Re: North Dakota
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýNeill, ? I agree.? The landscape adds so much ¡°value¡± to the photo.? Every so often I see the suggestion that you should ¡°isolate¡± the subject train from its surroundings.? To me, that¡¯s advice that¡¯s good only for roster shots or factory shots. ? Phil Burton ? ? From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Neill Farmer ? I am a firm believer that trains live in a landscape, whether that be urban, industrial or, in this case, the badlands. Every now and then an image comes along that illustrates this perfectly/ Well done. |

Empire Wednesday 1982
People who have been to the California State RR Museum will probably recognize the Virginia and Truckee #13, the Empire, a 2-6-0 that is partly surrounded by mirrors.? The museum was only about a year old when I took this photo, but I could go there today and reproduce the shot as the engine is still in the same spot. Mike Tisdale |

New York
The bridge over the falls of the Genesee River at Rochester, New York was built by the New York Central and has since been owned by Penn Central, Conrail and, now, CSX.? ?Tiffany? Morley's photo shows CSX and CN units leading a westbound train in the wake of Hudsons and lightning striped diesels.? Mike Tisdale |

Salt Lake Tuesday, 1982
The view out the vestibule of Amtrak's westbound San Francisco Zephyr on 29 Dec 1982 as we cross the Great Salt Lake in Utah on SP's fill across the lake.? We are almost to the west end, with the mountains west of the lake covered with snow ahead of us. #5 was running about 12 hours late due to snow in the Midwest.? BN had held the train at a station in Nebraska rather than risk it getting stuck in a snowdrift somewhere and I'd boarded the train in Denver shortly after the eastbound Zephyr had left the night before.? We ran overnight to Ogden and then had Utah and Nevada by daylight before crossing the Sierra under moonlight.? This was roughly the schedule of SP 21, the mail train that had been discontinued in 1967 after the loss of mail contracts, and we saw country that the train usually passed in the middle of the night.? SP's? original Lucin Cutoff, a wooden trestle, is visible on the left.? I think that it was no longer in service at this time.?? Mike Tisdale |

New Mexico
Our New Mexico photo juxtaposes a Railrunner train at the Santa Fe depot with the Sangre de Christo Mountains at dusk. My wife and I spent a few days in Santa Fe in November 2017 and then stopped by the Grand Canyon on the way back home, the trip being on Amtrak, Railrunner and the Grand Canyon RR. 9 Nov 2017. Nebraska
Much of Nebraska is more or less flat and Railpictures has a lot of 3/4 views of BNSF and UP trains.? In the west of the state, trains to and from the Powder River Basin encounter some hills and Crawford Hill here still has manned helpers to help the coal get over the grade.? Craig Williams got the helpers of a BNSF coal train push the train around a horseshoe curve. Mike Tisdale |

Montana
Railpicuture's Montana photos required some thought for me to decide which one to feature for the state. This Mike Danneman photo of BNSF on Montana Rail Link at Lombard was the winner, but you might want to go to RP and take a look at some of the "judges also liked" images for the state. Mike Tisdale |

Poppy Wednesday, 2016
April 6, 2016, Berkeley, California poppies and F59PHI 2009 leading Capitol Corridor train 537. This was from the month in 2016 that I had a job in Berkeley and commuted on Amtrak. 2 Capitols and a San Joaquin were scheduled through town at lunch time and I'd often go to the track and photograph them. Missouri
Roger Puta gives us our Missouri photo, a shot of the St. Marys depot from the cab of Frisco's Sunnyland in 1963. The Sunnyland was the day train on the Kansas City-Memphis run and probably carried more mail and express than passengers from photos I've seen of the train. Marty Bernard posted the photo to Railpictures. Mike Tisdale |
