I think the jack is a 1/8 mini type, Jim probably will have an adapter from 1/4 to 1/8 inch. We will not be needing a programmable keyer, the PC does a real good job. I will use whoever's paddles are connected... Actually the whole FD can be run without paddles. Mike, NE4S -----Original Message-----

I know that we're looking forward to it, and have an ambitious itinerary planned out to visit 10 to 12 sites, time and weather permitting. (Let's hope this nice weather lasts through the weekend.)Unfortunately, we can't visit with all of you who so kindly issued an invitation (though we appreciated the temptations you offered of those goodies like steak, and blackened fish, and some of the "best chicken in the southeast"....)We're gonna try to hit some new spots this year, so as much as we wanted to, we couldn't do that and still make it to all of the sites we visited last year, too.... Anyhow, since this year is the first year that we'll be attempting to handle Field Day messages via packet, SCOTT HARTLAGE, KF4PWI, thought it might be a good idea to do a little "practice" to check out the system. 12 volt rig?
Tim Lemmon
I heard last night on the net we don't have many 12
volt HF rigs. I have a fully stocked (including crystal filter - good for CW) Kenwood TS-850SAT. He doesn't like 110 VAC. He LOVES 13 VDC! IF this radio would help out our reliability, I'll bring it, along with any accessories we might need. Just a thought . . . -Tim __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? SBC Yahoo! Well,
I forgot about the radio roundtable... Braves won and I went to bed. This was probably covered... Jim Nail and I tested the CW station and computer keying on Sunday. It all works fine. We also set up a set of messages. The paddle is also available operating on the radio keyer/speed control. The only outstanding point was the serial interface adapter, which I think Tom was going to supply at setup. We have not heard any comment from Tim, or Al, but hope these arrangements work for them too. I will start and test the 4K generator today, and bring it out Thursday AM. I have about 100 feet of #14 type extension cord. Not heavy enough for much, I will bring it JIC. Has someone gotten any "dayglow" plastic marker tape for the guy wires? To prevent "hangups"? I saw some at Home Depot for a buck or two, and we can get some out there if needed. Trailer/tent... I like the trailer if it could be less crowded. How about both? Even guy one side of the tent onto the trailer. Or? That may have been discussed, sorry. I think it is all working. See you Thurs. Mike, NE4S |

I agree that the trailer will be noisy but will be cool in the summer
with the air going and a small fan. I also agree that a tent will be a

There is a door in this wall opening to the living quarters which is climate controlled and carpeted (I am working on furnishing it).? I am in the process of insulating the trailer - front and rear (should be completed this week). The cargo area has 3 large windows on one side and three smaller slide-style windows on the other. the confinement of the trailer (metal, at that) will be VERY distracting for 4 operators... I like your idea of setting-up the tent on Thursday... if at least adequate, then go with it.. if not, then move-in the trailer.. I have 24-mile Radar on the bus, along with DirecTV for satellite broadcast weather reports. If weather looks to get questionable, we can always watch on Radar and take appropriate action. I've operated in near Typhoon conditions under a tent (with no dry shelter around for the radios)... it CAN be done, but it will require a number of guys (fellas) to hold-on to guy-ropes. just my 2-cents... -----Original Message-----

Advantages/Disadvantages of the trailer: + Much ore durable and weather-tight than the tent + Has some air conditioning capability (will need a fan to push air from front compartment to the back) + Has an awning that could be used for one of the stations (weather-permitting) - Will require another generator running essentially full-time for the air conditioning - May be noisy with four stations calling in a fairly small box (had some problems with this in the past) - Will be a tight squeeze with four stations inside--OK to operate, but tough to move around. - Not real conducive to GOTA operation with inexperienced op and a "coach/mentor" (lot of conversations going on) - Phil has to make two extra trips to the site. Advantages/Disadvantages of the Tent + Has roll-up sides so can adjust for warm/rainy weather + Larger size than trailer (10x20) + Less distracting cross-talk (especially with the sides rolled up - Tent is of unknown quality--never out of the box - In severe weather, especially wind, tent could be questionable - No air conditioning (have box fans) - Takes more time to set up - Will need to work around guy ropes -----Original Message----- From: Phil West [mailto:phil@...] Sent: Tuesday, June 24, 2003 8:03 AM To: Moss, Dave J (INPO) Subject: RE: FD Yes, Sat only. I am going to work on the trailer tonight (I am working to insulate the roof) and will wash the inside out. So far it looks like it may rain Saturday but it is predicted that it will let up by afternoon.. FYI. If we want to use the air, it will take a minimum of a 3000 watt generator to drive it. I do not own one that large yet. Will keep in touch. de N4NBL \At 05:55 PM 6/23/2003 -0400, you wrote: Are you planning to be out Saturday only?
