sail area

can someone confirm what the 100% jib sail area? I saw one listing stating the sail area was 222 sq ft. given that the total sail plan with 100% jib is 350 - 375 (seems to vary based upon source) - that would make the mains'l only 130-150 sq ft - the main seems much bigger than that...

foot blocks

Have any of you all replaced the genoa sheet foot blocks? my stbd block sheave went flying across the cockpit during a race...

let me tell you, I removed the block from the deck - not sure what someone was thinking when they installed it...one set of bolts/nuts were right above the aft most bulkhead so it was a real PITA to remove - had to actually cut away some fiberglass tabbing in order to reach the nuts...dumb...

Re: Fixed topping lift for the boom

Thanks to all for the replies to my question. For the rest of this sailing season, I'm planning on fashioning an "extender" for the topping lift where it attaches to the boom end. The extender will be deployed once the mainsail is hoisted. Hopefully, it will keep the sail from chafing, and allow the boom the correct range of motion. Next year: rigid boom vang.

Dave, some people will use a rigid boom vang like a boomkicker or a strut type... Garhauer makes a good quality strut type for fairly low cost. I use a boomkicker which works great. You shoud sail sans the topping lift as it chafes the leech of the mainsl and prevents you from getting proper leech tension.

Do any (of the three) of you have a fixed boom topping lift? If so, do you remove the topping lift from the boom end while sailing? My fixed topping lift really interferes with the upper part of the roach of my mainsail, and it seems to restrict vertical boom movement. I would appreciate hearing about how you handle this "problem" (or is it a problem?) By the way, I have the cruising version of the 27, with mid-boom sheeting.

Thanks.

Re: Fixed topping lift for the boom

I have an S2 27 with the coach top traveler and mid boom sheet angle.? I have a short line, about 12 inches long, secured to the aft end of the boom.? After raising the main sail, I move the topping lift from the boom to a loof on the end of this short extenion line.? This provides enough additional slack in the topping lift to allow free movement of the main sail roach.

Re: Maximum of 85 owners, so...

Possibly crossposting on related boat websites. I did let Scott @ tiara know that I set up the site. Maybe I'll send him the link.

Re: Loos gauge values? Update

Thanks! Good to know...I had no idea that the scales were different...

Some people suggest sailing in about 12 knots of wind and 15-20 degrees of heel

In those conditions the leeward upper should just be slack or have no slack at all.

The lowers will sway about 1/2 inch at most.

If you search web you'll see different rules of thumb but I do understand that tuning a rig with swept back spreaders is different than straight spreader.

Dynamic tuning is key as you want to ensure that the mast is not pumping, the masthead is not kinkednto leeward or the middle of spar is not bending...

Hi Rick,

Is this Clymer manual for the Yanmar 1GM10? If so, I am definitely interested.

Re: PHRF ratings in your area and downwind sailing

The S2 manual for the 27 lists a PHRF of 174 at 350 sf of sail.
I've never done any racing, so I can't comment further than that.
As for downwind & reaching, I just replaced the dead speed log yesterday...

PHRF ratings in your area and downwind sailing

What kind of PHRF ratings are you getting for JAM racing? In the long island sound area i'm assigned a 206 with the 151 #1 head sail.

also, any thoughts on getting this boat moving in light air downwind (sans spinnaker?). in 5 knots or less of true wind - the boat is very slow on a broad reach - maybe getting low 3's thru the water.

Rick
