FT-847 Digital Modes

Hello All,

Before I shell out the $$$ for a SCU-17 or SignalLink I have a couple questions.

When using the Data IN/OUT port on back of rig do you need to also wired in the PTT circuit shown on page 19 of the User Manual.
I ask because my logging and digital modes software will key radio via CAT.

Or is it mandatory that when using HF Data Port PTT has to be controlled via the Data Port.

I would like to use the radio on VHF/UHF data modes also and I know that going to be on the mini din.

I went thru my spare parts box today and tried to wire up the Easy Digi interface to see how the radio would do on some HF FT-8. I had audio from rig to pc no problem along with PTT from HRD CAT or WSJT-X. I just could not get audio from the pc back into radio and Tx the audio. It would key radio but showed no output power on radio meter,In line power meter.

Re: Molex plug for FT847 power.

Hello Jim

The Molex 39-03-6064 was a bust. The pitch is 6.7mm as the rig's pitch is 6.0mm

I did manage to crimp the crap connector female pins with a .100" crimper and they now fit nicely in the stock rig connector.
Took the new gold plated female's and used the crap housing and now the rig doesn't cut out when you wiggle the power
plug. By the way the crap connector's female pins are the same as what I received today (to big in diameter).

Not sure what to tell you on finding a male connector like what's in the rig as they seem to be allusive.

Hello Micky.

I cheat.? I go to our local Hobby Town and get a piece of K&S brass tubing that just fits over the end of the male or female pin I want to remove and slide it down so it pushes the barbs down and the pin can be removed.

Thank you.

sad part is a single pin cost more than the housing lol

Hello Pat.

I need the socket that mates with the power cord end (or same as socket on the back of the radio) so I can make an adapter cable to try and fix an Icom that uses a 4 pin Molex!? Not sure why they used 4 pin on them when most YaeCommWood rigs of that era all used the 6 pin plug!? I did not want to chop the one off the cord on the power supply since I still need it to power the FT840 and FT847.

Thank you.

Hello Jim

I just ran through this problem with an Icom and ordered a few connectors to only find out they were crap. Hopefully someone here
will have some insight on some good ones. This is why I try and save everything however when I went to power up the Icom on
the work bench I couldn't find a cord. Ended up robbing one from an old Kenwood. My problem is that I give away too much
surplus and must have given my last one away. I would also be very interested on a good source for those 6 pin connectors.
Purchased a dozen 4 pin power connectors 10+ years ago when they were new to me and they have been serving me well.
Never thought I would have problems with the 6 pin connectors.

Hello Sjoerd.

That (AliExpress part) is the wrong end.? I need the one that mates to it.? I think (hope) the Molex 39-03-6064 you linked at Mouser is the one I need.

Thank you.

Can someone give me the Molex/Waldon part number for the power plug for the FT847 (and cord mounted socket for it if you know)?? I see places that sell the cable but nowhere do I find the part number (even on the part) so I suspect they are Chinese clones.

At any rate,? does anyone know the part number for the power plug?

Thank you.

Re: Molex plug for FT847 power.

You could also try the rear panel connector for FT857 or FT897, seeing as they are the same item, and more likely to be available

Set the level for good speech on mic gain then leave it there, pad down input level to no more than 5mV rms

Re: FT8 and ALC

I set the audio level to just barely cause the ALC to move when in transmit mode.? I set the power control on the radio to give me the desired watts out.? I use this same method for all of the digital modes I use.

Not sure that is how others do it but I've managed 7 bands DXCC and 8 bands WAS so far with digital modes, so it seems to work for me.? I've never had anyone inform me that my signal was causing issues.??
