N4N de KE4UW,

Several of us are planning to visit the Paulding Meadows park
Saturday afternoon to see how it would work as a site for this
year's N4N Field Day operation.? It has several advantages--
especially having covered pavilions, restrooms, and lights/AC
power.? We want to get a good idea of the layout and how we could
place up to 8 towers/yagis, and do it safely so passers-by don't get
tangled in the guys or extension cords.

I'll plan on being at the site at about 3:00pm.? I'll be on 147.105
on the trip out.? Maybe some of the PARC folks can recommend a good
repeater to meet on in Dallas.? My apologies, but I only saw a 220
repeater on the PARC web site, and I don't have 220 in the car.

John,

We decided that we had two options for guy stakes. We could keep the
auger
type and assign that task to the Dekalb extension of N4N or we could use
fence stakes and run them in no time. We decided that in the interest of
watching out for the interests of this group (didn't want any medical
problems) we will use the green fence stakes for the 48 hour guy
anchors.
Drive one in the ground about 3 - 4' and we shouldn't have a problem.

Yep, it's a cross between efficiency and laziness, with some safety
margin built in as well. Sounds like it works well, and should speed up
the tower erection a good bit. I'll have the auger stakes, so if there
is any question of adequacy, we can drive them as well. We should at
least be able to take anchor-driving off the critical path.

Power Calculations

Roger Hackler

Gang:

I just ran some power / Wire Size Calculations as we discussed last evening.

I think we were right on with our SWAG that #8 AWG wire is the key to
success.

The calcs work out like this:

Assuming a total circuit length of 100 feet (from the generator to the JB at
the tent) and assuming a current of 40 Amps (120 v * 40 A = 4.8Kw):

Using #8 AWG the voltage drop would be about 3 Volts - Giving us 117 VAC at
the JB.

Using #10 AWG the voltage drop would be about 4.8 Volts - Giving us 115.2
VAC at the JB

Using #12 AWG the voltage drop would be about 7.7 Volts - Giving us 112.3 at
the JB

And then you have the losses in the tent. I think that we need to go with
#8 AWG!

By the way, if the current demands are less, the numbers improve, but I
think we need to plan on worst case.

Subject: [n4n_field_day] Mark Your Calendars--Field Day 2004!

Hey gang,
Time to mark your calendars! Once again, we plan to activate special
event station N4N for Field Day 2004! The operation will be from the
same site, a wonderful spot on a 200 acre farm in Paulding County with
wide open pastures for towers and beams, surrounded by tall trees just
right for the wire antennas! This year's event will, as always, be the
fourth full weekend in June--June 26-27th.
Last year we added a couple more beams, and some serious-business CW
operators, and we topped 3300 contacts with a 6A operation! We had a
ton of fun, and wound up number 20 overall, third in the Southeast, and
Number 1 in Georgia! This year, the plan is to grow a bit and shoot
for top 5 overall.
We have several more yagis, rotors, tower parts, and radios, so we've
got enough equipment lined up to grow the effort to 8A, with four
stations on HF phone, 3 stations on HF CW, and one HF digital station.
We'll also be set up for the Get-On-The-Air (GOTA) station, satellite
station, and VHF/UHF station. Like last year, we'll operate in the
150W category, with computer logging using Writelog with networked
computers. Camp setup will begin on Thursday, and antenna/station
setup will begin 2:00pm Friday. If the propagation gods smile on 10
and 15 meters, we should be able to make 4500 QSOs!
The most important need is for operators--YOU! We can add or delete
stations to get a good match between operators and stations (maybe one
station for every two full-time operators), but before we can make the
fine-tuning adjustments to the plan, we need a pretty good idea how
many folks are interested. So, please let me know what your current
plans are for this year's Field Day:
1. I'm in! Sign me up as a full-time participant.
2. I'm interested and will be there part time, but not the whole
weekend.
3. I probably won't participate, but I'd like to see the email traffic
and may join in later.
4. I won't be making it this year.
We're still cruising the hamfest boneyards for a few odds and ends to
fine-tune the setup. If you are interested in participating and have
any of the following that could be available to the group for field
day, please let me know so we can put our pennies where they count the
most:
Rohn 25 flat or hinged base
Rohn 25 top section (we use 20 or 30 foot towers)
Bandpass filters for HF (so we don't interfere with each other)
Vertical antenna that covers 80m (possible use on CW)
Coax cable-especially long pieces
Folding tables (like banquet tables) and comfortable portable chairs
for operators
Tents/shelters large enough and strong enough to house operating
positions (we have the 10x20 white tent from last year and new 12x14
screen tent, plus the RV)
Comfortable portable chairs for operators
Also, if you know of any others who may be interested in participating,
invite them to join the yahoo group, or let me know and I'll be glad to
add them to the email list.
Think Field Day!

Hey gang,

wide open pastures for towers and beams, surrounded by tall trees just

Last year we added a couple more beams, and some serious-business CW

ton of fun, and wound up number 20 overall, third in the Southeast, and
Number 1 in Georgia! This year, the plan is to grow a bit and shoot

This year, the plan is to grow a bit and shoot for
top 5 overall.
Like last year, we'll operate in the 150W
category, with computer logging using Writelog with networked computers.
Camp setup will begin on Thursday, and antenna/station setup will begin
2:00pm Friday. If the propagation gods smile on 10 and 15 meters, we
should be able to make 4500 QSOs!
The most important need is for operators--YOU! We can add or delete
stations to get a good match between operators and stations (maybe one
station for every two full-time operators), but before we can make the
fine-tuning adjustments to the plan, we need a pretty good idea how many
folks are interested. So, please let me know what your current plans
are for this year's Field Day:
If you are interested in participating and have any
of the following that could be available to the group for field day,
please let me know so we can put our pennies where they count the most:
* Rohn 25 flat or hinged base
* Rohn 25 top section (we use 20 or 30 foot towers)
* Bandpass filters for HF (so we don't interfere with each
other)
* Vertical antenna that covers 80m (possible use on CW)
* Coax cable-especially long pieces
* Folding tables (like banquet tables) and comfortable portable
chairs for operators
* Tents/shelters large enough and strong enough to house
operating positions (we have the 10x20 white tent from last year and new
12x14 screen tent, plus the RV)
* Comfortable portable chairs for operators
Also, if you know of any others who may be interested in participating,
invite them to join the yahoo group, or let me know and I'll be glad to
add them to the email list.
Think Field Day!
