4449 Monday, 1981
The last location where my dad and I saw the train was a bit north of Bray, California in perfect light as 4449 leads its train north. Greg Brown tells me that this is near the site of a siding called Jerome. 4449 returning north to Portland after Railfair 1981. This is a few miles south of the Oregon border, still in California. 16 May 1981 Mike Tisdale |
Young Fan Saturday, 2022
Young railfans and the mom of 2 of them watch and photograph CN 3005 on a westbound UP autorack train at Eckley Park, Crockett, California. It is good to see young people seeing and making photos and videos of railroad action. The kids knew that the CN unit was on this autorack train and insisted that their parents wait until the autorack train passed. 14 May 2022. |
Martinez Tuesday, 2022
On Friday, 29 April 2022, I took Amtrak Capitol train 541 to Martinez for a few hours of train watching. We had SC44 2123 and 4 California cars, all pretty full, which means that ridership is getting back up to pre-Covid levels. ?I spent a few hours at Martinez and caught several UP freights as well as the usual Amtrak Capitols and San Joaquins. Photos with SAC in the title are in Sacramento, those with MTZ are in Martinez. Mike Tisdale |
Re: Swiss Sunday, 1980
Thank you.? 1980, of course.? I have no idea why I typed 1920. It is meter gauge, so that accounts for the center coupler and no buffers.? ?The FO has a branch down to Goschenen from its mainline that went over the Gotthard Tunnel.? Goschenen is at the north portal of the Gotthard Tunnel, the old one that still sees some traffic as the base tunnel now has most trains.? ?In 1980, of course, all traffic went through the old tunnel. I'm glad someone reads my posts! Mike Tisdale

Re: Open Air Dome Cars
Hi Phil, The train I was on in Sri Lanka that was so crowded was downhill from Kandy to Colombo.? Not sure if they needed an extra unit to get the crowd up the hill or not. Bangladesh is a giant river delta.? The main grades the railways there face are approaches to bridges. In either case, the people in both Bangladesh and Sri Lanka are not large by American standards.?? Mike

I was on a car that overcrowded in Sri Lanka (nobody on the root due to tunnels) and it was sorta like standing at attention in formation, except if I fell over, I wouldn't fall, I'd just lean on someone.? Calrailfans at Mariposa Yard, Stockton, 12 Feb 2022 -- for Friday
Calrailfans at Mariposa Yard, Stockton, 12 Feb 2022 Our February 2022 Calrailfans meet was at Mariposa Yard, near Stockton, California. I got there fairly late in the afternoon, after the sun had swung to the west side of the track. The light was not on our side on the east side of the line, but I joined the photo lines for the 2 Amtrak San Joaqunis and 2 BNSF freights that passed in the time I was there. A Ferromex EMD unit was a high point of the day, Mike Tisdale |
