Re: 158 members

I got mine a couple of years back and the only problem I have is that it needs an alignment. The display is off frequency 50 - 500 hz depending on the band. I've just learned to live with it and keep a notebook to remind me how much it is off on each band. It seems that none of the folks that work on these here in the US are accepting any new work. I just don't have the equipment to do the procedure myself and Yeasu won't do it anymore. (I have an equally old "I" brand that they were happy to do it for their radios.)? I like having buttons and switches over menus to control the rig.?

The big problem is not enought time to use it here lately. Too much work not enough play time....

I just got mine a few months ago.

My best friend (now SK) had one and used it for sattelite work.

I would like to use mine with JTDX but am having difficulty with rig control.

Since I bought it, I have used it for repeater work (over 100 miles away) as well as VHF/UHF contests. Works great with amplifiers.

I use mine daily as my primary shack rig.? Mostly 2m FM, but I work all the other bands as well.

My gripes with the rig:? One is that the "Fast" button's action is backwards when using the Band up and down buttons.? I typically have Fast turned on when spinning the dial, hardly ever needing to get down to fine adjustments.? Then when I hit the up or down band buttons, it jumps from HF to VHF, instead of from 80m to 40m.

Also no VOX, but that's only because the operation of CAT with the digital modes is utterly broken.? When the rig is keyed from CAT, the audio comes from the Mike input, not the jacks on the back of the rig.? It seems like they were trying to be "smart" when selecting the audio source depending on where PTT was keyed (which itself is brain damaged when one is using a sound card to drive both HF and Packet modes), but totally ignored that computer-driven modes can use CAT for PTT.? If it had VOX, and if VOX payed attention to the back jacks, that would have simplified a lot of wiring in the shack.

Other than that, a great rig!

Sorry, I misunderstood.

My radio has voice, not vox.

Re: 158 members

Bought mine in the 90's and use it regularly mainly for 6 and 2 Meter SSB and WSJT-X. It has had very few problems over the years. Lost memories and the memory switch?is goofy. Still a good? HF back up rig and I take it into the field annually for Field Day.....I might have replaced?it if the IC-970 would have had 6 meters but since it doesn't the FT-847 remains my GO TO for 6 and 2.

Hi Joe
I have been using the 847 for over a year and it has worked very well for me. I do have rotatable antennas but I talk to many hams using the egg eaters with good success. I would suggest that you do use some form of computer tracking program if only for the Doppler corrections. It will save you endless headaches getting started. I have used SatPc32 and use it when I am roving with a handheld antenna… it gives you an extra hand when you do t have to worry about timing! Good luck and see you soon on the birds!?

Hi Richard,

Hope to hear you on the satellites soon!? They are a lot of fun.

Yes, the FT847 is still a good satellite radio. It does full duplex and has decent power levels on both 2m and 70cm.? Hears good on both bands as well.? I have a FT847 and still have good luck on the satellites with it.?

The eggbeater antennas should work well also.? I have talked with quite a few operators on the satellites who are using eggbeaters.

One good email list for satellite operations is the Amsat-BB list.? You can learn more about it at:

Hi Rob,

Well if receive is working, the sound card is likely ok.? But 2m FT8 is still using SSB, not FM, right?? I believe the DIN connector aims at the FM world (i.e. for packet radio), so it might be taking audio from the DIN (because PTT is there), but delivering it to the wrong place.

Try this...? Put the rig in FM mode, minimum power, and see if you're getting the AUDIO out (check with an HT).? I bet you do.? That would confirm that you need to be connecting into the TRS jack.

If so, take the PTT line and run it through a 2.2k resistor to the Tip of the TRS plug, with the audio going through a small DC blocking cap (0.1uf or so; not critical).? Ring of the TRS to Line-in on the audio card.

Good luck!

Still struggling Greg....... I've wired up a 6pin DIN for the packet socket....as I only want FT8 for 2m.

I now have PTT working via RTS and CAT only reading frequency not controlling PTT line.

However, I still cant get any TX power out. Its still as if the audio isnt coming out of sound card.

I've just ordered another USB soundcard to see if that is the problem

RX works OK.
