From: Kirk Ratzel <eur90s@...>
I did a search of the eGroups listed under bmw, although I found the
headings " R bikes", "clubs" and "vintage", I could not find reference to
the R90s group. Aren't we listed, or did I just look in the wrong place?
Mac replied:
We are listed at egroups and we are not limited in any way as to being
accessed or found. I guess the egroups search only works for certain words.
If you search under "R90s" you will find us.
There is a way to make the R90s list blind to anyone trying to find us but
that is not the case with us. I set up the list to be fully accessible, the
only exception being that membership is limited. So not just anyone can be
a member. Let me explain why we limit membeship.
This membership limit feature protects us if we wish to be protected from
something or someone, like a retail entity selling something (would be like
spam for R90s owners). It would be irritatiing to receive an email offering
to "sell chain lube at a great price if you order some Dell'Orto parts
within the next two weeks."
It also protects us from a member with an unknown (to them) virus like the
case we already had.
Only when one member had a virus problem recently was he not allowed to
continue being a member of the list, but he is clean now and back on the
list and he is welcome. He was not aware of his virus problem, but you can
imagine someone unknowingly sending a virus to the entire list, that would
be a disaster!
So that is why membership is limited. Not to exclude anyone, but simply to
protect list members.

Kirk:
Also, I presume the group is only open to National R90s Sport Owners Club
members. If this isn't the case, maybe it should be. Any thoughts?
Mac replied:
This list has never meant to limit membership to anyone regardless of club
affiliation, whether they actually own an R90s or even if they never want to
own an R90s. Membership is for anyone interested in the R90s model and is
meant by that to benefit all members.
We do not have an effective means of limiting list access only to The
National R90s Sport Owners Club members. Additionally that might not work
for some non US members. Perhaps in their mind it should then be the
International R90s Sport Owners Club. This is an international list as you,
Kirk recently pointed out to me by reminding me that reflectors were only
installed on US R90ss. And right you were!!!
I can only encourage new membes to join the National R90s Sport Owners Club
and that is why I send new members the Club website link and point out the
opportunity of joining.
When a new member comes on board I send them a Welcome email telling them
who we are, what we do, and encourage them to write in to the list and tell
the other list members something about themselves (a bio.)
I also tell them about The National R90s Sport Owners Club and invite them
to join the Club at the Club website.
This Welcome email has been evolving and changing over time and has changed
a lot since I first started sending it out.
I have printed below the latest itteration of the Welcome email I now send
out to all new members. I made updates to it as recently as this morning. It
is constantly evolving whenever I get better ideas.
Remember if you did not receive this email, then you were accidentally
overlooked by me, or the Welcome email did not exist when you joined as you
were an early member.
This list now has over 50 members and was started on Oct 17, so a lot has
happened in a short time.
*Please read over the following email and send me your suggestions* for
making this Welcome email a better more informative email for new members.
Welcome email sent to all new R90SWORLDNET members:
---------------------------------------------------------------
Welcome to the *R90s* only internet discussion list. We are glad to have
you aboard.
There are now 50+ members from all over the world. It it is nice that we
are growing larger, with new members such as yourself. And we only just
started this list on Oct 17th!!
Please tell other R90s devotees about this list. We will all benefit by
having more members.
Now that you are a member, you can email all R90s members by sending an
email to
R90SWORLDNET@...
The objective of this list is to discuss the R90s, dispel myths about the
bike, learn and share, sell and buy parts and bikes, and anything else
that interests members of the list.
You may want to consider joining The National R90S Sport Club at
*Your "bio".*
We would appreciate hearing from YOU about your motorcycle interests and
why you have an interest in the R90s model. That way we can learn a little
about you. These bios have led to some very interesting discussions among
all the members.
Thanks.
And if there is anything I can do to help you in any way please let me know
at drbeemer@...
