If people are running 75 watts or so on FT8...Is it even worth the bother for me to run my 5 watt FT8?

I thought I heard a rumor that there was work being done for a future release of RCForb that addresses this issue, but I don't know if that's really in the works or may just be a dream I had...

If this subject is of interest to you, let me know if anythingI have in here is hard to follow or is unclear, or if you have ideas that weought to try for this.

The only thing I haven’t done is find someone near the remote that could ‘look’ at my signal from their home station to see if my signal is infact clean, or if I’ve let the lack of “ALC” fool me.

Re: Many Thanks

Thanks

I've been meaning to write up all my settings so that I could keep track of them.? Even after? reading everything I could get my hands on I wasn't able to make things work until Brian - KA9ONW spent time with me on the phone to walk through all the settings he uses.?

I realize I'd better document them all in case I need to go through and reset them.? I'll put all that together and anyone interested look it over (and hopefully mention some things I might still need to tweak).

I run everything on Windows 10.? I'm not sure how well the things I do from that system to translate to those operating from a different system.

The main things that seems to help with avoiding ALC while transmitting are:

  • Injecting white noise into the same virtual cable as I use for the WSJTX output.? I first read about this in "WSJT-X Operation" by W2HUV.
    • ????
    • ???? I use the free Microsoft White Noise app to generate it.
  • Resetting the PWR on WSJTX everytime I login and everytime I change bands
  • Keeping an eye on both the power output and ALC on RCFORB as I use it and tweaking the PWR on WSJTX when I notice things drift a little.? I've found that even maintaining the same power setting in WSJTX
  • I've found the WSJTX PWR slider to have a hair trigger, very small changes can end up making big changes at the remote.

Anyway, I'm going to document everything I'm doing and send it to the list.? Hopefully other folks can add to stuff they find to work well.

Hey Greg - thanks for the nice report.? Good to know that the work is paying off :)

Also - saw you on 15 meters earlier in the day running FT8 once again with perfect metrics and a squeaky clean signal.? Now this is interesting as I spent and continue to spend a lot of time (behind the scenes) making sure that the levels on the remote are properly set - and - they are or at least were unless someone else has changed them - yet we have some ops using FT8 who seemingly have lots of trouble getting their software properly set up to have the quality of signal that the remote is capable of.? I'm sort of guessing that you are not using some "ancillary" software (un-named) which seems to be the downfall for most of our ops using FT8 with severe overloads when transmitting.

All that said - would you be willing to post to the group just what you are using and how you have it set for FT8?? It might be very useful to others who are struggling to get it "right."

Thanks again and congrats on your successes.? '73 es gud dxing -- Don N4HH

Perfect Metrics on 30 FT8 earlier this evening

Only had a minute to check the remote and don’t remember who was operating - but - who ever it was was on 30 meters operating FT8 and everything looked and sounded great - no ALC indicated with 70 or 80 watts out - think it might have been Greg operating - but - whoever it was had the settings just right - congrats ?
On top of Dan’s most excellent CW?run, I’d have to say it was a good day at the remote ?
