I've used a Serial to USB cable to connect the rig to the Raspberry Pi
and the laptop. In both cases, the 'CAT' comes up on the rig, but
programs fail to complete the connection.

The Serial number that I made reference to was from a post:
"...Yaesu appears to use the following format for serial numbers on their
amateur products:

Year of manufacture-Month of manufacture-Production Run-Individual Unit
number, where the month of manufacture is offset by 2, so "C" means January,
"D" means February, "E" means March, and so forth.

Example: 8G051234 = 1998, May (fifth month, or "G"), Production Run 05, unit
#1234 in this run.

One key serial number range is 8G05. This seems to be the point at which
Yaesu had corrected the bi-directional CAT issue and made some other
improvements. This version was made in May 1998. Later serial numbers (e.g.,
8L09nnnn) all seem to have incorporated the earlier improvements plus new
ones...."

That would mean that the port was unidirectional prior to this, my
serial number is "4M950027", hence I was wondering what data is that
the rig was sending back to the CommsTest program when tuning across a
band.

As far as I can tell, your FT847 is a november 2004 model which makes it one of the last ones (2005) produced.

I know that this is an obvious question, but are you using a null modem cable to connect from the PC to radio?

I've been using my Ft-847 for 2-3 years with a null modem cable on HRD and have had no problems.

I let the computer boot up, turn on the radio, then open HRD. No problem.

the HF mod it self looks pretty simple??
since the rig has the AK emergency frequency in the firmware
I am supposing that it must have? the band pass filters in place to cover 60M??
or are we going to cook relays and the finals ?

Hi Frank

I used the TC1001 adjustment several years ago.? No big deal once you find TC1001.? I my case I was off about 1700 hz on 432.? Got it alot close but without the dropper test equipment, can't say exactly.
Couple of hints.? Make sure the Ft847 is fully warned up as there is a slight drift from a cold start.? Can't remember exactly where the TC control is located but remember you remove the bottom cover to access.? Think it near the front, but not sure.?

60 Meter Transmit Mod Info Wanted

 

Hi folks, I just found this group and am a newbie to it.
I have owned an FT-847 since new from 1999 and would like to know how to open the transmit for 60 Meters. As you know, 60 M was unavailable for use back then unless you were authorized for MARS/CAP, but the FCC has opened up this 5 MHz band in 2003 or 2004 for amateur use per the band plan.
I have seen several mods that seem different from each other. Does anyone have a known reliable mod for a U.S. FT-847?

Yes 250Hz are few but still too many ...
Has anyone used the system described here or knows if it can produce problems, if there are other solutions or if this is the solution?

It doesn't seem that complicated with the right gear.
I have read about this solution on several sites, but before doing so I ask for more information.

Yes, of course it is.

The adjustment is very touchy and if you are not careful or you will make things worse.

Hi, as stated before, a crystal, manufactured to be used at room temperature is not very well suited to put in an oven.
Below you see a typical stability range of such a crystal.

If you put this crystal in an oven at 40 degrees, you're trying to keep it stable at a non-stable temperature. Not exactly a smart thing to do.
Crystals to put in a 40 degrees oven are MADE for this, they will show the flat part of the curve at 40 degrees, not at 20 degrees.

Hi Bill and thanks for the reply. I had a little nose inside and injected a smallish signal and found that there was stray RF on the IF from the G4HUP PAT board I fitted many years ago.?
? I feel a bit silly now as the PAT board has worked flawlessly but for some reason I was getting some IMD and broadcast FM from the 3m band. I really love my FT847 and I have a spare (A2 US Import and C2 UK specifications) and I really don’t want to see them damaged. So I’ve taken out both PAT board (IF tap and 2nd receiver) and they are now in the trash. The main problem is the IF was being overloaded even though I was using the 2nd receiver PAT board and not the IF tap for Panadapter.

? Thanks for the heads up but this is resolved and I doubt I will be re-visiting the PAN adapter anytime soon.

Before I tear my radio apart to resolve this I wondered if anyone had pointers. I know the FT897 used to suffer with S9 all the time due to the 455khz ceramic filters going bad but don’t think the FT847 uses them.

? Any help would be really appreciated.
