SEA-235 support
Howard,
I am trying to make my SEA-235 radio work easier with digital modes. It is a marine receiver, follows very closely the nmea marine format but it has some differences, such as a different way to calculate the checksum and a more extensive command set. Would be interested to help with integration in HRI? Just to give you an idea where I am in the process, for Winlink, I created a python file that takes the Icom marine commands, replaces them with SEA commangs, recalculates the checksum, then outputs to SEA. The reverse for the status information. It works and it is neat but still a pain. For FLdigi, I started with the conversion of the IC802 command set but the Hamlib implementation is buggy and it breaks down. Next I took a stable Hamlib driver for a Kenwood amateur radio and translated that using python scripts. It is still a pain because amateur radios have a different approach to marine radios. For example, I have four AGC settings that I like to use on my radio, Kenwood supports only two and they are not like for like. I have a full description the the command set. What do you think? Regards, Vassil? |
Communicating ICOM IC-M710 with PC thru N3ZH
Aiko Love del Rosario
I just started tinkering with M710 and tried connecting it via RS232 cable to a laptop with RS232 connection. I changed the setting according to the manual and pressed start. It would start running and transmitting but there is no response. How can I know if the radio is actually transmitting/ "talking" to the PC?
Did someone try using M710 with N3ZH? Can you guys walk me through it? |

Re: new VISUAL HRI on 32 bit WIN7

Re: MT63 Testing
good day gentleman a friend of my is daris region manager. DARIS does use software modems.? backbone however is indeed packtor 2 and 3 modus via modem.? they are of the opinion that hardware is expensive, and therefor will not ask there members to buy such modem, and are waiting for winlink to roll out the ARDOP software.? ![]() |

Thank you for your comment. I know it is a problem in Europe to have a proper keyboard to keyboard communication chat.?
Most Radio?amateurs make only short contacts through Digital modes like?JT65A or FT8. I think the reason for this are the poor band conditions.
PSK31 was very popular, until last year when FT8 took over.
Its nowadays possible to chat with amateurs in Europe, but most chats use PSK31, and if conditions are really bad,?
Olivia 4/125 , Olivia 16/500 , or DominoEx8?is being used. I personally?use HRI which has native support for?Ham Radio de Luxe`s? DM780
Olivia and DominoEX? however are very slow modes compared to MT63
So that leaves us to EMCOM. But what I hear and see from the DARES ( Dutch Amateur Radio?Emergency Service)?organisation,?
that they use Winlink with the proprietary SCS Pactor II/III?modems, with primair?VHF and UHF frequencies, and HF NVIS frequencies?as backup
Its possible to use Winlink with the Winmor or UZ7HO Packet modem? on the Icom IC-M710, because John Wiseman has made rigcontrol support for the IC-M710 in his BPQ32 node switch software, but I doubt if DARES uses anything but the SCS modems
Another way to communicate is to use PC-ALE, but I?have problems with the Icom IC-M710 &?soundcard options in the latest versions
v1.08 Build 1.0.0.0 Beta TEST BUILD #3.3 and?TEST BUILD #3.4.?
The good news is that I?have tested the (software)?MS-DMT ( it has support for?MIL-STD/STANAG) modem from N2CKH, on the Icom IC-M710 but this modem is being used for MARS communication
purposes, and not intended for Radio amateur use

There was a time when MT63 was quite common on the amateur bands. I made many contacts just above 14.100 using MT63 500L, 1000L, and 2000L.? MT63 is a very robust mode and is the fallback for MARS and other organizations, whose primary mode
is M110A. MT63 is absolutely legal on the amateur bands for those with doubts. I am saddened that MT63 has all but disappeared from the ham bands. It is far superior and robust as compared to some still in use by amateurs.? MT63, in my opinion, is exceptionally
good for keyboard to keyboard communication as well as EMCOM. I wish we could promote MT63 on the amateur bands. I would be very pleased to get back on that mode if there was some regular? activity. As always, I suggest keeping RXID & TXID turned on to allow
others to switch to our mode/speed.
Best regards,

Re: MT63 Testing
Rene,
I generally recommend "Left" rather than "Stereo" unless you need Stereo for some reason. MT63 is popular with FEMA SHARES. It used to be popular in MARS, and I believe in a real emergency MARS might see a need to fallback to MT63 with StationMgr. I am not sure if MT63 is used very much by the general amateur radio community. Howard |

Soundcard options and right/left channel options are at the bottom of the "digital mode" window.

Re: MT63 Testing
Hi Howard,
I tested the updated Java version from 21Nov.? The Icom TX problem has been fixed, because when I Choose Digital modes, Full Test, the Icom goes into TX, so that has been fixed. But I have an interface with an external USB soundcard, and it seems that the audio signal routes to the default (internal) sound card. Is it possible to add an option to choose the soundcard? 73, Rene, PA7R |

Rene,
You are right, I am not sending PTT CAT commands to Icom Marine Radios. I'll get a new version made later today and post it at /g/N3ZHSoftware/files Regards, Howard |
