Hey gang,

Well, the results are in! This time last year we set the goals for
FD2003, and we decided to shoot for 3000 QSOs and 10,000 points--a
target that, based on last year's scores would have gotten us just into
the top 50. We met our QSO and point goals--in fact beat them by 10% or
so. I guess scores are down a bit overall (I'm sure having 10 and 15
meters dead as a tire iron had a lot to do with that), but it's nice to
see that we made it to the top 20, not just the top 50! Number 3 in the
6A class, and Number 1 in Georgia! Wow!

Not bad for an effort that started the Friday before FD 2001 with three
people, one little tent, a beam Roger bought that day, and whatever we
could find to pack in the truck that Friday afternoon. A fun time and a
respectable effort--969 QSOs and all but two sections worked. We
learned a lot that year--useful things like we're getting too old for
all-nighters. And the effort grew.

FD 2002 was a bit better. Added two more beams and a dozen more people,
plus a Taj Majal RV for headquarters. What a difference! Lots of gear,
lots of people (15 now), lots of fun, and 1484 QSOs. Still missed two
sections, but this time it was Yukon and Newfoundland instead of Yukon
and North Dakota. We made WAS in a weekend! Not bad. We added digital
for the first time, a VHF/UHF station, and a GOTA station. We even
started adding up some bonus points. We learned better ways to mount
and raise the beams (mostly by OJT). Wow, if we had only done some
planning. . . and had a few more folks, and a few more radios, and a
little bit more of everything! And the effort grew.

FD 2003 added a PLAN (novel idea!), a couple big tents, another RV, more
beams, more generators, more operators (a crowd of 25), a serious CW
effort, and our first ever satellite station! 3309 QSOs! Wow, this
planning stuff really works!

Now we're running with the big dogs, and we hadn't really planned to be
there quite yet! Guess it's time to be thinking about what we want to
do in 2004. We're not really limited much by availability of
equipment--we have enough radios and beams to go to 9A and still have a
beam for everything on 6/10/15/20. Only real question is how big of an
effort do we want to stage? Should be shrink this back to 4A? Stay at
6A? Grow to 8A or 9A? How about 51A? (Do you think those folks really
had separate phone, CW, and digital stations on 17 bands?) Do we want
to keep about the same number of folks (25 or so), or shall we add
another 10 or so? Shall we continue to make this a Thursday through
Sunday affair, or keep it to the weekend only? Is top 20 OK, or do we
shoot for top 10? Top 5?

Think about it, and sometime around Christmas we'll put our heads
together and come up with a plan. In the meantime, I'm gonna take
another look at the FD2003 photos on yahoo and re-live it a bit. Can't
wait to see the picture of Tim doing the propagation dance on Main
Street, N4N!

Congrats and thanks again to all who participated! Think Field Day!

Dave
