New site - geeky stuff - need writers
Hey guys & gals, I have just fired up another web site - this one dedicated to geeks. The url is http://www.aboutgeeks.com . I am looking for techy/ham/geeky people to write for the site. Once established, I have arranged to become syndicated through rss (go to syndic8.com for more info). The readership could easily reach into the 500,000 + once syndicated. The site also has gadget news etc.. Anyone who is interested, and can show the ability to write will be given his/her own column. Check it out and let me know if interested ! Thanks 73 Phil ________________________________________________ Phil West (N4NBL) Internet : phil@... KN6RO Tower Party 5
I sent this out on Evite, but if I missed you, here it is again. Could someone please bring a high wattage soldering Iron? I need to install a couple of PL-259s. When: Saturday, August 28th, 9:00 AM Where: Roger's House, 3441 Steve Drive NW, Marietta, GA Telephone: 770-421-1401 Directions: Heading West on 120 from Marietta, (Whitlock Avenue, then it turns into Dallas Highway), go 6.2 miles west from the square on 120. Turn Right on Due West Road. There is a Bank of America on the corner. Turn Right on Steve Drive, which is the 2nd road on the right. I'm in the first house on the right. You can also come across Barrett Parkway. Just take it West of Highway 41 until you intersect with Dallas Highway. Turn Right on Dallas Highway and proceed about a mile and a half to Due West Road. Turn Right on Due West Road. The Second Street on the Right is Steve Drive. It looks like the weather is going to cooperate, so let's go for it, get KN6RO's tower up so he can quit sending out all of the messages about it. The good news, no climbing required. It'll be just like raising a tower at field day, except the tower is 50 feet and anchored in 6000 lbs of concrete. I'll have the coffee, soda, food, and beer (it's happy hour somewhere). Thanks for all the help!

Field Day Flotsam and Jetsam 4
Since we may be gathering Saturday at Roger's, I'll try the lost and found add again! I have the following leftovers from field day that are in need of their true owner: 1. Wool? olive drab army-type blanket (not as thick as the "real" army blankets of WWII fame) that probably came from the 12x14 "sleeping" tent 2. Two AC power strips that both look nearly new--one, however, was laid on a piece of very wet newspaper during the get-it-in-the-car-there's-a-storm-coming rush. The newspaper adhered nicely when it dried--got most of it off with goo-gone. 3. One SO-239 to SO-239 "bullet" which looks to be good quality stuff (not the 98-cent hamfest special). Looks like a panel mount type threaded all the way from tip to tip. Is anyone missing anything? I didn't go through the plastic bins all that carefully when I unloaded, but I can easily do so if somebody is missing something. KN6RO Tower Project Update 10
Well Gang, it's time for the latest KN6RO tower project update. The line pump did in fact manage to show up last Thursday, late in the evening. Unfortunately Kimberly had the digicam and I didn't get any pictures of the fun. However, the base did get poured, and the coins put in for good luck! Actually, I finished the concrete and put the coins right on top! I figure that without all of that mud to go through, the electrons have a much better chance of getting home. So, at that point, I had a huge concrete cube in the ground with 10 feet of tower in in. Last night I got a little froggy and bolted the second section on, walked it up, so now I have 20 feet in the air. Lesson learned - For field day raising 20 feet of tower is a 7 man operation, but with it stuck on a fold over base and 6000 Lbs of concrete, it can be done by one man. 20 feet is about all I can handle by myself. I think that I'm going to need about 6 folks to stand the whole 50 feet of tower with the antennas attached. The KT-34 construction is coming along. Dave Moss, If you're available Saturday Morning for a couple or 4 hours to help me with the antenna, I sure could use it. The last of the stuff I need is not going to be here until the 26th...and with the weather this weekend scheduled to be questionable (which means it'll be fine), I would like to see who is available for Saturday, August 28th to have a tower party and get this thing done. I have lots of beer and lots of food!!!! I'm attaching some pics for your viewing pleasure. The ones of the balun on the beam are interesting...notice how the aluminum plate now forms to the balun courtesy of the stainless hose clamps. See y'all soon! 73 de KN6RO Roger

Friday, August 20 7:30 PM - Please join us for refreshments at 7:30, meeting starts promptly at 8 PM At White Hall, Rm 207, Emory University. (See Directions section below) This month we feature another intriguing subject! Can you imagine the most intense explosion in the universe? An explosion that shines a million trillion times as bright as the Sun? It's called a gamma-ray burst and it's a hot topic. Delving into the exciting world of Gamma-Ray Astronomy, we will hear from one of the country's top experts, Dr. Charles "Chip" Meegan. His presentation is titled "Gamma-Ray Bursts - The Most Powerful Explosions in the Universe". Dr. Meegan is an Astrophysicist with the Gamma-Ray Astrophysics Group at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center. Don't know much about Gamma-Ray Astronomy? Well, then August 20th is your chance to learn something new and exciting. High energy gamma-rays are found at the far end of the electromagnetic radiation spectrum. The limited visible light we see is found in the middle. Gamma rays can have over a billion times the energy of the light that is visible to our eyes. They are also quite harmful to life but fortunately Earth's atmosphere protects us. Of course, since our atmosphere absorbs gamma-rays, these high energy photons are near impossible to study from Earth. This is why the work of NASA's Gamma-Ray Astrophysics Team is important. They investigate the high energy regime of our universe, studying gamma-ray phenomena such as pulsars, black holes, and other exotic astrophysical objects. Dr. Meegan has more than 20 years experience designing, building and operating instruments to study gamma-ray bursts. He is also the Principal Investigator developing a new burst monitor, which is to be flown on NASA's Gamma-Ray Large Area Space Telescope, or GLAST, planned for an upcoming launch. He likes working puzzles, and enjoys putting together the clues to solve mysteries. Come join us to hear what he has to say about one of our most exciting mysteries. More Sun stuff
Not much sunspot activity when we looked through the solar telescope, but more is coming... -Nan KG4IUL Space Weather News for July 13, 2004 http://spaceweather.com SOLAR ACTIVITY WATCH: The Sun has been mostly quiet for weeks, but this could soon change. One or more big sunspots are turning toward Earth, raising the possibility of solar flares, geomagnetic storms and auroras in the days and weeks ahead. MORNING STAR: It's not easy waking up at dawn, but this week it's worth doing. Venus, the "morning star," is absolutely brilliant in the eastern sky around sunrise. On July 14th, Venus and the crescent moon will appear side by side--a lovely sight. On July 15th Venus reaches maximum brightness. The planet is delightful to see through a telescope; it looks like a tiny crescent Moon.

Friday, July 16 7:30 PM - Please join us for refreshments at 7:30, meeting starts promptly at 8 PM At White Hall, Rm 207, Emory University. (See Directions section below) Our guest speaker this month is Dr. Douglas R. Gies, Professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Georgia State University. His subject is a strange and fascinating double star system called SS433. What makes this star system unique? In an orbital dance of 13 days, one hot swollen star is being consumed by it's collapsed superdense partner. This system is considered a microquasar, which is a binary system in which a normal star orbits, and loses material to, a compact nearby object, such as a black hole or a neutron star. It could even teach us how quasars and other galactic nuclei are powered. Another interesting feature is that as the superdense partner pulls spiraling glowing gases from the swollen star, it then blasts it out in narrow jets at a quarter of the speed of light. As the collapsed star wobbles, the jets create a "lawn sprinkler" effect in space. So is the superdense partner a neutron star or perhaps a black hole? Enjoy a presentation of the latest current events in astronomy. Lecture - 6:30-7:30 PM. "The Outer Planets". Explore the outer planets with special guest speaker Dr. Richard Schmude, Jr. "The planet Uranus has continued to grow dimmer during the last few years. It is now 0.07 magnitudes (or 7 percent) dimmer than what it was in 1991. Older brightness measurements dating back to the 1930s suggests that this planet gets brighter and dimmer with its seasons. During the 1990s, Neptune became brighter but during the last 3 or 4 years, that planet's brightness has remained nearly constant. Pluto has undergone some strange brightness changes since the 1950s. Some upcoming events include the eclipses and transits of the moons of Uranus across that planet's disc along with a possible reappearance of cloud belts on Uranus during the next few years." There is usually a dark sky observing session after the meetings. FD operator list
I'm going to print some QSLs to respond to some requests for N4N confirmations for this year's operation (3 cards received so far), and as we did last year I'd like to have the call signs of each operator on the QSL card. Here's a list of folks I can remember having participated in set up, operation, or tear down. Have I missed anyone? I thought we had something like 30 folks participate, but I can only recall 18.
