Welcome to OCEAN

Hello Everyone,

Thank you for joining the Ocean Colony Emergency Action Net.

There are three things that you should check out since it's your first time here:
1.? Messages - this will be out main information bank.? Check here first for updates.
2.? Calendar - we will track events here.??
3.? Files - any downloadable documents will be found here.

The one piece of equipment that you will need is an FRS walkie-talkie.? If you have one already, please familiarize yourself with how to operate it.? If you would like to invest in one, I suggest getting the Midland .? It has all the functions you will need and the power to reach the entire community.

Now, please take the time to check out Messages and the Calendar to catch up.

How to use your walkie-talkie

There will be a webinar on September 3 from 6:30PM to 7:30PM hosted by Jim Williams.? It will cover the basics on:
  • how to configure your walkie-talkie
  • how to operate your walkie-talkie
  • radio etiquette?

It will be centered around the??but the general ideas of radio operation applies to all walkie-talkies.? You do not have to be CERT-certified or have an amateur radio license to operate a walkie-talkie.? If you have multiple walkies at home, it might be a good idea to invite your family member to join as well.? The suggested radio kit includes two radios.? So, the information you will learn can also be used during your private adventures.

Please sign up for the webinar?.

Radio Etiquette

  1. Listen before you speak. Is the channel clear? Think about what you are hearing.

  2. If you have time, write out your message before pressing the PTT button.??

  3. Use the 5-second rule. Speak for five seconds max. If you can¡¯t say it in 5 seconds say ¡°Break¡± and pause a few seconds to listen for anyone else and then continue again with call sign.?

  4. Wait for a response to your call. Unless it is a life-threatening emergency, wait for 10 or 15 seconds or so before you call again. The person you are calling may have heard you but is dealing with other distractions.

  5. Acknowledge a call out to you ASAP.

  6. Use plain English; avoid jargon and abbreviations, 10-codes

  7. Do not provide personal info on air (no victim names, etc).

  8. Speak at a rate that allows the writer to keep up.

Your CALLSIGN

Radio/Resource Networks (Nets) are organized, orderly communications between radio operators meant to practice or support emergency situations. Each radio operator has a call sign. For the Coastside:

Net Controller call sign: Neighborhood name + ¡°Control¡± (ex: Ocean Colony Control)?

Individual call sign: Street name + house number (ex: Eagle361).

Vision: Our neighborhood hams will monitor the FRS Net and, if necessary, will communicate via the Ham Net to first responders.

Note: You may need to go outdoors for better reception.

Hi Gisella,

Sorry, the calendar reminder is a bit misleading.? I set that reminder to send a broadcast email to all our members yesterday morning.? It was meant as a reminder to all to have their radios ready.?

Dennis

Our first dry run

Is everyone free this Monday evening at 7:00?

I would like us to have our first informal radio check on Monday, 8/31/2020.? If this in not a convenient time, please let me know by responding here.? I picked Monday night arbitrarily.? If all can make it, please:

1.? Make sure your radio is charged.
2.? Tune your radio to FRS CH9 at 7PM.
3.? I will begin talking then.

Please remember your handle:? you will be know as your street name and house number (e.g. Eagle361).? We do this to protect your privacy as we are going to be using a public frequency.?? If for some reason, I am unable to hear you but someone else can, that person can relay your transmissions for you.? If nobody can hear you at all, shoot me a message here.? I will be standing by with my laptop.?

We will not have an agenda other than us trying out our radios to see if we are heard.? The net (radio meeting) will be open for some Q&A.? You can present your questions and concerns then.? The net should last less than half an hour.

I hope to hear from you all then!

Re: Our first dry run

Dennis-

I'm good for 7PM Monday, and would like to check-in with you prior to that, since I just realized that my two Midland walkie-talkies,
wich have been standing by for a couple of years or so, have never contacted anyone else! :-(.? I would also like to see how my 2m
ham radio performs on FRS.? Could u give me ur phone number, so I can call you over the weekend?? (I don't seem to have it in my
phone!).

Do you think we want to try to involve our OCEAN group in the Great Shakeout CERT exercise that's coming up?? It could give us a
good idea of why are organizing like this for emergency communications.

Thanks for your leadership!

Re: Our first dry run

You can contact me for a radio check this weekend.? I, too, will be using my VHF/UHF radio as my FRS station.? I believe the frequency is 467.5875MHz (no CCTS or DTS).

If you look at our Calendar, The Great Shakedown on 10/10 is there.? This is what we are shooting for.? This is why I'm so excited with getting OCEAN up and running before then.? Sadly, out of 20 people that showed interest, only 6 stepped up to the plate.? I am in the process of obtaining a roster of CERTs here in OC.??

Aside from you and I, Corwin is the only other ham I know in OC.? There should be more.? It will take some more time to find them.

Re: Our first dry run

Oops, it's The Great Shakeout.? I will update the Calendar.

Maybe someone bought a pair of GTX1000s. Hopefully someone can loan one to you by Monday.

Does anybody else have an extra walkie for Giselle to borrow?
