Re: Intro etc.
wow, that picture is still around! I had machined those plates as a shield for the board. I haven't opened mine in a while, but that's the attenuator board, right? I remember I used either the wrong driver or wrong LED, but the board worked, just no fancy numbers. I have quite a few scalar units including an HP MMS, R&S FSB with the tracking generator, 8568b with tracking and an Avantest analyzer with TG. I also have one of those NWT boards that worked very well. Oh, and a nanovna. But within its frequency range, I always grab my N2PK. I have my 2nd board about half populated. That's the one I wanted to change the oscillator and also figure out a way to integrate a different DDS. Sometime in the future I'll get it running.
Thank for scaring up the picture. Jerry |
Re: Intro etc.
I prefer the N2PK and the MyVNA combo.? Straight forward and no Windows device nonsense to deal with.? Also the author of MyVNA and I must have the same brain design because I find that program to be totally intuitive.? Plus the SFDR is simply fantastic by comparison.? Love them love them love them.

The VNWA is a nice box and I have one of those as well.? Small and portable but I find the interface hard to understand and don't use it often enough to keep my memory sharp.? It's more capable in some respects so I'm not criticizing it. And every N2PK that comes into existence should be celebrated. They are increasingly rare beasties.? Good job and congratulations on the build. 73/jeff/ac0c alpha-charlie-zero-charlie www.ac0c.com On 1/25/2024 3:39 PM, Kerry via groups.io wrote:

G'day, Jerry.
Nice to hear from another N2PK user. Your instrument looks very good; [img][/img] I have a VNWA as well, but I still use my N2PK occasionally; it can provide a "sanity check" if a VNWA measurement gives unexpected results, although I know that " ... a man with two watches is never sure of the correct time". :) I use myVNA; I like it and I think that using it is a tribute to Dave and the work that he put into it. The N2PK may also be operated with the VNWA program written by Tom DG8SAQ; see here; See page 36 of the VNWA Help file (available from the above link). Kerry VK2TIL. |
Intro etc.
Hi, I built my first N2PK VNA years ago. It was right around the time V5 came out. Paul was very helpful back then. I didn't realize it at the time but there was a close link in MyVNA with the N2PK VNA and the MSA. I have a complete set of MSA boards, nice from Osh in purple that someday I might get around to building, but seeing that I have about 5 spectrum analyzers, heck maybe 10, I doubt I'll ever do it.
Anyway, I haven't used my VNA in a while and thought I would take a look at a problem I have with a Dual Mixer Time Difference board. So last night when I couldn't get the driver to install, I thought I would check the group and post here. In the meantime, though, I found another set of USB install code and drivers (just the drivers, actually) and up it came on Win10. I used the code for the MSA, downloaded from . I just pointed the device manager at that directory and it loaded right up. I had tried previously changing the .inf files to match the device ID, but no luck. So my much loved N2PK VNA is up. By the way, I started building a second VNA long ago and was using a much better clock that I had purchased, I think I bought like 20 of them on discount. The clock had a much tighter spec. I also wanted to use a better DDS chip and had kicked around the idea of tracing the commands and using like a 14bit AD9910 or an AD9954 quadrature DDS. This 2nd VNA never saw power but seeing how well the first one works after all these years, heck, I might just go finish it. I wonder if my VNA pictures made the transition from the old group. I'll load them up if I get a minute. I had machine engraved the front panel. Hope all is well. Jerry also known as CNCJerry |

I did test the website provided but it is largely vacant. I will email Dave at the Contact address. I would likel consider an Elrasoft board if I can determine which board is relevant noting the DB-25 adaption would still likely be required. Thanks for the build notes and test method. Re: Parallel port to USB Advice on Options to adapt
G'day to all.
As I said earlier, I have a substantial file on the USB adaptor; it's my habit to collect information on a project before beginning it and I don't throw the information away after completion. I couldn't work-out how to put this information in the Group's Files section so I have attached it here as a .zip file. I hope that works; I'm decidedly computer-illiterate and, as the A said to the B, I've never done this before. :) Kerry VK2TIL. |

This is the document that I used to assembly Dave's G8KBB USB board a long time ago. Dave was quietly selling extra PCB boards. In the process of debugging the parallel port interface Paul N2PK had written a DOS program to twiddle the port bits, I recommend that you find of copy of this program to validate the port bits toggle and and the USB I/F is functional... I am still using Paul's single detector board with Dave's USB board. Note, there were some pin reassignments for Makarov's dual detector single board layout, ignore this if you are his boards. I could be proded to look further for Paul's bite toggling program. ;-) Glad to see this group come active again. Re: Parallel port to USB Advice on Options to adapt
I'm delighted to see some traffic here. :)
I used an adaptor designed by Dave Brainerd WB6DHW that he sold as a parts kit; that was many years ago but he may still have the PCB and parts. Try; It, and the N2PK VNA, still work flawlessly. Apropos XP & Win 11, I found when I began with the N2PK VNA that a laptop occupied too much bench space so I bought a little 10" netbook with the XP that was then current. It is still working perfectly with Dave's myVNA for the N2PK and Tom's VNWA for that instrument; "number-crunching" doesn't require the power of today's computers. I have recently been forced by computer failures to buy a laptop and a desktop with, of course, Win 11; I hate it, XP is much simpler and more-intuitive for such tasks as saving files. I like my little XP netbook so much that I recently bought an almost-identical second-hand one; it appears to have been little-used and looked-after in its ca.15-year life, it even has the original box and documentation! I have loaded myVNA and VNWA into it and am keeping it as a spare in case the first netbook expires. Kerry VK2TIL. |
