Gang:

I'm down to 4 computers for FD..Lost the PS in a Notebook tonight...but I
think we're still OK.

The way I figure it we need 9 computers.

I'm bringing 4 now.

AA4RC - 1

WB8VTK - 1

KE4ENI - 1

KT4XN - 1

NE4S - 1

WB6RTH - 1

Anyone I'm forgetting???

If this isn't correct, please discuss it and someone come up with a machine,
if that's possible.

KE4UW, KN6RO, and KT4XN are going to be off of email tomorrow due to set up
activities.

We should be on 2 meters most of the day.

Thanks!

All, attached is the Tentative Field Day schedule subject to major changes.
If your name is not listed its because I didn't have the times you would be

Just let me know what bands and hours you would like to work.

Tim,
I think the jack is a 1/8 mini type, Jim probably will have an adapter from
1/4 to 1/8 inch.
We will not be needing a programmable keyer, the PC does a real good job.
I will use whoever's paddles are connected...
Actually the whole FD can be run without paddles.

I am bringing my own paddles to use. Maybe somebody

I've also got my programmable keyer in the box. It

Jim Nail and I tested the CW station and computer

It all works fine. We also set up a set of

The paddle is also available operating on the radio

The only outstanding point was the serial interface
adapter, which I
think Tom was going to supply at setup.

We have not heard any comment from Tim, or Al, but
hope these

I will start and test the 4K generator today, and

I have about 100 feet of #14 type extension cord.
Not heavy enough

Has someone gotten any "dayglow" plastic marker tape

about both? Even guy one side of the tent onto the

I think it is all working.

Hi, All,

Hope the anticipation for Field Day is rising high amongst all of you. I
know that we're looking forward to it, and have an ambitious itinerary
planned out to visit 10 to 12 sites, time and weather permitting. (Let's
hope this nice weather lasts through the weekend.)Unfortunately, we
can't visit with all of you who so kindly issued an invitation (though
we appreciated the temptations you offered of those goodies like steak,
and blackened fish, and some of the "best chicken in the
southeast"....)We're gonna try to hit some new spots this year, so as
much as we wanted to, we couldn't do that and still make it to all of
the sites we visited last year, too....

Anyhow, since this year is the first year that we'll be attempting to
handle Field Day messages via packet, SCOTT HARTLAGE, KF4PWI, thought it
might be a good idea to do a little "practice" to check out the system.
And he was kind enough to share the log of that practice session to
benefit all of you who may be thinking about sending your message via
packet this year. Give it a try!! And many thanks to Scott and all of
the rest of the Gwinnett ARES folks who've volunteered their expertise
to accept these messages.

So there ya have it folks! It would be particularly cool if all of you
Class F operators sent a packet message. Which reminds me: If your group
is running a Class F operation this year, please let our esteemed SEC
MIKE BOATRIGHT, KO4WX, know about it. (ko4wx@...) And I think both
he and I would love to hear how your Class F operation went, after all
is said and done. An "after action report" if you will... something that
we can then send to HQ to give them our GA operators' opinion on the new
class.

Y'all take care. And have a fantastic Field Day!

hurricane-force winds. If the majority decides that this trailer
is needed
(due to weather) then I will have it on the grounds Friday Evening.
_______________________________

Here is a description of the trailer (as there have been a few
questions
pertaining to such):

The cargo area is about 17 feet long and 7 feet wide with the
forward-most
wall slanted inward. There is a door in this wall opening to the
living
quarters which is climate controlled and carpeted (I am working on
furnishing it). I am in the process of insulating the trailer -
front and
rear (should be completed this week). The cargo area has 3 large
windows on
one side and three smaller slide-style windows on the other. There
is a
side entrance into the living quarters and two doors in the rear.
For
events such as these I place carpet on the floor in the cargo area.
The
trailer is only a few months old and very clean. There is an
awning that
extends from the side and I usually place indoor-outdoor carpet
under this
awning. The trailer is fed by 110v (for the air conditioner and
lights) and
12V for lights and 'lighter' receptacles in the front (I have
rigged a
portable battery and cable to power this). I have pictures
available on
request.

Hey gang,

It's getting to be crunch time for making a decision on whether to
use
Phil's trailer (designed to be a big horse trailer) to contain 4
stations,
or to use the tent I got at the 'big tool sale" in Decatur a month
ago. We'll be using one or the other to contain the 40m phone, 10-
80
digital, 10/80 phone, and GOTA stations. It (they) will need to
be
located at the far end of the field near the copse of trees that
juts out
into the field.

Today's weather forecast is for sun Thursday, isolated
thunderstorms on
Friday, scattered thunderstorms on Saturday, and sunny on Sunday.
Doesn't
sound too bad, but if one of the "scattered" storms is a strong
one, we'll
have to be able to deal with it. It will be difficult at best,
likely
impossible, to move the stations from one shelter to the other in
the
middle of the contest and in the middle of a storm, so I think we
should
make a call and try to make that work, with some provisions for a
back-up
plan if appropriate.

So, I'd like your opinion on which shelter we should use. My
suggestion
would be to set up the tent on Thursday and get some read on
quality and
how well we can guy it. If the tent looks good, we can plan to
use
it. If it looks questionable, we can call Phil and he can bring
his
trailer Thursday or Friday evening. That could save Phil a bunch
of work
if he doesn't have to make a separate trip out to the site to drop
off and
later pick up the trailer (he's planning to be out Saturday
only). Sound
reasonable? Other options would be to go with the trailer and
forget the
tent, or maybe to have both and choose the best bet as late as
possible
when the weather is more certain.

I'd especially like to hear from WB8VTK and KN6RO (owners of two
of the
stations) and N4NBL (owner and shuttler of the trailer). We'll
discuss
and make a decision tonight on 147.105.

Advantages/Disadvantages of the trailer:
+ Much ore durable and weather-tight than the tent
+ Has some air conditioning capability (will need a fan to push
air from
front compartment to the back)
+ Has an awning that could be used for one of the stations
(weather-permitting)
- Will require another generator running essentially full-time
for the
air conditioning
- May be noisy with four stations calling in a fairly small box
(had some
problems with this in the past)
- Will be a tight squeeze with four stations inside--OK to
operate, but
tough to move around.
- Not real conducive to GOTA operation with inexperienced op and
a
"coach/mentor" (lot of conversations going on)
- Phil has to make two extra trips to the site.

Advantages/Disadvantages of the Tent
+ Has roll-up sides so can adjust for warm/rainy weather
+ Larger size than trailer (10x20)
+ Less distracting cross-talk (especially with the sides rolled up
- Tent is of unknown quality--never out of the box
- In severe weather, especially wind, tent could be questionable
- No air conditioning (have box fans)
- Takes more time to set up
- Will need to work around guy ropes

FYI. If we want to use the air, it will take a minimum of a 3000

Trailer info..

Phil West

I agree that the trailer will be noisy but will be cool in the summer with the air going and a small fan. I also agree that a tent will be a nicer setup and will allow for more (natural) air flow; as long as there are no hurricane-force winds.? If the majority decides that this trailer is needed (due to weather) then I will have it on the grounds Friday Evening.
_______________________________

Here is a description of the trailer (as there have been a few questions pertaining to such):

The cargo area is about 17 feet long and 7 feet wide with the forward-most wall slanted inward. There is a door in this wall opening to the living quarters which is climate controlled and carpeted (I am working on furnishing it).? I am in the process of insulating the trailer - front and rear (should be completed this week). The cargo area has 3 large windows on one side and three smaller slide-style windows on the other. There is a side entrance into the living quarters and two doors in the rear. For events such as these I place carpet on the floor in the cargo area. The trailer is only a few months old and very clean.? There is an awning that extends from the side and I usually place indoor-outdoor carpet under this awning. The trailer is fed by 110v (for the air conditioner and lights) and 12V for lights and 'lighter' receptacles in the front (I have rigged a portable battery and cable to power this). I have pictures available on request.

Hey gang,
?
It's getting to be crunch time for making a decision on whether to use Phil's trailer (designed to be a big horse trailer) to contain 4 stations, or to use the tent I got at the 'big tool sale" in Decatur a month ago.? We'll be using one or the other to contain the 40m phone, 10-80 digital, 10/80 phone, and GOTA stations.? It (they) will need to be located at the far end of the field near the copse of trees that juts out into the field.
?
Today's weather forecast is for sun Thursday, isolated thunderstorms on Friday, scattered thunderstorms on Saturday, and sunny on Sunday.? Doesn't sound too bad, but if one of the "scattered" storms is a strong one, we'll have to be able to deal with it.? It will be difficult at best, likely impossible, to move the stations from one shelter to the other in the middle of the contest and in the middle of a storm, so I think we should make a call and try to make that work, with some provisions for a back-up plan if appropriate.
?
So, I'd like your opinion on which shelter we should use.? My suggestion would be to set up the tent on Thursday and get some read on quality and how well we can guy it.? If the tent looks good, we can plan to use it.? If it looks questionable, we can call Phil and he can bring his trailer Thursday or Friday evening.? That could save Phil a bunch of work if he doesn't have to make a separate trip out to the site to drop off and later pick up the trailer (he's planning to be out Saturday only).? Sound reasonable?? Other options would be to go with the trailer and forget the tent, or maybe to have both and choose the best bet as late as possible when the weather is more certain.
?
I'd especially like to hear from WB8VTK and KN6RO (owners of two of the stations) and N4NBL (owner and shuttler of the trailer).? We'll discuss and make a decision tonight on 147.105.?
?
Advantages/Disadvantages of the trailer:
+ Much ore durable and weather-tight than the tent
+ Has some air conditioning capability (will need a fan to push air from front compartment to the back)
+ Has an awning that could be used for one of the stations (weather-permitting)
-? Will require another generator running essentially full-time for the air conditioning
-? May be noisy with four stations calling in a fairly small box (had some problems with this in the past)
-? Will be a tight squeeze with four stations inside--OK to operate, but tough to move around.
-? Not real conducive to GOTA operation with inexperienced op and a "coach/mentor" (lot of conversations going on)
-? Phil has to make two extra trips to the site.
?
Advantages/Disadvantages of the Tent
+? Has roll-up sides so can adjust for warm/rainy weather
+? Larger size than trailer (10x20)
+? Less distracting cross-talk (especially with the sides rolled up
-?? Tent is of unknown quality--never out of the box
-?? In severe weather, especially wind, tent could be questionable
-?? No air conditioning (have box fans)
-?? Takes more time to set up
-?? Will need to work around guy ropes

Yes, Sat only.? I am going to work on the trailer tonight (I am working to insulate the roof) and will wash the inside out. So far it looks like it may rain Saturday but it is predicted that it will let up by afternoon.. FYI. If we want to use the air, it will take a minimum of a 3000 watt generator to drive it. I do not own one that large yet.

Tent/trailer...

I like your idea of going with the tent first. ?Give it a good test Thu/Fri.? If it works, well, it works.

The trailer can be a backup....

Hey gang,
?
It's getting to be crunch time for making a decision on whether to use Phil's trailer (designed to be a big horse trailer) to contain 4 stations, or to use the tent I got at the 'big tool sale" in Decatur a month ago.? We'll be using one or the other?to contain the 40m phone, 10-80 digital, 10/80 phone, and GOTA stations.? It (they) will need to be?located at the far end of the field near the copse of trees that juts out into the field.
?
Today's weather forecast is for sun Thursday, isolated thunderstorms on Friday, scattered thunderstorms on Saturday, and sunny on Sunday.??Doesn't sound too bad, but if one of the "scattered" storms is a strong one, we'll have to be able to deal with it.? It will be difficult at best,?likely impossible, to move the stations from one?shelter to the other in the middle of?the contest and in the middle of a storm, so I think we should make a call and try to make that work, with some provisions for a?back-up plan if appropriate.
?
So, I'd like your?opinion on which shelter we should use.? My suggestion would be to set up the tent on?Thursday and get some read on quality and how well we can guy it.? If the tent looks good, we can plan to?use it.? If it looks questionable, we can call Phil and he can bring his trailer Thursday or Friday evening.? That could save Phil a bunch of work if he doesn't have to?make a separate trip out to the?site to drop off and later pick up the trailer (he's planning to be out Saturday only).?
-?? Takes more time to set up?
-?? Will need to work around guy ropes
?

Yes, Sat only.? I am going to work on the trailer tonight (I am working to insulate the roof) and will wash the inside out. So far it looks like it may rain Saturday but it is predicted that it will let up by afternoon.. FYI. If we want to use the air, it will take a minimum of a 3000 watt generator to drive it. I do not own one that large yet.

Will keep in touch.

Re: FW: FD

Mike Lee

I'd vote for the TENT...
the confinement of the trailer (metal, at that) will be VERY distracting for
4 operators...

I like your idea of setting-up the tent on Thursday... if at least adequate,
then go with it..
if not, then move-in the trailer..

I have 24-mile Radar on the bus, along with DirecTV for satellite broadcast
weather reports.
If weather looks to get questionable, we can always watch on Radar and take
appropriate action.

I've operated in near Typhoon conditions under a tent (with no dry shelter
around for the radios)... it CAN be done,
but it will require a number of guys (fellas) to hold-on to guy-ropes.

just my 2-cents...
