Sticky Change to MichoacanNet -- End to Moderator-approved Messages 6
Dear list member, Since the onset of Covid, MichoacanNet has been a moderated list, meaning each message from a member must be approved by one of the moderators. This has pros and cons: Pros: Clearly personal messages intended as a private reply but sent to the list by accident are intercepted and blocked Messages unrelated to Michoacan's mission or violating the list policies are rejected Libelous or vicious speech gets blocked Dangerous misinformation is not spread Cons: It's a lot of work for the moderators. When traveling, they have to consult their phones checking for new messages needing approval Spontaneity is lost when it takes hours to post a response Unintended personal messages sent by mistake will appear Nasty and inappropriate speech will appear On balance, David and Mark feel it's time to stop playing policemen and rely on you, our valued members, to message responsibly. Before hitting Send on a message, please consider these points: Is it true? Is it helpful? Is it kind? Does it need to be said? If it's none of those, or if it's just noise, maybe consider not sending. David's overriding message of "Just Be Nice" is still relevant. About one-third of the membership receives individual emails, so when you hit send, it goes out immediately and there's no way of "un-sending" it. The message is also in the list archive for all to read. The message is "owned" by you, the author, so you can always log in to /g/MichoacanNet/ and edit or delete your message there. If making a minor edit, like grammar, consider not re-sending it to the list, but instead edit it and use "Save Without Sending" rather than "Save And Send To Group" so those who read the list online will see the corrected version, and those who receive individual emails are spared a near-duplicate message. For those who abuse the privilege, there will be cautions and ultimately removal from the list. For those who are flagrantly abusive, there will be no cautions, just immediate removal and banishment. Rules about frequency of commercial posts remain. Ditto for no politics. MichoacanNet is primarily to support the arts, and secondary, the art of living in M¨¦xico. News of current blockades and security actions are important for everyone's safety. Gossip about some security event that happened days ago is not actionable and not helpful. There are numerous online sources for the "red pages" that focus on violence. A note on the transition: Depending on settings, it's possible that your first or second message after this change will still require approval. That's a holdover from the continuing policy that new members always require approval for their first few messages to protect the list from spambots that join automatically, then send spam. If this doesn't work well, what are the options? Go back to moderation? Banish all those who can't follow rules? Find others to take over the list, maintain it, and pay groups.io's monthly fee? Shut down MichoacanNet? We hope none of these options are necessary and that all are respectful of the great community that's been created here. Thanks for your continued support of MichoacanNet. David and Mark

Sticky Finding things on MichoacanNet 2
This seems to come up enough to warrant a separate post. And maybe make it sticky so it sits at the top of the messages, like the one about how to add a signature line. I'm am copying some of this from my friend Barbara Lynn who uses it on a different Groups.io forum that I belong to. It's come up a few times on how to get to the Files area, how to get to the Photos area, etc Our group is more than just an email message list. It's a whole website of information created and added to for many years. Our move from yahoo to the groups.io platform did not change our content. It's all still there for you to search and explore. First you need to log in to the www.groups.io website with your username and password. A list of your groups pops up to choose which one you want to visit. Click on the MichoacanNet group. Once inside the group, there is a long menu of items on the left hand side of all the information and items we have available. You can view and search old messages by clicking on Messages. You can start a New Topic by clicking on that choice. There's a Calendar to add events to, Photos and Files, all of which have valuable and helpful information. The Databases, Wiki, and New Poll choices are not currently used. Clicking on Files, you'll see information further organized into folders, like Art and Culture, or Professional Services (Doctors, Vets, Lawyers, etc.). A lot of the information is old, but some, like my doctor's list, I try to update once or twice a year. If others have informative files of information to contribute (not advertising please!), the group becomes more valuable. Anyone can upload files or photos. I encourage you to log in and explore the information. Save the website in your favorites, place it on your desktop or however you save websites so it's easy for you to find. When you're sharing information with others, it may be helpful to create a document or a photo album. You can upload photos and put descriptions with each photo in the album. It'll be easier to find than having that important information buried in conversations. Creating a PDF file and uploading it to the appropriate folder makes information easy to find and print out. Have a list of handymen and repair people that you use? Why not put it in a file and upload it, making a new folder if you don't see an appropriate category for it? It works best on a computer, but you can use phones and tablets - they just have a smaller interface and different layout than I described here. I'm not sure if there are limitations on uploading on those devices, but access to the information should work. If you can't get somewhere on your mobile device, then log in on a computer and you'll find it. Anyways, I hope this helps give you an idea of what information our group website has and how it can help you get the most out of it. -- -- Mark Emmer, P¨¢tzcuaro

Sticky Setting up an automatic signature for your messages 2
One of list owner David Haun's irritants is people who don't sign their messages, leaving it to others to puzzle out who the message is from. To make this easier, and to keep David happy, here's a tip on setting up an automatic signature for all your messages sent to the group. * Log into the website www.groups.io and go into the MichoacanNet group. * On the left hand menu, click on Subscription. It's the second item down. * In the Signature section, you can type your name and possibly your location if desired. You only have to do this once and it'll be on every message automatically. * Be sure to click on both boxes above so if you send a message either by email or on the website, the signature will show. * Scroll all the way down to the bottom of the page and hit Save to save your settings. Just log in and set it and forget it unless you want to change it later. David is a good guy, spending countless hours administering MichoacanNet. Let's keep him smiling. -- Mark -- This email has been checked for viruses by Avast antivirus software. https://www.avast.com/antivirus

help needed for the pantry at Sagrario
For those of you who are more inclined to help with your money rather than your hands (and we need both kinds of help!), the pantry at Sagrario (the church with the arches along Calle Lerin, in P¨¢tzcuaro) is either out completely or nearly out of the following: beans, powdered milk, rice, oatmeal, and oil. If you can help with any amount of any of these items, it would be very much appreciated! I will be at Sagrario tomorrow, between 12 and 2, and Mon-Thurs, there are generally other workers there between 11 and 1, at least. Thank you in advance for any help you can give, Kat

Twelve blockades in Morelia today 2
The CNTE and other supportive unions have Morelia traffic tied in knots today, with more demonstrations promised through Sunday. Twelve blockades with 20,000 union members expected. https://mimorelia.com/noticias/morelia/sindicalistas-inician-bloqueos-y-paralizan-morelia https://www.quadratin.com.mx/educativas/morelia-estima-cnte-20-mil-sindicalizados-en-bloqueos-de-este-miercoles/ We made it from P¨¢tzcuaro only with numerous Google Maps detours that took us on back streets we'd never seen before, up into Santa Maria and back down to Camelinas between choke points. Discovered that Google Maps is better than Waze for real-time updates of closed roads. Now to see if we can get home when all our passengers' appointments are done. -- Mark -- -- Mark Emmer, P¨¢tzcuaro

Voluntees Needed! 2
Greetings, Operacion Mascota / Auxiliando Animales volunteers! Operacion Mascota is hosting a major sterilization clinic this June!! And we're seeking volunteers to oversee post-op recovery of animals. This clinic will be unique in a few ways: - The number of sterilizations will be higher than in the past as we have 4 veterinarians performing sterilizations, so perhaps as high as 200 sterilizations! Consequently there is a need for a few more volunteers. - This clinic is FREE/GRATIS!! - The clinic will be held in Tzurumutaro Clinic Details Dates of Clinic - Friday June 6 & Saturday June 7 From 9am til 6-ish pm Location of Clinic: Jefetura de Tenecia Tzurumutaro (Same street as Segungo Primero) Morning shifts for both days begin at 8:30am. At that time, Dr. Manuel of Operacion Mascota will go over the post-op/recovery procedures. We will need some additional setup resources to show up at 8:00am on the first day. The morning shift will end at 1:15, with a 15-minute overlap with the afternoon shift. Afternoon shift begins at 1:00 and runs until around 6:00pm, or until the last patient is out of recovery. We would also like a few people to help with breakdown at the end of each day. Dr Manuel again will offer training for afternoon volunteers at 1pm. On Saturday we are hoping the afternoon volunteers can assist in clean-up/teardown and ideally 1 or 2 SUVs or trucks could be available to transport equipment back to centro Patzcuaro. Please let me know If you are available for a shift (or 2) and your preferred time. If you have a friend that may be interested, please pass their info along to me. With lots of folks gone for the summer, it may be a struggle to fill all the spots. Thanks again for your consideration, and enjoy this heavenly RAIN!!! Endocrinologist 3
A visitor is coming to Patzcuaro who has had great trouble getting an appointment with an endocrinologist in the US. The visit is only for a month, but I hope that an endocrinologist, ideally with specialization in thyroid physiology, can see this person once or twice in June. I am not good with the internet and I was unable to see whether the files of this group offer suggestions. I would welcome advice. At this time, we are interested only in conventional medicine. Thank you, Bernard

Appointment Needed at Morelia Immigration office 11
Used to be you could just walk in to the INM office between 9 am and 1 pm and take a number to be served. There's now a web page of a "New Model of Immigration Regulation Procedures" that offers the ability to make appointments on line. https://www.inm.gob.mx/mpublic/publico/inm-tramites.html Are appointments required? Can you no longer walk into the Moerlia office without an appointment? Thanks, Mark -- -- Mark Emmer, P¨¢tzcuaro

Tonight is the BEST view of........
"Tonight is the BEST view of the Milky Way. It will become increasingly visible near the end of May because of the moon¡¯s changing phases. Over the next few days, the moon will undergo its waning crescent phase, leaving only a small sliver of it visible from Earth. Then, on Monday, May 26, 2025, it will enter the New Moon phase, when it will be 0 percent illuminated and invisible in the sky. This is perfect for those who want to see the Milky Way."
