Now there was an article worth sharing. So down-home; no fuss, no muss....

I tried an experiment with spray silvering vs aluminizing. The two methods seem to produce equivalent results, but you have to clean the mirror more carefully with the silvering method. Writeup is here, starting on page 2. Guy Brandenburg Washington, DC |
Guy, That process looks amazing.? As I already have a monster aluminizing vacuum chamber I can do aluminum and not have to redo the mirror every 6 months here in FLA.? But I am very interested in that Angel Coating.? Can it be used over a fresh PVD aluminum coating ???? ?I never figured out overcoating and raw aluminum only last about 2 years in soggy FLA On Wed, Jun 16, 2021 at 11:31 AM Guy Brandenburg via <gfbrandenburg=[email protected]> wrote:

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýI have no idea if the Angel Guard overcoat can be applied on a fresh Al coating. Sounds like an experiment that needs trying out!?The application of their overcoat is much like applying a coat of linseed oil on a piece of wooden furniture -wipe on, wait, rinse off. Except that you start with a thoroughly wetted mirror. I don¡¯t understand how it works or what it¡¯s made of, but I can verify that as far as I can tell, it does not degrade optical quality. (Tho an optical researcher I know at GSFC told me that they tried this and used an Interferometer to measure and compare. He said it degraded a surface from 1/10 lambda to 1/4 lambda, iirc.? I¡¯ve not tried wetting a mirror immediately upon it exiting the vacuum chamber.
