You should check the serial number of your 847 against the version chart (somewhere on the 'Net - I forget where). The early versions could only be driven from CAT, not read from. Not being able to

I think you will find it is the PTT you are not supposed to use with an amplifier. This is a low level, low current switch and meant for foot pedals as an input. The Standby socket however can switch
