Happy Hanukkah and New Year, Phil That unit was a GP60.? The tunnel motors were SD45T-2s and SD40T-2s.? SP had the 45s, SP and Rio Grande had the 40s. The big spotting feature of the tunnel motors is the radiator at the rear of the unit.? Standard EMD GP and SD units have the radiators on the sides of the unit at the top of the hood with the fans in the roof, as on this GP60.? The tunnel motors have an opening at the bottom of the hood with the fans below the radiators, which are up by the roof.? This draws cooler air from lower..? SP was having trouble with units overheating in tunnels and snowheds because the air at the top was hot after a few units had dumped exhaust and hot air from the radiator output, so lowering the air intakes allowed cooler air from lower down in the enclosed spaces to be sucked up to the radiators.?? Here is a photo that I took in 1972, when the SD45T-2s were just starting to be delivered, that show s the differences between the radiator section of an tunnel motor, left and a standard SD45. ??
