afternoon all , Checking my understanding of a perceived challenge here with you all: before buying the bits and prototyping a cable... It seems that plugging the 847's rear 3.5mm data jack into anything with audio isolation transformers at the far end (thereby effectively dc grounding the tip of the 3.5mm plug) forces the rig into constant TX irrespective of any remote PTT settings (correct?) And therefore, interfaces like the SCU-17 which feature such isolation, require something like a 10nF blocking cap (depicted as C-BLOCK --||-- below) like (hope this scales) : RIG END PC INTERFACE END |----------------------------------------| TIP |RING|EARTH|------------------|EARTH|RING|TIP| |----------------------||-----------------------------| C-BLOCK inline to stop this constant PTT (correct?) is there any other way (I cannot see one in the menu?) to disable that data port PTT without rig surgery ? many thanks and 73 de 'CQU

TX power meter in HF AFSK data mode mode ??
4
Hi All, A dumb question perhaps on the surface, but when transmitting AFSK data via the rear port of the 847 And not using CAT mode for PTT (as I gather CAT mode expects mic audio through the mic socket not the rear port) should I actually be seeing RF power going out on the wattmeter ? or just the [USB] [CAT] and [DATA] indicators please ? set up is Xubuntu desktop---scu17---FT847 {Hamlib} Tuner unplugged (tick in the box) * CAT function is working tuning the rig fine * SCU-17 getting audio to the linux PC * SCU-17 is pushing audio from linux to the 847 (verified with a double headphone adapter, and headphones . Good levels (can nearly blow my ears off) PC to radio. * PTT is keying, [USB][DATA] indicators turns on, but nothing deflecting the wattmeter even with the SCU-16 volume level at MAX , and no replies to my CQ's ;-) have I missed a setting perhaps?, a rig fault ? or some other overlooked factor ? Many thanks in advance de CQU

FT847 Data Problem
5
Hi All Thanks for adding me to the group. I have a problem with my FT847 when trying to run FT8 on VHF. I have been using the FT847 to run 2m FT8 with a G4ZLP interface into the Data jack on the rear of the radio with no issues for a few years. Recently, the waterfall would occasionally go blank, but then start working again. A few weeks ago it stopped receiving and hasn¡¯t worked since. I suspected the cable, and have replaced with a new one from G4ZLP today. I still cant get any RX on the waterfall. I looked in the settings of WSJT and see that Transmit Audio Source is set to Front/Mic but is greyed out and unable to change to Rear/Data which I would have expected the setting to be. I have not changed this setting, and as above, I have used this Cable/rear panel configuration since going on 2m FT8. Is it possible that the rear data jack has gone faulty? Should the Transmit Audio Source be set REAR / DATA and if so how when greyed out? I have put a wire into the HF Ant port in an attempt to see if it will RX anything, I am HEARING 20m FT8 but not a jot on the waterfall. I have also run HF from my FT5000 on the VHF port of the interface and that decodes so I cant see it being the interface at fault. Running WSJT-X v2.7.1 rc7 Any help is appreciated 73 Pete G4RRM

Help with Yaesu FT-847 please
Hi all, I have a strange problem with an FT-847 and hopefully someone has seen this before and can help: I have an FT-847 that works fine EXCEPT for an issue with turning it on or off. I replaced the power switch but the issue I have has nothing to do with that which I was hoping it did. When I connect my power supply to the radio and turn on the power supply without turning on the radio I can hear what sounds like a relay click in the radio but nothing happens, just the click. Then when I push in the power button to turn the radio ON nothing happens for maybe5-10 seconds and then the radio comes on and works. If I push the power switch to turn the radio OFF then the display still stays lit up, display looks fine but nothing works, no buttons, no changing of frequency with the VFO, it's in a catatonic state. If I push the power switch back in again to turn the radio ON (even though it's all lit up) then a few seconds later sound and all controls etc come back to life. If I leave the radio on when it's working and turn off the power supply of course the radio shuts off and when I turn the power supply back on when the power button on the radio is in the ON position it starts right away and performs fine. Any help appreciated. Thanks, Adam Adam Farber W4AJF Cooper City, FL

NICE FT-847 FOR SALE
I've decided to part with my 847. Ser. # 3G760154. It is in great condition. Everything works as new. Looks nearly new also. I have the original manual, power cable and hand mic. Also included is the elusive odd 5 pin din HF amp keying cable and a very nice vinyl, embroidered cover. I do not have the original boxes so I'd prefer a local pick up or a meet and greet at a reasonable and agreed upon distance. Priced for a quick sale at $575. Shipping would be extra and I'd have to round up some boxes. PayPal is preferred. Email offers off the reflector pls. Thanks all & 73, Butch...K3AFR (good on QRZ) or: k3afr@...

NR Failure in SSB/CW
Hello 847 owners. I have some troubles with my 847. I experience a low volume in rx SSB, that I fix with a capacitor bypass , but remain a fault in DSP-NR only in SSB and CW (FM/AM works well). When the NR switch is depressed the signal disappear in the speaker (Only in the AF stage - Smeter ok), I supposed a fault in IC BU4066 SSB/CW/AM/FM switch but, after the replacement of IC Q1087 the NR fault persist. Following the schematic another IC ( Q1115) act like switch between input/output of dsp, but before desoldering (SMD is not easy to desolder), I would like to know if somebody have fixed this kind of fault. Service manual supplied from Yaesu is very poor over this. Many thanks for Your support over this topic. 73 Giuliano IZ3PSL

No modulation on HF?
26
I have seen some 847 with the same problem, and there's a common thing, they all where using some interface for FT8. Maybe an excesive audio or impedance problems, I dont know, fry something related to the modulation stage. There is a carrier, algo works in 2m, but in HF is gone, so SSB obvioulsy wont work. Have a tech friend with 3 847 with the same problem and cant proceed properly because cant find a decent service manual. Any help will be appreciated.
