No. All he's saying is that you need to run a line from 5V to the '+' on the encoder. You can take the 5V from any of pins 7, 8, 9, 10 on J1.

Sorry, that was over my head. I am working to understand microprocessors in general, and Arduino in Particular, as fast as I can. I have amassed a significant amount of knowledge over the past few weeks, but have a ways to go.

Are you suggesting that I make some software or hardware modification to the supply voltage of the encoder? I do not see a Vcc line.

WA4GLI,

You might also try enabling the Vcc line to your encoder. According to the library internal pull-ups are inlace but I had a similar problem and that cured my issue.
