¿ªÔÆÌåÓýActually, there were great lessons from the
meeting.
?
1.? Having backups is a good
idea.
2.? Five geeks together can make a problem much
worse than it is.
3.? Often, in the real world, it is something else
that is really wrong.
4.? Maintaining detachment is important, even when
it is three years of code at stake.
5.? When something goes wrong, the caffeine and
carbs consumption increases exponentially (banana peppers in my
case).
?
How
many times have you others run into this where something just craps out and you
beat your head against the wall for a LONG TIME only to learn that something
very different somehow happened to cause the problem at just the right time to
make it look like it was what you did.? It certainly SEEMED like explorer
was at fault, and after defragging without a surface scan, a bad sector sure
sounded plausable.? So breaking the system into the smallest pieces
possible would have helped here (read - safe mode, NO NETWORK).? When I get
wierd problems like this I will often strip a system down to just MB & video
card to see if things get better, adding?cards and software one at a
time.
?
I'd
been wanting to get SUSE 9 installed and was happy to see just how clean it
was.? Jim's suggestion of making a catalogue of hardware is GREAT and I am
going to attempt to follow through on it for my own installs.? And I'm
hoping Jim will follow through with his idea of getting the definitive wine
config info from Will.? I haven't done a dual boot system and am really
impressed with how LILO handles this, not even needing to boot from an active
partition or a primary partition.
?
It
seems like we are really close to being able to do FOX over Linux.? I
really like the idea of demos involving installing linux, wine, and vfp on a
system and will volunteer my notebook since I can restore my win2k image so
easily from CD.? If we could get wine set up properly and then just make an
RPM from the finished install, we could probably do the whole thing in around an
hour, having time to actually do some fox on the test
platform.
