Burlington Tuesday, 2010

Unlike Ottumwa's 4-6-4, 3003 is close enough to the BNSF track that it can be incorporated into photos of main line trains. Burlington preserved a good number of steam locomotives and S-4 4-6-4s are stuffed an mounted at Ottumwa and Burlington, Iowa and Galesburg, Illinois along the California Zephyr's route.

I think the lead SD70MAC on the westbound empty coal train is BNSF 9924.

This is in Burlington, Iowa. I stopped off there en route to Chicago on a trip on 21 April 2010.

Amtrak's 51st Birthday, 2022

Today is Amtrak's 51st birthday and 2022 marks the 30th anniversary of the Capitol Corridor trains between Auburn, Sacramento and the San Francisco Bay Area. Currently there are 11 Capitol Corridor round trips between Sacramento and Oakland on weekdays, with one train going to and from Auburn and six trains serving San Jose. This is a few less than in pre-Covid days, but the service will probably continue to expand as the trains are getting crowded again.

I took a trip from Sacramento Martinez on Thursday, 29 April and spent some of my time in Martinez, California walking around and photographing trains.

Here is eastbound train 536, pushed by F59PHI #2014, crossing the Benicia-Martinez bridge and passing tanker Sperchios. It had made its station stop at Martinez at 4 pm and is catching some nice afternoon light

4 Wheel Sunday, 1980

Tullnerbach, Train of 4 wheel cars that I rode from Vienna to Tullnerbach.

Tullerbach is about 27 km west of Vienna. After arriving on an overnight train from Frankfurt, I spent the morning and early afternoon in Vienna before riding a train until a station looked interesting to stop at, which turned out to be Tullerbach. I probably saw this train of older 4 wheel coaches and decided to ride it to wherever looked good. 4 wheel cars on the main line out of the capital were not found in many European countries in 1980.

The engine looks like it might be a BR 4061. I have no idea where this train would wind up and I don't think I got a good shot of the engine, but the 4 wheel cars are a good subject.

Steam Saturday, 1981

UP 8444 and 3985 at Applegate, California.

The UP steam engines were en route to Railfair 1981, the opening of the California State RR Museum history building in Sacramento. 3985 had just been restored to operation. A lot of people were chasing the engines over Donner that day. A fair number came to this spot in Applegate for the over and under shot.

Wendover Wednesday, 1983

July 20, 1983??

Following the pigs, UP 3772, led a combined Geneva, Utah to Pittsburg, California steel train and grain hopper train.

At the time, it seemed that EVERY UP train was pulled by SD40s and SD40-2s.

I was in Wendover, Utah with my Air National Guard unit supporting a Red Flag exercise.

Wendover is where the ex-WP and Interstate 80 cross from Utah to Nevada. The community straddles the state line, with gambling being legal on the Nevada side.

The train stopped, the crew got out and went to a nearby restaurant to get dinner and bring it back to eat on the go.

?
CSX GP38-2 on a short local freight heading east on the B&O Chicago Terminal. .

The sidelight brings out the bright green of spring.

Dolton is south of Chicago. The Indiana Harbor Belt and B&OCT cross the former C&EI, now jointly owned by UP and CSX, at Dolton. NS has a short, former PRR Panhandle, line that comes off the IHB here and goes to a steel plant. The Panhandle used to cross the IHB and C&EI here at a 45 degree angle, but is mostly abandoned. Still, the junction sees many trains every day.?

South Station Sunday, 1977

MBTA GP9 7543 arrives with a train of ex-New Haven coaches. I'm guessing the train is from Worcester or Providence. A PRR P-70 coach that was in the mix with the New Haven American Flyer cars is on the left and Amtrak and MBTA units await their next call to duty.

Utah Friday, 2010

Across the highway at Martin, the Utah Railway was assembling a train. Martin is the HQ of the Utah with its shops, the former office building (now not used as Utah is owned by Genesee and Wyoming) and the old water tank up the hill.

I spent a day in Helper, Utah in April 2010 on a trip from Sacramento to Chicago via the California Zephyr. Martin is a short distance from Helper.

A new perspective? on Sacramento's SP? station.? I was on the 6th floor of a fairly recently constructed medical building a block away from the station and had a good view of it.??

This is a new angle on a building? I've been photographing for 50? years.??

A stack train stopped for a while, with? a? gray? KCS unit in the consist.? ?Unfortunately, I only had my cell phone and the zoomed photo is not particularly clear.
