Re: Couple of questions

Congrats on the new rig!? Great radio, but it has it's quirks.? You've run into my #1 peeve.

There are two jacks on the back for interfacing with digital stuff.? The DIN port is for VHF/UHF packet, and the TRS is for the HF modes.? So if you have a single computer doing both with a sound card, it will take some careful wiring with appropriate use of DC blocking capacitors.? The issue is that the PTT functions for the two are separate, and the radio is trying to be smart and only takes audio from whichever port is being keyed.? And just to complicate things further, the PTT on DIN is a single purpose pin, while PTT is combined with the mike audio on the TRS.? To be fair, when the radio was created, packet and HF modes were typically built into separate boxes, and so I presume they were trying to make things easier for us.? In the end, it turned out rather different.

Final warning, the CAT interface works well if you have the newer version of the radio (do a search for the S/N boundary), but for some reason I can't fathom, keying the rig with CAT takes audio from the front mike connector.? That's the last place I'd expect audio to be coming from if I key the radio from a computer.? You really need to use the various PTT lines instead, as using the mike input in order to use CAT has its own issues with setting the audio level.

Sorry, can't help on the Service menu.? Good luck!

Hello to the group,

Just took delivery of an 847. Great radio.

I'm just in the process of getting everything hooked up, CAT, digital modes etc. I plugged my signal lines into the DATA in/out jack and for some reason the radio goes into TX mode. Have to look into that. Question # 1: Can I use the PACKET jack for digital modes such as FT8 or AFSK RTTY? Or is it strictly for packet operation?

I'm trying to get into the service menu to align the shift control as it sits at about 1 o'clock when both USB and LSB have the same tone. I've tried the UP/DWN/FAST on the mic while turning on the radio but the regular display just keeps coming up. The up and down buttons are working fine on the mic, but when I press the fast button, the FAST icon does not appear on the screen. Possibly a bad wire inside the mic?? Should the FAST icon come on when activating it from the mic?

Everything else appears to be fine, showing full power on HF, 6 and 2m. My 440 antenna has a PL259 on cable, working on getting an adapter!

Any pointers appreciated.

Thank you,
