Chopmist Hill, Rhode Island's Secret Listening Post in WWII 6
Interesting article. I do like the quote from the article. ¡°It was not the receptivity of the location, but the advanced secret radio equipment used there that made Chopmist Hill¡¯s place in history.¡± He added, ¡°Though reception was remarkably good, it was 99 percent knowhow that created such a success between 1941 and 1945.¡± Just before Pearl Harbor, Chopmist Hill in Scituate, R.I., was the center of the world. That¡¯s what the Federal Communications Commission discovered in 1941. The hill¡¯s geographic and atmospheric conditions were extremely favorable for radio reception, and its receivers could grab wireless signals from much of the globe.... http://stationhypo.com/.../chopmist-hill-rhode-islands.../ Eric de Eric Howell W4MC w4mc@... . . . _ . _ -- Eric Howell W4MC w4mc@...

Ghost of hamfests past 9
Video of the site of Hamvention for many, many years. Some very fond memories from the 80s and 90s. Not so fond the last couple of Hamventions at Hara. Taken starting on Basore Rd, turning onto Shiloh Springs Rd. Hope the 5MB files gets through groups.io. UW

Anyone Going to Dayton? 2
Gents, Hamvention is a week away! Anybody going to Dayton this year? Eddie AE4TQ, Eric W4MC, and I will be in the boneyard¡ªspaces 7214-7217 in the northeast corner of the flea market oval on the outside row. Stop by if you need to sit a spell, drop off a boat anchor, get out of the sun/rain, or have a cold drink. I¡¯ll have water. Eric may have some water contaminated with hops and barley. Not sure how much stock to put in the long range weather guesser predictions, but for what it¡¯s worth, you can leave the parka at home. Friday and Saturday should be partly cloudy and temps in the mid- 80s. Don¡¯t forget the sun screen. (Really? Friday AND Saturday with no rain? I¡¯ll believe it when I see it. ) Dave UW

Lunch and FD planning Saturday 5
Looks like the list of who is interested and available for lunch Saturday has whittled down to AE4TQ, WB4SQ, and me. If you guys (or others) are interested let me know and I¡¯ll pick a place. If not, we can just use the reflector to share ideas. Dave UW

When it rains . . . 5
In 40 years as a ham, until today I had never worked Korea on 12m. This evening I worked 8 Korean stations on 12m. Go figure! Must be some kind of special event going on in Korea. Korean QSO party? Hopefully at least one is on LOTW. ? Dave UW

logging? 14
Hi folks, What logging program or method do you use? I'm still in the stone-age, logging to paper during QSO, then putting that in a spreadsheet that ends up on Google for public viewing at <http://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=0AkvliyYU9uA1dHZZVUpadkM1TG5wREdMZ2V1WG1NZnc> and then mailing out paper cards for meaningful QSOs. I'm interested in modernizing ... maaaybe to LoTW. What do you use, what problems or benefits does that have for you? Nick KI4YSP -- Nick Hecker Decatur, GA, USA 0x87209940

FD2022 10
FD2022 Hope everyone had a super Easter weekend! Well, from the folks responding so far, it looks like for FD 2022 we have AE4TQ Eddie, W4MC Eric, WB4SQ Gary, AJ2Y Joe, and KE4UW Dave in for sure, and maybe WK4U Tim, W2SWA Steve, and KI4YSP Nick for some level of maybe/possibly/part time. For those who are interested in participating this year (or anyone who wants to come), how about lunch in a couple weeks to talk about what we might want to do this year. Some of us may be going to the Calhoun Hamfest next Saturday 4/23 (with a side trip to the shooting range 10 minutes away). So how about the following Saturday 4/30? We can pick a place sort of central to those who are coming to lunch. Feel free to share your thoughts via email as well. I¡¯ll start . . . (hee hee): ¡¤ With the number of folks we will have, we¡¯ll need to keep the setup simple. A few wire antennas, the 40m verticals, the 6m yagi, and maybe a wire vertical for 80m, and call it a day. Three radios? Maybe a fourth dedicated to VHF/UHF primarily for 6m? ¡¤ I think we learned a lot last year about how to operate off of solar panels and batteries. It worked pretty well, and we could probably to that again with minimal setup effort, including a wee bit of help from one small generator that I have if the solar panels can¡¯t quite keep up. ¡¤ Joe can rack up as many CW points as he cares to, but like last year, it may be the digital modes that gets us the most points. I¡¯m thinking at least two, maybe three stations set up for digital. ¡¤ For much of the day, we will probably have 40, 20, 15, 10, and 6m open. Three or four stations all on different bands might simmer down the interference problems a bit . . . Or 6m may be dead as a hammer and the solar flux may drop below 100 again and make 10 and 15 useless. YMMV ¡¤ Regardless of the number of transmitters, we have some options in the class we operate in. We could do the traditional A class, of course. We could do the antenna setup the weekend before and use shore power for everything and operate D class. Or we could set up the weekend before and use emergency power sources and operate E class. Whichever we choose, who you can work and points per Q are the same. Other ideas? UW

Field Day 2022 16
Field Day 2022 Gents, It¡¯s getting time to make some plans for FD 2022, but maybe first we ought to figure out who is really interested in playing Field Day this year. So who¡¯ s in this year? Once we figure out who¡¯s in, maybe we can arrange a get-together of those folks to figure out what we want to do. I was wondering how this might work out this year, with my daughter, son-in-law, and two granddaughters living here as well. But first Margaret decided to go to South Africa in June to visit her mom, and with a small contribution from me my daughter and her family are planning a weekend away, so it will be a bit easier to have run of the house. So we can set up whatever we want. Last year we operated 3A, 100W max power, mostly wire antennas for HF and a yagi for 6m, all run off of batteries and solar panels. Very quiet in the back yard. Friday setup was just me and the spud gun shooting some lines over trees to put up wire antennas for 20, 15, and 10 and move wires for 80, 40. Saturday we put up the 6m yagi and the phased verticals for 40. We had one station on CW, and two stations on FT-4/8. I don¡¯t thing we made a single phone contact. There were a total of five folks involved. We each got to operate about as much as we wanted to, and if the radios sat unused for a bit, so what? I thought it was fun as we could chat a bit while working digital, and the noise on the deck was pretty low for the CW folks. We made a bit over 1000 Qs, and a bit over 5000 points. Very nice balance between decent setup and level of effort to set things up. It worked pretty well, but we were losing the battle with the batteries towards the end. But I¡¯m sure we had additional batteries we could have had available (but didn¡¯t think we needed), and I also have an EU2000 Honda generator we could use if we had to. (Using the generator wouldn¡¯t affect the score, as we can still only claim the x2 power multiplier because we are running 100W. To get the x5 multiplier you are limited to 5W max.) With the recent rules change, ARRL has made permanent the practice of home stations (Class D) working other home stations for QSO credit. I don¡¯t like it, but it is what it is. Maybe we could operate as class D and skip all the setup. Or maybe do the setup outside FD weekend (a week early?) and operate class D or class E (home station on emergency power). Just something to consider. So let me know who is interested this year, and if you are interested in part time, one day only, the full weekend, or whatever. Share any thoughts you have via groups.io. Ukraine SWL
Condx are difficult, but I've heard some interesting transmissions that appear to be related to the ongoing situation in Eastern Europe on at least 4.724 USB and 8.131 USB. Intermittent but interesting, ranging from 33 to 59. There's probably some digital that I'm missing as well. And I got on to do a little CW; stuck in SWL mode instead. 73, KI4YSP

Sad news 7
Sad news Gents, Zyg AF4MP contacted me this morning to let me know his XYL Shirley passed away over the weekend. Zyg found her unresponsive Saturday morning, called 911, and administered CPR until the EMTs arrived. She had no pulse when the EMTs got there. Doctors at the hospital told Zyg the she had had a heart attack, which he could diagnose from the brain scan that indicated a cardiac arrest signature. I don¡¯t have any other details. Shirley¡¯s son (lives in Roswell) is with Zyg now, and her daughter is flying in today from LA, so he has family around him. I¡¯ve asked if there is anything he needs. Zyg just asked me to pass the news along to the local hams. Feel free to get the word to others that knew Zyg that aren¡¯t on the N4N list. Dave UW
