Radio/Resource Networks (Nets) are organized, orderly communications between radio operators meant to practice or support emergency situations. Each radio operator has a call sign. For the Coastside:

Net Controller call sign: Neighborhood name + ¡°Control¡± (ex: Ocean Colony Control)?

Individual call sign: Street name + house number (ex: Eagle361).

Vision: Our neighborhood hams will monitor the FRS Net and, if necessary, will communicate via the Ham Net to first responders.

Note: You may need to go outdoors for better reception.

Radio Etiquette

  1. Listen before you speak. Is the channel clear? Think about what you are hearing.

  2. If you have time, write out your message before pressing the PTT button.??

  3. Use the 5-second rule. Speak for five seconds max. If you can¡¯t say it in 5 seconds say ¡°Break¡± and pause a few seconds to listen for anyone else and then continue again with call sign.?

  4. Wait for a response to your call. Unless it is a life-threatening emergency, wait for 10 or 15 seconds or so before you call again. The person you are calling may have heard you but is dealing with other distractions.

  5. Acknowledge a call out to you ASAP.

  6. Use plain English; avoid jargon and abbreviations, 10-codes

  7. Do not provide personal info on air (no victim names, etc).

  8. Speak at a rate that allows the writer to keep up.

How to use your walkie-talkie

There will be a webinar on September 3 from 6:30PM to 7:30PM hosted by Jim Williams.? It will cover the basics on:
  • how to configure your walkie-talkie
  • how to operate your walkie-talkie
  • radio etiquette?

It will be centered around the??but the general ideas of radio operation applies to all walkie-talkies.? You do not have to be CERT-certified or have an amateur radio license to operate a walkie-talkie.? If you have multiple walkies at home, it might be a good idea to invite your family member to join as well.? The suggested radio kit includes two radios.? So, the information you will learn can also be used during your private adventures.

Please sign up for the webinar?.

Welcome to OCEAN

Hello Everyone,

Thank you for joining the Ocean Colony Emergency Action Net.

There are three things that you should check out since it's your first time here:
1.? Messages - this will be out main information bank.? Check here first for updates.
2.? Calendar - we will track events here.??
3.? Files - any downloadable documents will be found here.

The one piece of equipment that you will need is an FRS walkie-talkie.? If you have one already, please familiarize yourself with how to operate it.? If you would like to invest in one, I suggest getting the Midland .? It has all the functions you will need and the power to reach the entire community.
