Re: Above the Arctic Circle for Sunday
Speaking of trees... While in the Arctic, the tree line is going north due to the climate getting warmer, my UK friends have been sharing then and now photos of places that are changing beyond recognition with the growth of trees. They are not attributing it to climate change, but to the Clean Air Act of around 1970, which banned a lot of the coal burning that had been happening.? People used to heat their houses with coal, industry used coal in local factories and the air usually smelled like an engine shed in residential areas. Now, people have not be burning a lot of coal for a few decades and the power plants that still burn coal have some smog reducing equipment. Britain's forests are exploding.? What? were bare hills in 1970s shots are now forests again, and I say again, because there are historic records of forests being there before the Industrial Revolution.? Blake's "dark, Satanic mills" did a number on the trees and well as the lungs of people near them. Of course, that has an effect on rail photography, with many former scenes of the track no longer visible.? I look at some of their before and after shots and the only reason I recognize the place as the same is a building near the track that is in both photos. Mike Tisdale

??? A well done story and great photos.? I just finished reading the book by youthful climate activist Greta Thunberg's mother, "Our House is on Fire," and they describe this area, the ore trains and the tree line creeping upward, as they detect climate change impacting the natural environment in that area.

What a fantastic shot, Chuck.? An article that has stayed with me is Mike Shafer's account of chasing the CP C-Liners in a 1970s trains.? CTC/RI reprinted it in color with more photos a few years ago.? ? That must have been something to see, the FMs in the mountains. Mike Tisdale

I haven't been to the Canyon in a few years but certainly always enjoyed it when I could get up there. Here are a couple of trains from 1995 and 1998 respectively when I was living just west of Reno. It was about an hour's drive to Portola via I-80 west to Truckee, then up Highway 89 to Highway 70, or to go east on I-80 and up 395 to Reno Junction, then west on 70. The UP westbound is on the Clio Viaduct, about ten miles west of Portola (AKA Pay Toilet). The BNSF westbound is at Pulga. For those of you who like leased power, the Bunsniff train was a gold mine.

Re: Yreka Western for Tuesday
One other note I was going to add, I'm pretty sure the engine block partially under the tarp in one of your photos was from YW #1171, one of a pair of former Union Pacific Alco S-4 diesels YW bought in the later 1970s.? The #1171 had mechanical issues the road knew about before they bought it but then never got around to fixing, and then they very slowly scrapped the unit over the first part of the 1980s.? The engine block was about the only thing left by 1986/1987, and it too vanished a short time later.? Jeff Moore Elko, NV |
