Ted,
When mechanical guages start acting up, making noises, jerky needle, stuff like that - disconnect the cable right now, not when you get home or even the next town. Find a wide spot in the road or a driveway and disconnect that cable!?
It's best getting both gauges serviced since when one needs attention, the other isn't far behind.?
Inactivity is bad for lube - it dries up and leaves just the carrier whatever that is - soap? No lubrication there!
There are several places to send them in the US - N Hollywood, Overseas, Palo Alto (expensive), and Wirespokes.?

Last weekend I took my 1975 R90/S on a short 400-mile R.T. trip to Maine. After the trip, my bike only has 8,100 miles on it. ?On my return trip, the speedometer started to make lots of funny noises. The odometer appears to
be working properly buy speedometer readings became wildly inaccurate. While I¡¯m having the speedo overhauled, I think it will be best to service the tachometer too. Can anyone recommend a good speedometer overhaul shop?
