Montreux Thursday, 1980
Montreux, Switzerland. Re4/4 11241 arrives with an eastbound train. This might be the 1602 train that I left on. I like the way the city just surrounds to railway. There is not a lot of space between Lake Geneva and the mountains. Some of those buildings have apartments, they would be great for a railfan who wanted to watch trains from the living room. I checked Google Street View and the scene appears much the same today, with, of course, newer trains. an 31 square meter apartment in one of the buildings in the background is is 1380 Swiss francs a month, around $1500, so having trains going by your front window in Montreux is not cheap. 11 March 1980 Mike Tisdale |
Snowy Wednesday, 2012
21 Dec 2012, Truckee, California, snow service GP38-2s on flanger sets.. The frames on top of the units are icicle breakers, used to smash hanging icicles in tunnels and snowsheds. When snow is falling, UP regularly sends flangers between Truckee and Fulda, just west of Emigrant Gap, to keep the line plowed. If too much snow accumulates, spreaders are used to push the snow over the side of the right of way. Rotaries are the last resort and are called out only case of very severe weather. I'd arrived in Truckee on Amtrak's California Zephyr, having ridden up from Roseville. We'd held at Emigrant Gap to allow 572's flanger set to run ahead of us over Donner Summit to make sure the line was clear. Mike Tisdale |
Emigrant Gap Tuesday, 2007
UP 4267 west passing the WW2 troop diner at Emigrant Gap, California. The old car was there for many years and used to store maintenance of way equipment, but by 2011, it was gone. Emigrant Gap is at about 5200 feet elevation and is the west end of the heavy snow zone on Donner Pass. A short distance west of Emigrant Gap is the loop at Fulda, where snow fighting equipment is turned to go back east to Truckee when the snow is falling. By the end of March 2007, snow was gone from Emigrant Gap. Mike Tisdale |
Darjeeling Sunday, 1980
At Tung, we met an uphill mixed behind 791 that was taking water. We were on the downhill Darjeeling Mail on the left. The car with the red window stripe was a working mail car, what we'd call an RPO in the US. The engines are Class B 0-4-0Ts on the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, India 30 Jan 1980 le Mike Tisda |
South Kenton Saturday, 1980
April 25, 1980? London-Birmingham BR EMU at South Kenton. I think this is a Class 310.?? I'd ridden the London Underground here and was watching trains from the Underground platform, note the 3rd and 4th rails on the track next to the platform.? The Underground and BR's West Coast Main Line from Euston Station share rights of way for a few miles. ¡ª in London, United Kingdom. Mike Tisdale |
Palisade, Nevada
i've gotten some comments on the Palisade photo.?? Someone sent me this 1880 photo of the town The train in my photo was curving around the cliff on the right of this shot on the track the Western Pacific built in the early 20th century. Here are a couple of views of the town site today.? There is a ranch on the hillside, but of the town and railroad facilities on the flat land next to the river, only a couple of walls and foundations remain. Happy New Year, Mike |
A Morning at Palisade for Tuesday, 2018
August 24, 2018? ? 8631 was DPU on a no grainer. The colors of the canyon remind me of Maxfeld Parrish. Some railfan friends and i camped at Palisade in 2018 and 2019. This eastbound empty grain train came by early one morning. Palisade is in Eureka County, which has fewer that 2000 people living in over 4000 square miles.? Several counties in northeastern Nevada add up to around 45,000 square miles, roughly the size of England and are home to about 90,000 people, many of whom live in Elko and the immediate area. ¡ª in Palisade, Nevada. A Tenderful of Coal for Tuesday, 1980
WP 4-6-2 7452. of the Western Railway (others at Bhusaval are Central Railway). Coaling by hand. At Bhusaval, the passenger engines were fueled by hand, while cranes were used on the freight engines. Bhusaval was our first shed bash on our 1980 trip to India. 23 January 1980 Mike Tisdale |
Re: BNSF at James for Monday, 2019
BNSF 7513 is a GE ES44DC and BNSF 4011 is a GE C44-9W.? The C44s get 4400 HP from a 16 cylinder FDL engine, while the newer ES44s (GEVOs) have GE's newer Evolution Series engine and get the same HP from 12 cylinders. Chris Bates commented on this being rattlesnake and mountain lion country.?? Yes, it is.?? I think I saw a mountain lion from inside the car once, going into the bushes and we do see rattlesnakes from time to time.? Leave a rattlesnake alone and it won't bother you, it is when people blunder onto them that they strike in self defense.? Here is one we saw in Sacramento, near the American River a few years ago while watching trains.?? We saw it crossing the bike trail from up on the levee Two of us went down to get closer photos while the rest of the guys stayed up on the levee.? This is at Johnston in Sacramento, where the ex-SP Martinez Sub crosses the American River between Sacramento and Roseville, about 4 miles from my house. I guess the reason I'm not freaked out by snakes is, in part, that we've had a pet snake for years.? Daughter Elizabeth, then age 10, wanted this python at a reptile show, but Anne insisted we return it the next day. The python was a baby and would have grown a LOT bigger. She still has her corn snake that just celebrated 20 years being a member of the family on Christmas.? The corn snake is full sized here.?? Mike Tisdale

Re: BNSF at James for Monday, 2019
The second unit is BNSF 991, a GE C44-9W, built in 1996.? Here are a couple of other photos of it in the Feather River Canyon.?? BNSF has had several variations of its orange paint scheme.? We see three of them on the units of this train.? Mike Tisdale

Re: SP in SF for Saturday, 1973
Just a guess, the first one had a mechanical and it was most expedient to just get the second unit to take the bad locomotive to Newhall Street to get fixed?

Fw: Truckee Webcam - Flanger eastbound
My friend Paul? got these screen shots of the Truckee, California web camera on Christmas morning.? A blizzard on Donner Pass closed Interstate 80 over the mountains today, but UP and Amtrak continued running. Mike ----- Forwarded Message -----
