You and I gotta talk sometime about the AMA and what it does for all
motorcyclists.
And how important it is to all motorcyclists.
And how much you benefit as an AMA member, even if you are not an AMA
member!!

You going to the Philadelphi Motorcycle Show? I am planning on working the
AMA booth there and would like to see you there so we can talk.

Locked Re: AMA NOT for me.

Kirk,
thanks for the ama info, BUT the AMA is too big to be interested in one Pa.
riders querry on Progressive Insurance doubling my rates (for no aparent
reason, and with no verbal or written response) from AMA or Progerssive, who
just happens to be ins co of choice for the AMA.
So who's interests do they really have in mind when a little guy goes up
against a major "corporate" sponser like Progerssive. You tell me.
They dont deserve my support if 3-4 inquiries go unanswered..like mine did.
Forget iT ! I get that frequency of response from my kids AND I dont have to
pay for it(Well, indirectly I do !).
The BMW Moa said "thank you " via e-mail when I joined them , I complimented
them on the mag... Sandy said " thank you", and I dont have to wade through
tons of HD stuff and pages of supuffulous advertising in the AMA mag, make
that rag, which is very boring.

So, support the MOA RA and Airheads , not to mention the R90S and Vintage
Club ,take your pick these orgs. have similar interests as we do.The AMA is
after big money sponsership ,and as far as their clout on Capitol Hill , do
we really need it?
IMO,your membership benefits them more than it benefits you.

Locked The "First and Last" R90S Rally 30 Sept 2000

List, Thought you would enjoy the aryicle / recap that I wrote (with editing
/corrections)from Mac(Thank You) for the Lehigh Vally BMW MOA Group News
Letter.

The "First and Last" R90S Rally 30 Sept 2000

Well, the last writing documented the "Rising" of my 1975 R90S ,"Before
Dawn", (We got her finished... "Before Dawn")at Gary Williams Airhead Tech
Session this summer. This all day techsession was in anticipation of doing
some long awaited maintainence (splinelube at the input shaftt and rear hub ,
rear flange bolt upgrade, swing armadjust, fluids etc, etc)on the Ess in
preparation for The "First and Last"R90S Rally to be hosted by Mac and
Melanie Kirpatrick (DrBeemer@...) at their home/BMW Museum in Glenmoore,
Pa. (Mac has also started an R90s only discussion list, email him if you wish
to join.)

As most of you are aware, the R90S was manufactured from late 1973 to 1976
(as 1974,1975, and 1976 models) and marked a "coming out" of sorts for BMW
as well as signifying a new era in the motorcycling industry with this new
"style" motorcycle coming from Bavaria .
The "coming out" for BMW was notable in the fact that this new "superbike"
was a radical departure from the staid and conservative design of the marque
since the first BMW motorcycle, the R32 rolled off the production line back
in 1923 . The "S" came with a two tone fogged paint job, first offered in TT
Silver Smoke and then later in Daytona Orange, which was a radical departure
for BMW from it's basic, (yet georgous) black production bikes with white
stripes, going back to that first R32. In
addition to the radical paint scheme, The R90S boasted, among other
"firsts", the first disc brakes for BMW, first 900 cc engine, De'Lorto
pumper carburetors, and
a sport fairing that said "ride me and ride me fast" !!!.
Well this 67 HP
beauty had a top speed of 125 MPH in 1974, which was fast enough to win
Daytona and the Superbike Championship for 1976, yet was comfortable
enough to tour the country on! The motorcycle industry had to stand up and
take notice of '"THIS" 180 degree opposed cylinder "sports tourer". From HD
to Honda , they all had a new target to focus their respective Marketing and
Engineering teams on.
The design of this classic 1970's era motorcycle has led it to be the most
sought
after, collectable and rideable model that BMW has ever produced.

Anyway, back to the Rally story. Mac Kirpatrick happens to own a few R90Ss
and R100RSs, some reportedly still have german air in the tires, and
possibly the
closest to showroom examples in the country, so Mac,with the suggestions of a
few
friends, decided to host the The "First and Last" R90S Rally at his home in
Glenmoore, with an advance notice of a photo shoot of all the Ess's that
could ride, trailer or otherwise make it to Glenmoore for the Rally.
Well, to any Beemerphile, this is a invitation not to be missed! Mac's home
overlooks Marsh Creek State Park , and with that setting ,over 30 R90S' ,
from as far away as Michigan, Kentucky and Ohio, assembled to participate in
this photo
shoot. This sight, (30 Daytona Orange and Silver Smoke R90Ss) was the
ultimate BMW eye candy for the day, not to mention the other airheads,
Oilheads, K's and a few Vintage /2's out to enjoy a great day and drool on
and over the
bikes, truely something for everyone to see and admire .
The Shoot- The backround was Macs' backyard lawn where we laid an extension
cord down on the ground in the shape of an "S" and then proceeded to line
all the bikes up on the "S". The photographers' perch was set up
high, overlooking the "S", on approx. 20 feet of scaffolding mounted on the
deck that was already 20 feet above the backyard. The resultant photo of
riders and mounts is now on my wall at home showing all the boys with their
toys AND smiles that we are all familiar with when we're on two wheels. Many
thanks to Mac and Melanie who hosted the day and enjoy the sport with great
enthusiam. Mac has a great collection and has invited us for a tour of
The Glenmoore- Kirkpatrick's BMW Collection-Museum as a destination for an
upcomming club ride .
P.S.Think there are a few remaining R90S Tees (Your pic ..Grey or Orange)of
the event left if you contact: superlario@... (DR.FELIX SUPERLARIO)

Locked Re: R90S Lightened flywheels

G'day Tony,
To the best of my knowledge in Australia only 1 R90s has had the flywheel
lightened. The owner wasn't happy about the effect and ended up by replacing
it. There are pros and cons in this area, however, we Aussies tend to look
at the BMW from a different angle.
In Australia we tend to modify the BMW to cope with the land. Since we cross
vast expanse of land we rather have a long range tank or racks over the
engine to carry spare fuel/water. We don't modify the internals.
My personal opinion is that I should modify my thinking/outlook/riding to
the bike rather than the other way around. I strongly believe in leaving the
bike as the manufacture intended. (Other than exhaust pipes) My advice Tony
is "don't work the engine - let the engine work for you" This policy has
seen my bike, bought new in '76 keep on keeping on. Last month it passed the
380,000klm.

Frank,
That moon landing thing was in 1968. Meaning the more technologically
advance R90s was not yet invented, only a few prototypes may have been
secretly used behind the Iron Curtain by CIA operatives. However, unlike
most information needed to build a nuke, details have not yet been
de-classified by the US Gov't. But when NASA finished the Apollo project,
rumour has it that they went to work on syncronizing KZ1300 carbs in an
underground research center in the Nevada desert.

Just to clarify: I am looking for a pair of new or rebuilt carbs
because
the screws in mine are completely frozen, and I think that by the time I
have them drilled out, retapped, and then rebuild everything, I would be
better off just replacing them. The suggested UK website with new ones
looks good, although a bit expensive. Anyway, I appreciate all the
suggestions.

Lutz: You had inquired about buying the R90s Tamiya model from me.

Well, the word is getting out that this model is now available again in
Japan. It had been sold out and was no longer available. I guess Tamiya
started producing it again, and I could not keep this info from my fellow
R90s enthusiasts!!

The R90s is by Tamiya, it is 1/6 scale and it will require you to assemble
and paint it. The color on the box cover is TT Silver Smoke. It is
beautiful. (I do not have an assembled one , but I have a friend working on
one for both of us.)

BTW the assembly instructions with the model are in Japanese.

Go to www.hlj.com and search for Item Code "TAM 16008" (BTW the R75 model
is item code TAM 16005). The R90s is 7000 yen or about $63.00 US plus
shipping. It is hard to find at this site, but if you use the item code that
will help you find it.

Good luck!!!

More on "lightened flywhhels". Darwin Motors listed them on thier website www.darwinmotors.com under "go fast goodies" for $190, problem is then you gotta start saving for the turbo at $750. Plus the 2 weekends tear-down and re-assembly that await you to consider... (but its a good chance to go thru the gear change mechanism, inspect the clutch plates, swing arm bearings, etc.) Also, recalling the muffler cost question from a few days ago... they want $325 a pair. (He is not known for low prices).

Locked re-built carbs

Hello Gary,
Another idea for your carbs... In September, I was at Darwin Motors in San Francisco. There I saw a R90s that was being parted out... I recall that it still had the Del Orto's mounted (I snatched the tool tray). Be warned, I think that this guy's prices are ridiculous, but maybe you could make him an offer? I imagine too, that he would have the re-build stuff in stock, as he specializes in old Guzzi's and /2 thru /7 BMWs. Send an e-mail to mail@... or check out thier site darwinmotors.com
good luck, Kirk

Any comments pro or con on lightening the stock flywheel?

I know that Butler & Smith lightened their flywheels while attempting to win
the Superbike Races in 1976. One of the owners of one of my R90ss knew the
people who lightened fly wheels for Butler & Smith's racing efforts and

And in an R90s I own, a prior owner says it has a lightened flywheel, and
it is much better to ride for me.
The engine revs up easier and the bike seems more powerful.
