Re: The Great Shakeout
Hi Everyone,
Sorry for the delay. I have finished scripts for each of us for 10/10.? They are in the Files/Great Shakeout Scripts. Please download your script and read it well.? If you have any questions/comments/concerns, email me immediately.? These, like movie scripts, are guidelines.? House addresses, street names, etc. need to be updated to suit your environment.? This also means that Net Control will not know the exact traffic you will present on the day of the exercise.? Be creative.? Some might take longer to assess themselves.? Others, might be delayed by people talking to them along the way.? So, span out your scenarios at odd times (e.g. Scene 1 @ 10:25AM, Scene 1 @ 10:39AM, and so on). Take notes... lots of notes. What did you request that did not get addressed? What went wrong? How could it have been prevented? What was unrealistic?? How? What will you eat for lunch? 73, Dennis |
Re: OCEAN Map
I updated the OCEAN Map to include the data you have provided.? I am missing Paul's data and I will input them when I get 'em.? As you already know, these "territories" are ideal (no stops/no duties/no delays/no distractions).? Realistically, you will have stops/duties/delays/distractions.? So, I defined each territory as your primary and secondary territories.? Your primary territories are are primary zone of responsibilities where you will find neighbors you know.? If you secure your primary territories, you may then explore your secondary territories.?
We can discuss this during tonight's Net. If this approach is acceptable, I will proceed with creating scripts for everyone. |

Homework due THIS FRIDAY.
Objective:? Determine how many houses you can inspect within 45 minutes.? This will determine if you have enough time to inspect your neighborhood.? If so, we can plan on inspecting adjacent neighborhoods. Task: 1.? Step outside your house. 2.? Visually inspect each house in your immediate neighborhood (e.g. Eagle Trace Drive loop for me). Check each house from the street (right, middle, left, next).? ? -? See how many houses you can check within?45 minutes.? ? -? If you complete this task in less than 45 minutes, note how long it took you to complete the task. ? -? If you did not, note the number of houses you were able to inspect. 3.? Email your report to me at?kn6ipe@.... ? -? How many were you able to cover? ? -? Did you do this on-foot or did you use a vehicle? ? -? Were you alone or did someone assist you? Extra: If you complete your task early, you may explore your next adjacent neighborhood (e.g.? Bayhill for me).? Count how many houses you can inspect within the time remaining. Please remember to email your report by Friday, 9/25/20, at 7PM. |

The Great Shakeout
First of all, I would like to congratulate all of you who participated in last night's Net.? After a few minutes of troubleshooting, we were able to get 3.5 walkie-talkie (WT) operators up and running:? Eagle361, Eagle368, WingedFoot2101, and Carnoustie127!?
We are officially live.? So, now what?? The Great Shakeout by Fire Chief Dave Cosgrave is what's next.? It is scheduled to happen on October 10, 2020 between 10:00am and 12:00pm.? For more information, please visit: https://www.coastsidecert.com/ We will be running a simulated earthquake disaster.? Basically, we will be attending the Chief's zoom meeting (invite TBD).? At around 10:00am, a simulated earthquake will occur.? This is where we come in. We will: 1.? duck under a secure structure and ride it out. 2.? assess ourselves (and our family) that we are okay. 3.? assess our home and determine whether or not it is safe. 4.? turn on our WTs and tune to CH2. 5.? GO OUTSIDE and assess our neighborhood for damages and emergencies (this will be scripted). 6.? report your findings to Net Control (to simplify, I will be Net Control).? Do this OUTSIDE for the best reception possible for our WTs. 7.? if possible, meet at our rally point (lake bench). 8.? relay reports to the Emergency Operations Control (EOC).? I will do this with my ham radio. 9.? relay back messages from EOC to you (if any). 10.? repeat Steps 5 - 9 for other OC neighborhoods that we did not cover. 11.? do this as quickly, calmy, and effectively as possible. If we cover all of OC, then that's GREAT!? If not, then we will cover what we can.? The goal is to get communications up throughout the entire Coastside Region and to convey messages successfully from you to the EOC and back to you. Some notes to ponder: 1.? We cannot cover the entire Ocean Colony with just 4 people in 1.5 hours. 2.? Ideally, we should have 2 groups of people at the Rally Point:? a HT Net Control + scribe and a Ham Radio Operator + scribe.? That's 4 people!? Realistically, we need a WT Net Control and a Ham operator (2 people).? More than likely for this event, the ham operator will also be the WT Net Control unless we can have more participants.? Being a CERT is a plus. 3.? You don't have to be an adult to participate.? You just need a WT!? Are you married?? Got kids?? Do you have a pet that can operate a radio or write?? You can be a kid with a radio and a bike/skateboard/etc.? You can be an adult with a bike and a WT.? You can be a senior with a WT at the window on at the front porch.? You can even be a senior with a skateboard and a WT at someone else's window!? It would be super to have a spouse/partner/child scribe for us. 4.? Not all requests will be fulfilled by EOC.? For the most part, we will have to fend for ourselves.? That's when it's time for our Community Emergency Response Team members (CERTs) to shine.? We have 2 CERTs in our Net now.? Our CERTs will address most of our concerns. 5.? I am open to suggestions.? Feel free to throw an idea or two in the mix. 6.? We only have 3 weeks to prepare for this event.? When the time comes, ready or not, it will be "GO TIME". 7.? We will do 2 debriefings:? one immediately after the event and one during the following OCEAN WT Meeting. 8.? I will get our scripts ready and hand them out.? We only have 4 operators at this moment.? So, I will prep at least 4 scripts.? I will have them ready this week. 9.? Rolls might change on-the-fly.? Be prepared for anything. 10.? Remember, our primary goal is to establish communications.? Try not to be a hero and enter a burning house to save a neighbor or a pet.? We need everyone to be on their WTs. Please post your questions and comments to this thread. -- Dennis Tiu KN6IPE OCEAN Administrator |
