Henry WALLAN ca1794-1856
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýG'day Dianne & Jim. ? Greetings from Kangaroo Island (KI) just off the coast of Adelaide, the capital of South Australia. ? Henry WALLAN was also sometimes known by the Christian names of Robert or Harry.? His surname has various forms including WALLEN, ?WHALLEN, WHALLEY, WORLEY and WARLAND.? Henry WALLAN was the clear name in his handwriting in a letter written in 1851. ? Henry was born in England in approximately 1794.? He left Dorset on 1 September 1814 as a crewman aboard a 225-ton vessel, Marquis of Wellington, captain George BETHAM, which was transporting 200 male prisoners to New South Wales. ?A fellow crewman on the vessel was William (John) DAY.? They arrived in Sydney on 27 January 1815.? From then until 1819 WALLAN crewed a 40 ton Schooner Henrietta Packet and a 120 ton Brig Sophia. ? At the end of 1819 WALLAN and DAY were in partnership at Three Wells River on KI and cohabited with two or three aboriginal women possibly brought from Van Diemen¡¯s Land (now Tasmania).? WALLAN was on KI at least 17 years before the first official European settlers arrived in South Australia on 27 July 1836.? He lived on KI until his death in 1856 and is buried there with a neat grave and headstone ? What I am trying to find out is any details of WALLAN¡¯s life before he left Dorset in 1814.? Was he born or baptised in Dorset?? If so whereabouts and who were his parents or siblings?? I realise all this is before official BMD records and the fact that I have so little knowledge doesn¡¯t make it any easier for you and the fact that I¡¯m on the other side of the world doesn¡¯t make it any easier for me! ? Any help or suggestions will be greatly appreciated ? Regards Chris ? -----Original Message-----
