FW: ARLS008 MIR-SAT1 CubeSat Expected to Deploy from the ISS on June 22
OK, maybe I'm just getting old and crotchety. But Mauritius can put a satellite in orbit, but AMSAT can't seem to launch one that works? What am I missing here. FD 2020
7
Had a fun evening with Eddie (AE4TQ) and Joe (AJ2Y) her at the house, and Eric (W4MC) and Tom (KT4XN) via Zoom. So here¡¯s a summary of our conclusions: Attendance at the N4N FD site should be limited to those who are ¡°fully vaccinated¡± against COVID-19. Also, to limit folks to a reasonable size gathering, it is not a good idea to include non-operators (wives, significant others, and kids), especially since so far kids can not be vaccinated. I know this is a departure from past practice, but unfortunately, it¡¯s in everyone¡¯s best interest this year. We need to limit the size of the on-site gathering to 12-15 folks at any one time. There will be a core group likely on-site all weekend who have fully committed to being here, some of whom have to travel quite a ways to get here. We may need to have sign-ups to fill remaining slots. The number of radios we have on the air will depend on the number of folks committed to being here¡ªprobably determined a couple weeks ahead of FD at the latest. One CW station for sure, maybe two if we have operators. Two digital stations, and maybe one phone station too. Details to be finalized later. A few stations can be set up on the deck. If needed, we can use the large shed for one or two stations¡ªit will be quieter, and is also air-conditioned. We don¡¯t plan to use the big white tent. We do plan to have several of the 10x10 pop-up tents for hanging out, out of the sun/rain/whatever. We will have free access to the basement (including bathroom, shower, and air conditioned sleeping space). Access to the rest of the house will be limited. The risk/benefit doesn¡¯t have much benefit for Margaret. We want to gather the weekend before FD to do the computer setup for N1MM and WSJT-X to make sure we have everything working well before the big day. At the same time (maybe Saturday before FD) we¡¯ll take down the Steppir so I can do some repairs, and maybe put it back up. Antennas will be mostly wire dipoles and loops. Dipoles for 80, 20, 15; loops for 40, 10. Wire vertical for 80m. Phased verticals for 40m. Some kind of vertical polarization antenna for 20¡ªmaybe a half square. Hopefully we can get two signals on any band. 40 (times 2), 20 (times 2), 15, 10 during the day; 80 (times 2), 40 (times 2), 20 at night. The next step really is to get a decent head count for how many folks we will have each day. I¡¯ve heard from several folks, but most are un-declared. From what I know: In for the weekend are AJ2Y, AE4TQ, KE4UW, KN6RO, In for Saturday only: WK4U Expressed some interest: WA4YGG, N1KDO, KK4CHP, W2SWA So if it¡¯s 8 folks total, we¡¯re OK. We can handle maybe twice that many just fine. But I really need to ¡°maybe¡± folks to choose¡ªin or out. We¡¯ll plan the number of stations around the folks who say they are in. Those who are in will have an opportunity to sign up for some time slots to operate. Yes, it sucks to have to limit things. So who is in for FD 2020? Yes or no. Maybe = no. Dave UW

from Tim - FD thoughts...

Eddie. Thanks for the zoom setup. For me it won't work, because I'm planning to be out on the road with my bike during that time. I'd love to play Field Day this June. I have signed up to participate in the GA 400 bike ride that Sunday, so I'm only in on Saturday. Since the group size will probably be smaller than normal, lets take advantage of that and make the scope of work for setup/teardown smaller as well. I KNOW an end fed antenna isn't all that hot, but it's EASY to put up. Maybe two or three of them? I've got a never-used 20M end fed here at home. Not sure how many radios we'd have going. Maybe the 40M vertical out front? And I love the contest style of operating, but maybe take advantage of the changes this year and play a bit more relaxed than usual? Heck I might even enjoy playing on a digital setup for a while? Certainly some of Eric's butt for dinner. Swim a bit more :) If we're small enough, put all radios on the back porch and forego setting up the big white tent? I'll be available to teardown as needed, but not until that Monday (or later). Tim, WK4U

Zoom Meeting Details for Planning gathering at Dave's place Thursday 1900
Hi All, I set-up a 40 minute zoom meeting starting at 7:30pm eastern for folks to call in for tomorrow's Field Day Planning gathering at Dave's - unfortunately my subscription doesn't allow for a meeting of longer duration, but at least folks can check-in to register interest... Well, a week or so into this, I guess choosing a time hasn¡¯t been what one would call an overwhelming success. But I did get to chat with Jeff1 and Eric last week, and chatted with Ernie for 45 minutes or so tonight. So lots better than the previous six months. I¡¯ll keep trying around 7:00-7:30pm local. Might not make it Tuesday (taking Jenna to the airport for her return to Germany, unfortunately taking the two darling granddaughters with her). But other nights I should make it, good lord willing and the creek don¡¯t rise. Dave UW

FD Planning Gathering
10
Gents, We¡¯re about two months out, so it¡¯s probably about time we start finalizing some plans for field day. I¡¯m not sure what that might look like, but I could sure use some input from the group on what might be some practical approaches we could/should take this year. Email would be great, but some face to face discussion is a hell of a lot more efficient. So . . . . For anyone interested, lets get together next Thursday evening at 1900 local at my place and bounce around some ideas. If you plan to come, let me know. If you can¡¯t make it, but have some thoughts or ideas, post them. To make the gathering just a little more enticing, Eddie may honor us with some samples of his latest brewing project. To prime the pump a little bit: It seems to me that the full tilt boogie affair with kids and significant others here most of the weekend probably doesn¡¯t make sense. It also makes sense to gather only those folks who have been ¡°fully vaccinated¡±. But beyond that, how should we organize this event? Maybe schedule and plan around having two or three people per station on site at any given time? Maybe 12-18 folks max at any time. Enough for some socializing, but not everybody all the time? Maybe a ¡°core group¡± of 6 to 10 folks who will be here the whole time, with others coming and going? That would make sense for some of the folks coming from too far away to make multiple trips. Should we go back to using one or two of the white tents to keep things spread out, with stations 6 feet apart? Or maybe to keep things simple, use several 10x10 pop-ups to keep setup simple? Or, if it helps, I do have AC in one of the sheds. ? Should we skip the yagis and just use wire antennas like I put up last year to keep the workload light and the need for large setup parties to a minimum? How many stations? I¡¯d suggest we have all the cw stations we have operators for. At least two, maybe three digital stations? At least one, maybe two phone stations? Lots of combinations and permutations. So lets gather whoever is most interested next Thursday and bounce some ideas around. I¡¯ll provide beer to supplement Eddie¡¯s, and some chips/salso/queso. You provide some ideas. Dave UW

Field Day 2021??

Maybe if enough of us have had our 2nd COVID vaccine shots (no later than 2 weeks before Field Day) we could rustle up a modest quorum of folks to participate on-site at Dave's this year, if Dave and Emma are willing of course? ? Sent from AT&T Yahoo Mail on Android

I haven¡¯t been particularly successful linking up with folks on 3745 for months now. I¡¯m just wondering if it wouldn¡¯t be a good idea to pick a time to meet. So how about 7:00pm to 7:30pm local, 2300 to 2330Z? I¡¯ll try to be in the shack listening around 2300Z. If folks prefer a different time, speak up! Dave UW

Have returned home from the hamfest. Excellent weather with a high of about 65 degrees. Much better turnout than I expected. $2.50 chilli dog was quite good. See you all in Huntsville. Hamfest is offering a deal on hotel rooms. Steve WM6P

WX doesn't look too promising for boneyard on Saturday. Warm, but wet. Bummer. I don't need anything in particular, but was hoping to cruise the boneyard. With this forecast, I'm going to pass.
