Re: Suggestion for a new feature

Hristo,

Thanks for the tip about the Del and unhide events keys.

I just knew you were going to ask about filters! LOL

I keep my magnitude limit a little higher than what I can probably see with my scope. sometimes the star is redder than indicated and it shows up on the camera so I try to do a dry run of those events in advance to see if I can actually image it. It also gives me the opportunity to integrate, if necessary, but that also depends on the duration. I expand my radius wider than I would normally travel just in case there is a "special" event that i should consider.? The bottom line is, I might have many potential events on my list that I won't end up observing but I don't want to risk missing an event just because I had a filter value set too conservatively.?

Ok, i tried the "DEL" key and that works. and the "unhide" worked as well.? Question about "unhide", though. If I deleted an entry last month would it appear again, or is the unhide based on the retention (keep showing...) limit?? I hope the latter. But? how about a counter compromise. If an event ages (happened yesterday), you still show it on the list, with dimmed text. Why not do the same for deleted events. still show them, but as dimmed. users can tell the difference between the two because one will have an old date and the other in the future. eventually the deleted one will disappear once the retention date has passed.
I could live with that!

Re: Suggestion for a new feature

There is one thing you can do now, it is to select the event and press the 'Del' button to hide the event.

You cannot unhide a single event, but you can unhide all hidden events if you press Ctrl + Shift + Z

The other option is to update your filters. There are already filters on altitude and rank for example. What type of events you would like to hide/ignroe and why those events have made it to your list?

I'm guessing this is because you didn't want to miss and exceptional event with sub-optimal altiture. If this is your case then pessing 'Del' will probably be a good option for you. Otherwise let me know how I could improve the filers.

Also does anyone have experience with C# and is willing to contribute to the development of OccultWatcher? l'll take help every day.

Cheers,
Hristo.

Suggestion for a new feature

I would like the ability to flag events as (forget about it), such as making the little icon to the left of each event something that would tell me that there is no reason to consider this event (distance, etc).?
Perhaps a new menu item on the right-click menu that says "Ignore".
That way, we don't have to remember if we already checked out an event for consideration.
Of course we would still be able to change our mind by adding the event to our "my events" list.

This one would take a little work (GUI and data structure), but for me it would useful.

If there already a way to do this, I haven't figured it out yet.

Re: How do I do the following in OW

Edited

My post probably didn't belong on this thread, but I responded to Dave Heralds post about adding comets to Occult.
Looking at his comment, now, I am not sure to which post he is responding to, I don't see a reference to comets on this thread until then.
I did ask about comets in Occult, but it doesn't appear to be in this thread. that is odd.
I wanted to use Occult to verify an event that was referenced in another publication.?
I succeeded, but in this case, I should be careful what I ask for.?

PS, i found the original thread, it is from the IOTA group and the thread is called "Occult (comets)". The last post in that thread referenced Dave Herald as the one to ask. I switch back and forth between groups and when I saw Dave's response, I just went with the flow. Sorry about that.

Currently I am refreshing the list of occultations for comets in OW & OWC every 15 days due to the "volatile" comet's ephemeris. Some times, only in 15 days, some predictions disappear and others, its shadow, shifted thousands of kilometres.

The feed covers all the Earth (global feed) and are filtered by 13.1 star mag. Currently there isn't predictions for the comet 29P in the feed.

I have increased the star mag to 14.5 and there is 2 events until August 31st, using MPC elements of today:

I should mention a couple of things:

1) Occult, OccultWatcher and OccultWatcherCloud are different pieces of software.

2) Comet events can be computed using Occult - looks like this is what you have done here, however the title of this thread is "How do I do the following in OW" which is unrelated to what you have done.

3) Comet events are also made available on OW Cloud by Carlos Perello (cc-ed)

4) The Comet Occultations 'feed' in Occult Watcher comes from the OWC events uploaded by Carlos

So I'm not sure what was your intention and whether it worked out or not, but if I can help on the OccultWatcher and OWC side of things, I'll be happy to, once I understand what you need.

If you have issues generating comet predictions in Occult, then Dave Herald and Carlos should be able to help. Also if this is what you were after may be Occult's group.io could have been a better place, as this group is laregly for OccultWatcher and possibly OWC related discussions.

If you wanted to see comet events in OccultWatcher, then these should be already available from Carlos' feed. If you are missing an event please let us know which is it is.

Note on OWC: After the comet predictions are computed from MPC's orbits and uploaded to OWC by Carlos, OWC will update the predictions using the latest Horizon's orbit. Often the new predictions will be hundreds and soemtimes even thousands of km away from the initial one so the event may not be showing in OW for you for that reason.

Are you looking at a particular event involving 29P and which one?

Kind Regards,
Hristo.

Re: How do I do the following in OW

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

The greatest problem is the total mag of the comet is estimated to be 11.1, with the star at 15.5.
?
However the bigger problem is the orbit. Comets are affected by non-gravitational forces ¨C and they are not incorporated in the basic integration scheme used by Occult.
?
Unfortunately Occult does not yet have the capability to automatically use Horizons elements for comets. I¡¯ve just had a look at the code, and came across a particular issue with Horizons that will require some effort to deal with ¨C & I don¡¯t have the time at the moment. The solution to this:
- go to the Horizons web site, and query it for the comets orbital elements as at the date of the event. Then manually key them in to the UserAsteroid file...

The second caveat above is because in small zooms when clicking when the cursor is a hand, will display information about the closest chord to the click location. Hello Hristo and Vince,

having _only_ "cancel all stations" was also disturbing to me.
Some more possibility to select WHAT to do is useful: deleting one, moving one, changing to only mark it and deleting all (as is) would be perfect.

But one possibility while deleting is already available Vince:
At the figure below showing the locations I can hover over the stations and find my stations. With right mouse click I get a menu whre I can delete just this one! But anyway to select on the eventline right click would also be nice to have another selection possible than only "delete all stations"
But hovering and selecting could become difficult if there are locations of others on same chord, Hristo (??)

Am 18.07.2021 um 07:13 schrieb V Sempronio:

Hristo,

I wrote my reasons for the feature, but then I realized I had more possible use cases, so let me simplify.

1. I first like to pick the events that I most likely will observe just to have them in "my events". location at that time doesn't matter, so I use my home site as default. I almost always change the location later on, because of chord conflicts with other observers, the site i found on the map doesn't hold up once I do a site survey, or in a recent case, I found a site that would allow me to observe two events in the same night from the same location.
2. observers who have multiple stations will need to modify locations a lot more often for some of the reasons I mention above.?

I thought about adding another station to the new location, then deleting the old station. that doesn't work since you can only cancel ALL stations, not selective ones. THIS is even a bigger issue for those who juggle multi observing site events. Forcing them to start all over seems onerous.?

so, how about a compromise. allow observers to cancel individual stations (right click and select "Manage Stations" rather than "Cancel all Stations" , and then bring up a sub menu with the list of stations with the description "Cancel station X".? you can have a "cancel all" in that menu context. I can live with that!

So my new use case would be to add another station, set a new site to that station, then delete the old station.?

Would anyone else find this useful?

Vince

Re: How do I do the following in OW

The app is available from the Play Store. See:

Please note that currently there is no option to move your site to the location of your phone, but this is something I am suggesting that may serve your usecase if added.

If you zoom all the way on the GoogleMap the resolution of placing/moving the telescope should less than a meter.

Also OW has the concept of "Preferred Mobile Location" as something that can be saved with exact coordinates, in case you want to return and observe from there again. May this is what you can use. In this case your workflow will be as follows:

- You announce from your "common catch-all location"
- Once you know where you are going to observe, you can:

?? * Open "Show online map with stations"
?? * Click on the "Preferred Sites" in the top of the window. This will place markers to your exact coordinates of your saved preferred mobile locations
?? * Click on your telescope marker and choose "edit"
?? * Now you click on the preferred mobile location you want to observe from
?? * Choose "To announce a station at this location, click 'here'"
?? * This will move your announced site to the exact mobile location without having to cancel/re-add

Yes! I am talking about Mobile. My "home" site is just the coordinates of my driveway since I don't have a permanent obs yet. If a path falls over my home, then I'll usually observe from there unless there are special circumstances. It doesn't mean that the final location of my telescope will actually observe from that location; I might have to move the scope around the property to avoid the house and trees, but it is close enough.

I have seen/tried the "click on the icon" feature, I mentioned it in my last response. I tried the "edit" feature, but I couldn't figure out how it worked and it wasn't what I really wanted. What I would like to have as a feature is that when I click "edit" I have the option to select from my list of prepopulated sites. I did not realize that the site list was originally designed for "fixed sites", since it allows me to create as many as I want, I took advantage of that.

The pinning of an icon on a map isn't always accurate enough in MHO. We are observing smaller and smaller asteroids, the spacing between chords get more and more narrow. I try to be as accurate as I can when staking my claim (so to speak) on a given chord. That way there is less possibility of conflict with other observers.

I name my sites after the geographical locations that I determine could be good viewing sites, or current and future events. It is far easier to select a site that I trust than trying to find another new location. So my site list grows and becomes more useful over time. That brings me to another "feature" I would like to see. If I click on the telescope icon on the map, it doesn't show me the name of the site that I chose, it just shows my profile name. This should be case if others select my chord, but if I the owner clicks on it, I would like to see the name that I assigned to the site.?

I was unaware of the OWMobile app, I can give it a try. I'll reserve comments till I have a chance to try it out.

We seem to be going around and around on this. Let me try the mobile app to see if that gives additional features that could help me. Is the app available on the play store? (android)

Re: How do I do the following in OW

Thanks for being patient, Hristo.

Re: How do I do the following in OW

Hi Vince,

There is already a way to cancel a single station but it requires a few more clicks. You need to "Show online map with stations". Then you can click on the telescope presenting your location and you can choose between the following:

?- delete station (just remove the site)
?- edit station (this will allow you to 'move' your station to a new location) <--- May be this is what you are trying to do.

The Home locations within OccultWatcher are really for fixed observatories. I made it possible to have more than one, because some people can observe from more than one fixed location.

Now that I understand that your issue is about mobile locations, an easier approach would be to do all this from the OW Mobile app. Because your phone knows your location it will be easy to select your site and then tap on a button to update it with your current location. This will work if you have reception, but if you don't then updating you location from your laptop (which is what I assume you are doing now) will also not work.

Are you using OWMobile's app? Do you have an Android phone or an iPhone?

Would the above work for you?

Cheers,
Hristo.
