Hi, I dont use this group much, but I have had some really useful information in the past - so dont shut it down. My interest in vacuum stems from power cable manufacturing processes. I have been much

Re: Anybody home?
Ken, With the demise of the Space program ( for reasons unknown to any of us in it ) I have been really hitting the mirror business. I now have full up production capability for foam glass fusion

Re: Anybody home?
Please don't shut it down. I learned something on it recently that made aluminizing mirrors with our old surplus vacuum chamber much, much easier. Guy Brandenburg, Washington, DC

Re: Anybody home?
I haven't done any vacuum stuff yet because i'm too busy. I like to have this group to use later on though. I'll try and store away any unwanted vacuum gear but i'm probably a long way away.

Re: Simplest coating system possible?
It might be worth a call to the University of Hawaii¡¯s thin film lab - http://www.hnei.hawaii.edu/thinfilms.asp. If nothing else a chance to tour and look at the equipment will give you a better

Re: Simplest coating system possible?
Right now I think that my calculations put me someplace between $20,000 and $50,000. I don¡¯t think many people are going to be prepared to share a meaningful percentage of that investment.

Re: Simplest coating system possible?
Chris, Maybe we just need to build a coating system to be shared by all of us on the big island? I saw the posts quote from $8000 up to tens of thousands for the needed equipment. Maybe if we look

Well, my scope is a truss style Newtonian, all open. Your approach would mean building a whole new airtight N2 sealed telescope... or at least optically sealing the primary mirror. Due to cost and

Just a thought. I have not heard this discussed before here or maybe I just missed it. I know that you guys want just the purest optics possible so this idea may make you gag but I work at Cape

Thomas, I was worried you got flooded out or something. How goes down under ??? Mike, I do have a 1.5 meter vacuum chamber. I started with a NCR chamber so don't have a build plan to offer. The door

Re: Simplest coating system possible?
I have been doing the numbers and trying to decide if I want to build a 1.3 meter coating chamber here on the Big Island. Doing the financial math, a 1.3M chamber appears to only be about 40% more
