Proposal to the Members of the R90sWorldnet
37
All R90sWorldnet members: As the owner of the R90sWorldnet (I started it maybe 20-25 years ago, truly amazing and gratifying you guys have hung in there for so long), I was contacted recently by the host of our group, io, who told me it would cost $20 per month to continue to support our group IF we wanted io to continue to store all our emails, pictures, etc., as our volume has risen beyond the free threshold, and from now on more data than this threshold will mean data will be automatically deleted. I posted to the R90sWorldnet asking for feedback about this from the R90sWorldnet members but only received one response, from James Marciano. We spoke yesterday and he offered to pay the $240/year for one year to keep things going as they are, thank you James, that is very gracious of you! I don't feel it is right for James to do that and I am unwilling to pay myself, for several reasons: No one else sent me any thoughts about this which infers there is little/no interest in saving member data, or you don't know what to suggest to do about it. and There is a better alternative which is as follows: The Vintage BMW Motorcycle Owners, see https://vintagebmw.org (Upfront: I have worked with and for this group for many years and am currently the president, the Grand Pu-bah ?.) Ha... If you go to the VBMWMO site above, and cruise around you will find an immense amount of information; we host Bob (Snowbum) Fleischer's site for instance, as well as John's Beemer Garage and more), there is a buy/sell area (members only, to keep spammers out), all the club magazines are digitized, readable and searchable for all 50 years, you can see tons of information such as the owner's manuals (some in both English & German), repair manuals, electrical diagrams, engine oil routing, videos, model information such as VIN range and... The Forums, where model ranges are presented so members can ask questions from the experts. *Including* the area called "The Incomparable R90S" which I added as the R90S model is pivotal and crucial in BMW's history. And like you, I really love the R90S. Why am I telling you this? Because I feel this is a better alternative since the VBMWMO has unlimited storage capability available, so *it will store everything*, from all emails, to all pictures, just everything us R90S members will post. AND it is all searchable! We think we can move all the data from the R90sWorldnet to the VBMWMO site under Forums, the Incomparable R90S :-) so that is good. You can join the VBMWMO as a paying member (preferred, we do have mounting costs) and you will receive our quarterly magazine (digital if you prefer). Or You can join for free, in which case you won't receive the magazine or have access to the Buy/Sell area (again, to keep out spammers, they won't pay to join.) If we do this the R90sWorldnet will go away because we will then have a better alternative and there is no sense in having duplicate venues. Please send me your thoughts, ideas, suggestions, anything at all. Thanks, and Thanks again to James Marciano for taking the initiative to look into this and contact me about it. I'm looking forward to hearing from you, Best, Mac Kirkpatrick Glenmoore, PA "After all, what is adventure, but inconvenience, properly regarded?" C. Donahue

R90S First Rally Picture at Mac's House, Jan 2001/[R90SWORLDNET] Proposal to the Members of the R90sWorldnet
See below from Paul Bates, also an R90sWorldent member. He was at the first R90S (and last), tongue in cheek I called it that, in the 2000 article I wrote about that event for the BMW MOA News, which was at my house. A very large S was formed in my backyard of attendees with their R90Ss, that picture appeared on the cover of the Jan 2001 BMW MOA News. See attached picture of the "S" we made on the front cover of the BMW Moa magazine. Fun, fun fun! *Thanks to everyone who has responded*, and so positively, as100% of the responses are for moving the R90sWorldnet to the Vintage BMW Motorcycle Owners website, see "Forums" then "the Incomparable R90S". Thanks again, Mac Kirkpatrick Glenmoore, PA "After all, what is adventure, but inconvenience, properly regarded?" C. I think going with the airheads is the best route to ensure continuity and that the archives are searchable is only a benefit. I used to belong year ago, but I will rejoin and look forward to the new arrangement. Thank you so much for all you have done for the R90s group from The First and Last R90s rally till today. Proposal to the Members of the R90sWorldnet/Transferring Data to the VBMWMO
Frank, I remember well meeting you so long ago, glad I did too!! Below is the response James Wonder recently sent to the R90sWorldnet, I hope this addresses your question. James handles all technical aspects for the Vintage BMW Motorcycle Owners, and designed and set up our website for instance. He also successfully saved and transferred all the data from the wonderful website that Darryl Richman previously set up, which was superb, thanks Darryl. We would not be here today except for all the work Darryl accomplished for us vintage owners! ** Subject: Re: [R90SWORLDNET] Proposal to the Members of the R90sWorldnet Hans, et. Al. First I will introduce myself, I am James Wonder and I am the ¡°tech nerd¡± for the VBMWMO and I will answer as many questions as possible on technology here inline and do my best to answer any new ones anyone may have along the way as we migrate. I have also copied Kurt Schrader on this email, as Kurt is our most wonderful forum owner/manager! Second, for some background, we use the phpBB software <https://www.phpbb.com/> for the forums and it is very robust with a great user community. Because of this it is quite easy to add features to the system, hence we are able to respond to wishes you may have now and in the future. Over the past several years we have added features to the forum based on member feedback and I do have a small list that I am continuing to work on (which includes a ¡°like¡± button on topics which we do not have yet, but coming soon). Third, to answer your question, there is a fairly robust email function that you can customize to your liking. Please see the links below: 1) Go to: https://vintagebmw.org/forum/ucp.php?i=ucp_notifications&mode=notification_options and you can customize WHAT emails you would like to get. I have them all set on! This page will allow you to customize your options for getting more or less email, hence getting more or less work done¡. ;-). The explanations are below: 2) You can subscribe to the whole forum by clicking the ¡°Subscribe Forum¡± link at the very bottom of the page (in the blue area) or by clicking here if you are already have an account: https://vintagebmw.org/forum/viewforum.php?f=17&watch=forum&start=0. When you subscribe to a forum, and have everything checked in the notification options you will get an email when person creates a new topic or replies to one. 3) If you do NOT want to get a notification for everything in the R 90 S forum, you can subscribe or bookmark a specific topic by clicking on the down arrow next to the wrench icon. You can also email the topic to yourself or print it from there. What we do NOT have right now that you may want is the ability to send the text of the whole new topic or post to you at the time of the post like groups.io <http://groups.io/> does. Nor do we have the ability to create a ¡°digest" a forum/topic update for nightly sending. I will be looking into both of those as we go forward. I hope this helps, and I am here (and on the forum) to help in whatever you may need going forward. If there is anything you need/want please let me know. Recommendations for Touring
7
Hi Group I realize this is a little off base to pure R90S discussion, but cannot think of a better group to pose this question to. My wife and I are looking to do some longer trips than we usually take with the R90S, and I am trying to decide which BMW models would be best for these rides. We like back roads along and live on the West Coast with mountains and coasts. I would love to hear the group thoughts regarding the best models that would be comfortable for 2-up riding over longer trips and varied landscapes. Thanks in advance, Denny

Strengthening to Handle Your Motorcycle/Selling my R90S Silver Smoke
4
Weight of motorcycle as one ages: The most important issue as regards being able to handle the weight of our motorcycles as we age is to strengthen ourselves. We lose strength, it¡¯s use it or lose it & one must take action to prevent loss of strength unlike when we were younger. There are many sources on YouTube which will tell you what to do for your specific circumstances. I¡¯ve had to really dig to find ways to strengthen my back as I have a bad back due to a compression, likely from a motorcycle accident. Look up ¡°Raul Martinez-An Introduction to Fitness¡± on YouTube. He tells how to do ¡°modified Super Mans¡± for instance to strengthen one¡¯s back w/o bending over & picking up weights, which I am incapable of doing. And do squats, planks, push ups from your knees, etc. Or ¡°Bob & Brad¡±, physical therapists, who walk you thru what actions to take as we age. All w/o leaving your house, all using only your body weight. Then besides strengthening, find an exercise you like for aerobic benefit and to burn calories for weight control. Oddly, I think, for some reason I like riding a bicycle and take a Brompton folding bike in my car everywhere. It¡¯s very compact and light, I take it into restaurants, on planes & trains, etc.; do some research on Brompton, it¡¯s amazing. Full size bikes are a real hassle to carry anywhere, on the back of a car, etc. I also like rowing, so have a boat + rowing machine. But I prefer my Brompton compact folding bicycle for sure. I¡¯m right now on a cross country (US) trip & have my Brompton in my Land Cruiser which is towing my Airstream Basecamp (think off-road), so AZ, WY, OR, etc. I ride most every day & do squats, modified Super Man¡¯s, cheater push ups (from my knees), stretching for my back, and a few more. It does not take long. My motorcycles are waiting for me: I miss you guys¡ My wife loves to walk, but that¡¯s not for me. So figure out what works for you. I also have found not eating after 8 PM and not eating again until lunch works well to keep weight off. No white anything as well. Research it, see Dr Jung for his fasting technique. Bottom line: one must be proactive as we get older or we limit ourselves. Yes it takes action, but the benefits are huge. ¡°Close your mouth and get off your butt¡±, sums it up. It¡¯s been proven men can keep their strength into their 80s, but one must be proactive about it. Figure out what works for you. Then go for a ride ? Best, Mac Kirkpatrick On Tue, Jul 25, 2023 at 22:06 <snair4337@...> wrote: Thank you, group. I'd love to keep riding mine well into my twilight years, but I just cannot manage the weight like I used to. I'm hoping to take about 50 pounds off it's weight and not alter it's look and feel too much. I'd be happy to pass it on to someone who would keep it going and enjoy it more than I can but if that doesn't happen, then it will have to be lighter. -- Mac Kirkpatrick Glenmoore, PA "After all, what is adventure, but inconvenience, properly regarded?" Selling my R90S Silver Smoke
9
I had advertised my 1976 R90S for sale in the local (Manitoba) sites and Facebook Marketplace with no bites. I had tried Bring a Trailer but they did not wish to do it with a reserve, so I declined. At this point I'm thinking about keeping and customizing mostly by reducing it's weight and modernizing it. I know some of you might find that unthinkable but I don't think I have much of a choice other than selling it for about $5,000 and buying an F800ST or F800R. Some of the mods I'm thinking about are lightened flywheel, replacing the charging system and battery. I would appreciate any suggestions from the group. Thanks.

R90s petcocks
3
Hi All, Anyone ever swap the original Karcoma style petcocks (straight down style with plastic nipple) to the more modern 45 degree angle all metal (BMW Karcoma) types? MAX parts states it will work, but they¡¯re definitely different height tubes (originals are shorter height tall tube) and also use different copper screens, The newer ones are of course the full tube screen with built in crush washer, the older ones seem to have two tiny thimble like screens that sit loosely on each white gas intake tube. Carb Question
7
Hey Guys. I was in the process of starting up my bike this morning when I noticed gas pouring out of what I'm guessing is a vent hole in my right carb. Back in April I had the carbs rebuilt, however I've since then had the bike running several times, so I don't know if the rebuild is tied to this or if it's just coincidence. I've included a pic with the vent hole circled in red. If anyone has ideas or suggestions as to what is going on here, I would greatly appreciate your input. Thanks to all.... Tom Gelz

What is the correct order of assembly from the steering head out on the turn indicator stalk??
