There seems to be a consensus that the publication has been in decline since Whil gave up being editor, and some speculated it was slated for termination.? Now it appears that the publishers, evidently with backing from MS, have decided to keep it around and are even giving it somewhat of a makeover.? See Ken Levy’s comments at ? |

Re: Fox Thoughts
开云体育Firstly - what is this "rebirth of FoxTalk" talk?? I subscribe, but haven't read the latest issue.? I've noticed its gotten thinner and thinner.
?
Secondly - I've done some .NET programming and the IDE is to kill for - MSFT hit it out of the park.? I think VFP people would find VB.NET a much closer fit?and pure JAVA people would find C# a closer match.? Both languages compile to the same code base so there isn't much/any speed advantage.
?
Kevin McNeish wrote the .NET for VFP people - and he has presented ad nauseum on .NET for VFPers at conferences.? He does a good job comparing C# and VB.NET.? He favors C#, but gives equal treatment?to both in his book.? I agree - it's an excellent book.
?
C# has strict typing and is?more anal like C++.? VB.NET allows more slop - isn't case sensitive, etc.
?
Long Live VFP.? Whil's pretty much abandoning VFP in favor of Linux.? However - one never knows Whil next move.? I'm disappointed that there seems to be such a defeatest attitude with Fox going forward.? It is an awesome tool!? We all know that.
?
Interesting ideas about how we can bolster VFP.? Personally, I'd like to see a private buyout of the developers and source code.? A second choice would be a Borland.? Then, develop better hooks into .NET AND, focus on a linux tailored version.
?
Corporate - fortune 2000 don't see the value in VFP.? That's one of the many problem.
?
Eric - when are you moving back?

?
One more thing about mono.? The home page is , and there's a free IDE available at .? I'm not sure why they didn't choose to use the open source Eclipse IDE for this project, but this might be something to check out for tonight's meeting. |

Re: Fox Thoughts
Einar Kvandahl
开云体育Just to add on to Eric's email. There is a great book from
Hentzenwerke called: ".Net for VFP developers". This book is a great
introduction book for .NET and is written by a VFP guru. The author seems to
favor C# and says that C# is probably the best choice for VFP developers, but he
compares C# and VB.NET objectively.
?
Also there is a toolkit, Visual Fox Pro toolkit for .NET,
?available for download from
The toolkit includes a lot of the good ol' foxpro functions
and commands and is a great starting point if you want to get into
.NET.

Fox Thoughts
Eric Selje
开云体育Hi All,Ever since I've been down here, I haven't been doing much FoxPro coding.? In fact some of the only fox code I've written down here was an effort to separate some tiers of an internet applicaton, and I actually removed some VFP code in favor of XSLT.? I've also used a lot of PERL, some Java, and much XSLT. This effort is wrapping up and I'm attempting reintegrate myself with VFP.? It's a lot like putting on your favorite sandals after a night out dancing in uncomfortable new shoes. Here's a few thoughts I've been having.? Please comment on them: - I wondered while I was away whether the whole world abandoned Fox.? You don't come across information about it casually, but as I've gone out looking it's reassuring to see that in fact it looks about as strong as ever (fwiw).?? The success of the WinE project won't guarantee VFP's future, however.? In my opinion, VFP will at some point have to be spun off either as an open-source project (unlikely) or sold to another developer if it ever wants to flourish as it once has.? Otherwise it will languish in its current role as the tool for enthusiasts and a necessary evil for those supporting legacy apps, but won't be picked up by newbies when they can use PHP/MySQL to write good enough apps.? Too bad, they'll never know how good they could have had it.? Efforts to kindle VFP with either WinE or, even better, an open-source clone of VFP will be interesting but ultimately unsuccessful.? I love the possible irony of an open-source clone sending Microsoft the way of Ashton-Tate. - It was interesting to read about the demise and rebirth of FoxTalk magazine.? It looks like they're going to reduce their subscription price, which is great, and also get some content from Microsoft itself. - There won't be any more Great Lakes Great Database Workshops (aka WhilFests), at least in their present form.? What conferences are you planning on going to?? With VFP 9 due out in the 2nd half of 2004, now would be a great time to get back to a conference.? I missed VFP8s' conferences and was thus unaware of the great ACTIVATE WINDOW puzzle command! - The VFP team is blogging.? Check out .? It could also be retrieved as an RSS feed, which means we could add their blogs to our madfox.info site or even the VFP Toolbox.? Anybody done much tweaking of the toolbox? That's all for now.? in 6.0 or 7.0. But you have the problem of language extensions in VFP 7.0 and VFP 8.0. P.J. -----Original Message-----
