Hello all, Now that students are settled into courses and routines, we have a solid MSU ARC schedule established. Nets are open to the community -- we really appreciate it when Hams in the area join in! Simplex Net on Monday Nights at 8:30 PM: 145.000 MHz primary frequency, 145.125 MHz back up frequency. The W7YB station has antennas on the roof of Cobleigh Hall, so we can usually cover most of Bozeman pretty easily. Repeater Net on Thursday Nights at 8 PM: KI7XF Repeater. Special events the afternoon/evening of the first Saturday of each month, starting October 7. This is something new we are trying -- we'd like to do some different things to keep people learning. Any suggestions for activities (antenna building, turning the Noodle sculpture into an antenna, foxhunting, etc.) or experienced Hams looking to give back by helping us learn something new would be welcome! Inaugural Intercollegiate Chess Tournament: A chess tournament is being organized under the auspices of ARRL's Collegiate Amateur Radio Program. For these next three weeks, we will be playing one game a week (times made public when we know them!). For us, this will start with a match against Case Western Reserve University ARC on Sunday at 3:15 PM MDT, played over EchoLink (Node # 198430) due to planned station downtime at Case. Good job, except a when a tree is used as a support tying the line off isn’t a good idea, due to the fact the tree will move in a good breeze. I have seen installations which included a door spring. I was surprised Ace has springs that look like they would work. At a minimum loosen the line as much as you dare to allow for tree movement. The other popular solution is to put weight on the end of the line. Anything to allow the living antenna support to move while keeping the antenna in the air.
