FD vote

ne4s

Hi gang,
I voted for "go for it"
although I cannot be here to participate.\
Joan and I will head for CO early May next year.
Perhaps we can get a catchy call like K0W, N0T, or N0N and fire up
from CO.

I think we/you have a momentum going, and next year may be the time
to go for broke.

If you have the gear, get the people.
Get more 6 cw ops and you will kill them.
Jim, Tim, and I did a pretty good job on CW, but 3 to 8 more would
insure that you keep the brass pounding on all the open bands at the
same time as Phone is cranking.

All level of CW skills can play....

Great job last year, big kudos to the organizers.

By the way, South East Contest Club is looking for more members.
Those who do any level of contesting is encouraged to join and
pariticipate in what may is the best club in the area for contest and
event activity. I mention this because even casual contest
participation can be contributed to a "club" score, and all are
welcome. Folks who are semi-serious about Field Day may also want to
check SECC out.

See:

and find the membership page.

And....
Best of Holiday wishes to all,
Mike, And Joan,
NE4S, K9EGA

One other consideration. The Atlanta Radio Club is considering a field
day effort. Would we be interested in a joint activity?

Enter your vote today! A new poll has been created for the
n4n_field_day group:

What are your feelings about the level
of effort we should have for Field Day
2004? Equipment isn't an issue--we
have shelters, antennas, towers,
rotors, computers, and radios for
anything up to 9A. Just a question of
level of effort and recruiting.

o Lets go for broke. Recruit some CW operators, grow the effort to 8A
or 9A, and shoot for "top 5" overall.
o My preference would be to keep the size of the operation the same as
last year, but I'd still participate if we grow it or shrink it a bit.
o I'd like to keep the effort the same size and am not really
interested in participating if we grow it or shrink it.
o I'd prefer to reduce the operation to 4A or 3A, but would still
participate in a larger effort.
o Not really interested in participating in 2004.

Hey gang,

Well, the results are in! This time last year we set the goals for
FD2003, and we decided to shoot for 3000 QSOs and 10,000 points--a
target that, based on last year's scores would have gotten us just into
the top 50. We met our QSO and point goals--in fact beat them by 10% or
so. I guess scores are down a bit overall (I'm sure having 10 and 15
meters dead as a tire iron had a lot to do with that), but it's nice to
see that we made it to the top 20, not just the top 50! Number 3 in the
6A class, and Number 1 in Georgia! Wow!

Not bad for an effort that started the Friday before FD 2001 with three
people, one little tent, a beam Roger bought that day, and whatever we
could find to pack in the truck that Friday afternoon. A fun time and a
respectable effort--969 QSOs and all but two sections worked. We
learned a lot that year--useful things like we're getting too old for
all-nighters. And the effort grew.

FD 2002 was a bit better. Added two more beams and a dozen more people,
plus a Taj Majal RV for headquarters. What a difference! Lots of gear,
lots of people (15 now), lots of fun, and 1484 QSOs. Still missed two
sections, but this time it was Yukon and Newfoundland instead of Yukon
and North Dakota. We made WAS in a weekend! Not bad. We added digital
for the first time, a VHF/UHF station, and a GOTA station. We even
started adding up some bonus points. We learned better ways to mount
and raise the beams (mostly by OJT). Wow, if we had only done some
planning. . . and had a few more folks, and a few more radios, and a
little bit more of everything! And the effort grew.

FD 2003 added a PLAN (novel idea!), a couple big tents, another RV, more
beams, more generators, more operators (a crowd of 25), a serious CW
effort, and our first ever satellite station! 3309 QSOs! Wow, this
planning stuff really works!

Now we're running with the big dogs, and we hadn't really planned to be
there quite yet! Guess it's time to be thinking about what we want to
do in 2004. We're not really limited much by availability of
equipment--we have enough radios and beams to go to 9A and still have a
beam for everything on 6/10/15/20. Only real question is how big of an
effort do we want to stage? Should be shrink this back to 4A? Stay at
6A? Grow to 8A or 9A? How about 51A? (Do you think those folks really
had separate phone, CW, and digital stations on 17 bands?) Do we want
to keep about the same number of folks (25 or so), or shall we add
another 10 or so? Shall we continue to make this a Thursday through
Sunday affair, or keep it to the weekend only? Is top 20 OK, or do we
shoot for top 10? Top 5?

Think about it, and sometime around Christmas we'll put our heads
together and come up with a plan. In the meantime, I'm gonna take
another look at the FD2003 photos on yahoo and re-live it a bit. Can't
wait to see the picture of Tim doing the propagation dance on Main
Street, N4N!

Congrats and thanks again to all who participated! Think Field Day!

Dave

Stargazing!

Jim Nail

Everyone in our group had a wonderful time last evening. We saw
Mars with the South Polar white cap. I think the image I looked at
was inverted (white cap at about 11:30). Anyway when Trevor asked a
slew of questions about stars and space I knew he was intrigued.
The best one I explained was that a telescope is really a time
machine! That one really got him thinking...

Thanks Nancy for the invite. New Christmas presents for looking
skyward are in the works!

Hi Everyone,

Beginning at 4 PM on Saturday, we will have a Villa Rica Observatory Talk-In on 146.52.

Art Russell, KG4VTY, will have an IC-706 in his Jeep and a handheld with him.
I'll also have an HT on me (KG4IUL).

Once we start getting folks on site, we would appreciate it if others would help monitor the talk-in. Art is giving one of the presentations and won't be available to monitor after dusk. Thanks for your help.
