I don't have the love some of you have for the DO offering.
Call me conservative, or whatever you choose, but the SS is the definitive paint scheme.
I've seen multiple colors, but the SS tops them all IMHO.

James, I agree with you.
The egg yoke arguably defines the 70s better, but Silver Smoke has always looked more classy to my eyes.
Orange has come to represent the 70s and is way more popular now than in period.?
There's probably more egg yoke R90Ss in existence now, than were ever originally built . . . .

John Gallagher alleged Mac is such a diplomat....
No I'm not :-)
The TT Silver Smoke is elegant, suitable for a night at the opera. The Daytona Orange is stunning, suitable for a day at the races.
Not that I go to the opera at all :-)
I love and have them both (bookends) but I restored a Daytona Orange one and love riding it.
It has all the "Mac upgrades"; stainless fittings, spokes, exhaust system, axles, + much more stainless, cush-drive driveshaft ('81? on), trans "shift kit", chrome acorn nut on the R/R lower shock mount :-) holes in the lower fairing (for more fun), Ohlins shocks, R75 rear drive and matching speedo, post 9/75 calipers (40 mm), smaller diameter brake master cylinder (both work well for better braking), stainless brake lines.

"Beauty's always in the eye of the beholder" of course, but I tend to agree with James & Nick here.? While there's no denying that DO / egg yolk (it reminded me of a Creamsicle ice cream bar) is an eye-catcher, when recently having my '75 R90S repainted I chose Silver Smoke. Perhaps I felt it better matched my personality.?
?The choice was a forced result of a crash.... my first such incident in the last 4 decades of riding. I was still wearing dark glasses well after sunset, and, distracted by the glare of street & commercial lighting, didn't see the rubber barrel-barricade that I clipped- throwing bike & me to the ground.? It was more embarrassing than anything else, but it broke the cockpit/fairing & left some of the other painted parts scarred.. ??
I'd bought the bike from an online seller, based only on photos and discussions with the owner,? a couple decades-plus? earlier, to join the R90/6 I already had. ? The S? had a custom paint job- a two-tone metallic gold/bronze- nice enough color wise but a previous owner had painted a graphic of an S rider in a tight lean on the tank, which I really hated. ? I'd long considered having the bike restored to stock colors; and the accident gave me that opportunity.?
Anyways, the re-painter uncovered so many coats of different colors while stripping down that we never really figured out what its original color had been. Some mods to the bike, such as a braced swing arm and lightened fly wheel suggested that the bike might have been used at some point at a track.
The DO bikes do seem more popular now and are definitely more common where I live, so I suspect you're right, Nick, about the likelihood that there are now more such bikes than originally sold. ? In any case, I'm? delighted with the results of the re-paint, which was done by a very talented fellow in my area who had come highly recommended by other happy R90S owners.
I'd post a photo but I don't have the bike fully reassembled.? (Unfortunately, I'd sold the R90/6 not long before my crash; so, bike-less for a bit, I bought an '05 BMW R1200ST for a daily rider in the interim.)

I wasn't going to enter the debate. Nevertheless here goes, when adding a 90S to my collection, I wanted a Silver Smoke. Back in 1973 or 1974, one passed me me while I was threading my irridescent purple Bonnie along a road I knew well. That first 90S I laid eyes on burned an imprint on my brain. Compared to my larish purple peepleater, the 90S was an aristocrat. ?I've a nice collection of 70s bikes now, bright Orange Laverdas and splendid? Silver Ducatis and others.? Howeverr, the bike that draws the eyes when mates come by is the aristocrat. It is still that classy.

I, for one would love to know why James Wiseman brought up a subject that in the last 44 years have been flogged to death. Every so often this colour combination issue raises its head. ? As Mac stated The TT Silver Smoke is elegant, suitable for a night at the opera. The Daytona Orange is stunning, suitable for a day at the races. ? OK an alternative is ? The Silver Smoke is the traditional BMW at its conservative best. The Daytona Orange is the vibrant alternative. ? And which every way one discuss, debates or even argues it, nothing is going to change. It is now history and thus set in concrete. ? Instead of arguing the colour why not just do what the bike was intended ---------------get out and ride it. ? Now if you kindly excuse me and Mac will understand this, the S is now fuelled up and ready to take me through the Mt Dandenong Mountain Range twisties, the perfect place to legally misbehave by playing with the gearbox and help clean out the exhausts pipes. ? We are ALL entitled to our opinions and preferences and we all can freely state our preferences, whether it is James, Mac, Frank, Chris, Peter, Rob, Roger, everyone.
BTW I sent HansA Muth that initial email and he responded to?me as well. He is a consummate?gentleman's?gentleman.
I saw no arguments, only opinions offered and they are all welcome.
And yes, I am going for a ride as well :-) ?That bike just tugs at me, calling me from the garage. It is 38 F here now, will wait a bit.
Thanks to everyone for your contributions, that is what makes this list SO great.
