Remember to use only channel 11 to avoid problems with AO-40 on
2.4.? Too bad we aren't using 802.11a.

Sounds cool.? We'll use 192.169.1.x /24?? Put the APs
high (above 200 and I'll keep the wired stuff low).
?
If
we can get internet access on the network, we can set up Writelog to connect
to the cluster via the net, and have spots on each logging machine filtered
per band.? Since we're planning to call CQ, this isn't any big deal,
until the last 4 or 5 hours, then it could be very useful for grabbing any
missed multipliers!
I will bring 802.11b
APs and Gain antennas.
We will set up on the same subnet as the
wired nework.
SSID will set to N4N and we will not run security for
this event. Channel will set away from the SAT freq to avoid
interference. Any software that scans channels should not be used (ie
NetStumber) as it could interfer with the SAT station.
This
should make it easy for and WIFI compatible 802.11b device to join the
network.

OK by me.
But that shouldn't mean much as I have no earthly idea what any of this means except that you are bringing some high-tech stuff, and it won't interfere with the satellite station.

440 Yagi for FD SAT station...
Jeff - Is it circularly polarized...or a long-boom 440 Yagi?
FYI: Here's the kind of SAT antenna array I believe Robin, AA4RC is trying to duplicate (would like to have) for FD:
ray.JPG
My understanding is Robin's SAT array consists of: - VHF: M2 circularly polarized 2M long-boom Yagi - UHF: M2 curcularly polarized 440 long-boom Yagi - 2.4 GHz: BBQ dish + very low noise 2.4 GHz downconverter (TranSystem, Inc.) - rotor: Yaesu G-5500 Az/El with fiberglass boom - rotor interface: SASI tracker - tracking program: NOVA for Window/SASI tracker - low-loss feedline - Military surplus "crank up" and rotatable mast - Rig: Kenwood TS-200X (Robin, did I get it all right?)
BTW: Here is a picture of Robin, AA4RC "working the birds":

A brief comment on fire extinguishers...
Regardig the fire extinguishers... "Dry Chemical", AKA "PKP" (Purple K Powder) is for Class A, B fires ("leaves and ash", and "burning liquids"). CO2 is compressed Carbon Dioxide gas and leaves the characteristic "frost" when deployed. A good CO2 extinguisher will work on A, B and Class C ("elecrical") fires.
PKP and CO2 extinguishers put out the fire the same way, by "smothering" or removing the Oxygen. The difference is that PKP is reasonably corrosive -- especially when wet and in contact with electrical/electronic equipment. We could actually make use of both kinds for FD -- the CO2 for any radio gear/power supply-related issues and the PKP for any (higher probability) generator/automobile-related fires. As Hams, I think we could handle the relatively rare electrical fire easily -- turn off the power, etc. But the "burning liquid" gasoline, etc fire can get out of control very F-A-S-T. So, if we only have one, let's go with the PKP...near the generators, etc! 73 de JG Think FD! -------Original Message------- From: Tim Lemmon <tim_lemmon@...> Sent: 06/18/03 10:53 PM To: n4n_field_day@... And I would like to look over everybody's shoulder at some time to see how this satellite stuff works. My goals for Field Day include learning how to operate through the satellites(Elmer is Robin), learning how to pass messages on the ARRL circuit (Elmer is KF4JVD), and learning how PSK-31 works (Elmer is KN6RO).

yes.. possibly... wouldl like to see Robin operate with his dish and compare it to mine with the UEK-3000 I installed all of the optional filters, TCXO and DSP units, along with the 1.2ghz unit last week.. seems to test just fine..

The plan is for Robin AA4RC to have a satellite station and he hopes to make QSOs by the dozen, not just one for the bonus points. Haven't heard from Robin in a while, but as far as I know, he'll be there with the satellite setup.

Hey gang! We've got several things in the mill for Field Day that require some information on who will be at the site when. We want to put together a schedule for operators (based on requests from last year), but we also need to find out: (1) if we will have the critical mass we need for putting up towers on Friday evening/Saturday morning and taking towers down on Sunday; (2) How many we will have on-site from about 12:00-2:00pm Saturday for the (weather-permitting) first ever N4N kick-off barbecue; (3) How many we will have for dinner Saturday and lunch Sunday. So, if you could, please let me know as soon as you can when you plan to be at the site. Bring along a friend, the XYL, or the kids if you'd like (let us know so we'll have food). Any extra help we can get for Friday evening or Sunday afternoon would really be great! To give you an idea of what's going on here's a basic schedule: 9:00am Thursday: Arrive at site and begin setup of RV, tents, tables/chairs, computer network, generators and AC distribution, and basically everything but stations and antennas (KE4UW, KN6RO, and KT4XN so far) Thursday evening: Relax and enjoy a cool one Friday morning: Continue setup of camp as needed, test computer network, etc Friday 2:00pm: Begin assembly of antennas and towers, hang wire antennas, setup stations, test rig/computer interfaces, etc. Friday evening: Raise as many towers as possible (need at least 8 people to do this safely), copy ARRL bulletin, dinner at the catfish restaurant in Hiram. Saturday morning: Complete any station setup or tower erection, test for interference among stations (if not done Friday), troubleshoot any problems Saturday noon: Picnic lunch (weather permitting), brief indoctrination for operators, primer on Writelog. Saturday 2:00pm: Field Day operation begins! Saturday evening: Pizza dinner (delivery, if possible) Sunday 2:00 pm: Field Day operation ceases. Barbecue lunch and gathering of good ideas for next year. Sunday 2:30 pm: Dissambly of antennas and towers, packing and cleanup So, choose your activities, arrange the hall passes, and please let me know as soon as possible when you plan to be there. If you have preference for bands/modes you do or don't want to operate, let me know that and we'll accommodate those as well. Think Field Day! Dave KE4UW
