The park has a number of favorable things that are fairly comparable to the previous site at Mr. Fuller's farm, including relatively high ground with unobstructed views to the north and west (if we set up on the ridge), a lot of wide open grassy area to set up towers, and lots of tall trees for wire antennas. The new site also offers the following advantages over the previous site:
* Several covered pavilions with AC power, lights, and, in some cases, even ceiling fans! The pavilions are in a nice shady spot that will give some relief from the hot June sun
* A large restroom facility with hot and cold running water
* Lots of picnic benches that we can use for meals, assembling gear, etc (and maybe for a couple of operating positions)
* We can gather those last few bonus point categories for setting up in a public place, and having an info booth. We may also be able (through the PARC folks) to arrange visits by elected officials and served agencies, as we're only a mile and a half from downtown <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Dallas.
* There will be no need for tree-trimming or grass mowing the Saturday before Field Day! The only need the week before will be to finalize (and mark, if allowed) the specific location of towers, tents, generators, etc. Even this would be optional, but it would help to know exactly where everything was going as we begin setup on Thursday.
There is a nice open space on the top of a ridge at about 900ft elevation. Because the pavilions are down in a valley a few hundred feet away, we will probably need to set up most of the phone and CW stations in tents nearer the towers to avoid excessive runs of coax and rotor cables. We may be able to set up a couple stations in a pavilion--probably GOTA and digital--with some beams that may be shadowed a bit by another hill to the north. We should still be able to make several hundred contacts on each of those stations. VHF/UHF folks will probably want to set up near the top of the hill--there's a good place near the restroom building that offers high ground and hopefully a reasonable AC extension cord run to the generators.

There are a couple disadvantages. We will have a bit of a challenge in needing to limit access to the antenna farm. Since the park is reserved we should be able to block off areas or roads to vehicle traffic, and hopefully channel visitors to the GOTA station/info booth. With some yellow flagging and maybe some chemical lights we can mark the area off pretty well. We also will probably need to keep someone at the site the entire time (Thursday through Sunday) to watch over things--a couple of us may have to miss the Friday dinner.

So, weighing all this, our consensus was that we should move the Field Day operation to Paulding Meadows. It offers about the same capabilities in terms of radio operations, but adds a number of creature comforts that can go a long way to making this an even more enjoyable event!

Now is the time for everyone to weigh in! If you have strong feelings about either site, let the group know. If no objections are heard, we'll begin the process of adapting "the plan" to the new site.

Think Field Day!

N4N de KE4UW,

Several of us are planning to visit the Paulding Meadows park
Saturday afternoon to see how it would work as a site for this
year's N4N Field Day operation.? It has several advantages--
especially having covered pavilions, restrooms, and lights/AC
power.? We want to get a good idea of the layout and how we could
place up to 8 towers/yagis, and do it safely so passers-by don't get
tangled in the guys or extension cords.

I'll plan on being at the site at about 3:00pm.? I'll be on 147.105
on the trip out.? Maybe some of the PARC folks can recommend a good
repeater to meet on in Dallas.? My apologies, but I only saw a 220
repeater on the PARC web site, and I don't have 220 in the car.

Vester:

I've got the press releases handled. I have a friend that's an editor and
she helps us out with that every year. Hmmmm, CNN coverage this year????

We have to remember that repeater contacts are illegal during FD. The new
FD packet is available on the ARRL website.

All of the direct VHF/UHF contacts we can muster up is a good thing.

Great website!

Don't blame you on avoiding the 120 mile Round trip. Stay tuned for more on
the reflector.

I'm gonna skip this 120+ mile round trip today, trust whatever you
guys come up with, and save my gas money for the real thing.

Any plans for something like this?:

(Back off to and there's some other neat
stuff there, as well).

Also, is there any interest in making prior agreements with other
Field Day sites for both repeater communication and direct,
dedicated vhf or uhf simplex communication with them? It would show
visitors that we are coordinated, and ready to work together, even
if Osama takes out all of the repeaters. Maybe a VoIP demo would be
good, too, if possible.

I know we talked earlier about 900, and I'll make sure that happens.

Write up something in advance, invite the press, and you'll probably
see it in your local papers afterwards. And in the SERA Repeater
Journal, if repeaters are spotlighted.

Maybe public awareness/interest is just as (okay, ALMOST as
important as) points?

John,

We decided that we had two options for guy stakes. We could keep the
auger
type and assign that task to the Dekalb extension of N4N or we could use
fence stakes and run them in no time. We decided that in the interest of
watching out for the interests of this group (didn't want any medical
problems) we will use the green fence stakes for the 48 hour guy
anchors.
Drive one in the ground about 3 - 4' and we shouldn't have a problem.

Eric

Dave / Eric:

I have got hold of 20 of the green fence posts that we talked about
during
the planning session. I also have the driver.

My brother and I tested yesterday. You can drive one all the way in
in
less
than 2 minutes and believe me...they are not easily coming out!

Should speed things up immensely!

Yep, it's a cross between efficiency and laziness, with some safety
margin built in as well. Sounds like it works well, and should speed up
the tower erection a good bit. I'll have the auger stakes, so if there
is any question of adequacy, we can drive them as well. We should at
least be able to take anchor-driving off the critical path.
