port #2

Art, I have a mill that works fine on port #1. I am trying to setup a
lathe that requires wave drive and it also works fine on port #1. I
am trying to change either to port #2 so that I don't need a db25
switch. It seems like I can't change the wave drive lathe to port #2
or at least I can't find a way to designate the port. Changing the
mill to port #2 that uses a card with an address of b400 and b800
doesn't work. The port resets when I make a change in device manager
so it looks like the system recognizes it (I hear the motors go clunk)
but I can't get any output. I remembered to also change the enable
signals to port 2 also.

Any hints? Bhy the way, the search engine seems to be down. I keep
getting a message that my search returned more than 5000 hits. Must
be a yahoo problem...

Scanning file

michele russo

I need help!!
I have tried to simulate scanning a surface with touch
probe using the wizard that i found with Mach2.
Scanning file works fine but i saw that final surface
definition file looks like as a series of line with
X-Y-Z value without X-Y-Y letters.
How can i process or add g-code and Xs Ys Zs to the
file for make the tool replicate original shape?
Thanks

Re: Strange

Could it have gotten "lost" on a Y axis move/command, perhaps?
Just a thought.

It sounds like something in the OS froze up. I've seen that before with various applications.
(Windows does weird things, sometimes.)

Hi George:

Hmm, that a new one. IT all OK otherwise? Ive never actually run Mill programs in Turn, but Ill give some a try...

Thanks,

I downloaded Mach 3.
I opened TURN.
I mistakenly loaded a G code file created for Mach 2 Mill.
My computer took off to never never land.
5 minutes later my hard disk light was still on and the computer
still away. I had to do a hot boot.

Re: Tool change and speed control boxford lathe

You may want to consider using a pulse and direction interface and going with a device like this:

WinVNC does a good job of that - provided you are not using the parallel
port ;)

I can see I am going to have major problems installing Mach3 on any of
my normal machines. The 'rule' seems to be that the test program 'fails'
if there are ANY embedded functions on the motherboard :(

Since I'm using embedded graphics in every slave machine and nowadays
finding a low profile PCI graphics card is dam near impossible it looks
like I am stuck with supplying large footprint computers rather than the
stock ITX boxes. The idea was good, network cable back to the desk,
monitor progress via WinVNC and setup the next job direct from the CAD
system. Still big box machines are not expensive just a pain to have to
mount up.

As soon as I find *ONE* machine here that will run the test program I
may be able to start finding a source of motherboards I can use :)

Hi
This may not help since I'm in Canada but I found a very low end (price
wise) PCI video card so there are some around. I'll include the link and
maybe you can source it there., unless it's some kind of house brand.

Re: Origin at the center

Home the machine to the switches, move to the center of your machine
and put these coordinates into one of the work coordinates
(G55,G56,etc). The next time you start your machine up, home it to the
switches, command G55 (or wherever you put the coordinates) then a G0
X0 X0YO and the machine will move to the center.

Screen size

I have upgraded to version 1.90.040 and now my screen is not sized
correctly. It is the correct width but the it is shorter vertically. I
now have a large gray gap at the bottom of the screen. Is there
something in the setup that I may need to do?

Thanks

Re: Art, how are you.......

Glad to hear that it is going good for you and that you are getting
some motorbike time in!!!

I know a while ago you posted some pics of your lathe conversion
before it was completed, have you ever posted pics since it was
completed?

As you are now in the world of self-employed (Um, I mean retired), I
will offer you this advice.....

Make sure you take the time to do ALL the other things that you
enjoy. Otherwise, the works of passion consume you to the point of
it becomming your worst "Work nightmare".

Hi Chris:

it's time we all got an update on you :-)

My lord, it has been 6 months hasnt it. Time fly's. :)

How is the lathe conversion coming along - is it cutting parts
yet?

It has cut quite a few. Unfortunatley, I destroyed the tailstock
and am
now rebuilding this one with parts from Emco. I have a new casting
(the old
one cracked off on an old crack.. The Slug was badly deformed and
split the
casting all to heck. However, another week or so and I can go back
to
playing, just waiting on final parts. I gotta say... I love my
emco. Best
tool Ive ever used. For a small lathe , its incredibly nice to
use, and
very powerfull. Never had a lost step, and its very accurate. I
find Ive
been enjoying it alot when I get a chance to use it. :)

How is the retired life treating you?
Is that what this is ,..retirement? As I know you probably did
suspect, I
got busier than ever. Of course, I took way too much on, figuring
Id have so
much more time. In actual fact I dug quite a hole. BUT now I seem
to be
filling it in nicely. LazyCam is starting to work very well,
(Thanks to
Brians hard work and efforts..), and now that PlugIns are
promising to do
fantastic thing with others being able to chip in, the workload is
actually
starting to reduce. Mach seems more popular than ever, now has
over 5000
users , and I feel, for the first time in a very long time, a real
pride in
whats been done on a day to day basis. All in all, I have to say
if this is
retirement, Im all for it. Nothing better than doing what you
really like to
do.

I know you are probably spending countless hours out on the beach
sipping beers and spending weeks at a time riding the Norton and so
on, but if you have a moment, I sure would like to know how retired
life is treating you ;-)

Actually, its a Yamaha VStar 1100, but yes, Im actually riding
it more
than normal. (Of course till this year, normal wasnt
alot. :) ), but Im
looking forward to the summer, things are greening up here, and
it will
be my first summer in 25 years to myself, and while I dont
intend to
really take much of a break, I can say its been enjoyable so
far, and
promises to be for the next year. I find I can actually get
things done
these days, even support is much slower than normal, ( though
thats
something that varies from month to month. ). I now know why
people like
yourself and Mariss always sound so chipper, even when
obviously in the
heat of the virtual oven, being your own boss is an experience
like no
other.. hard to imagine being anything else. (Though the boss
is still a
prick and works me too hard. :) )
Thanks
Art

Chris

(knowing all to well Art is probably working more hours now than
prior
to retiring)

You called that one right!.

Re: Art EMI and Loosing Steps Update

art

Hi:

. With the fault wires
changed to the breakout board when the buffer reaches 100% I see
all Axis stop, till the buffer goes down. My Question is, The buffer causing
the lost steps and if so How can I increase it capacity?
Im not sure I get this one. What did you feed trhe fault back to? No matter what you hook a gecko fault line to I cant see any effect on the buffer. The buffer shoudl not hit 100% excepot at the beginning or end of a particular movement. If it does, then its a sign the computer is too slow, but thats pretty rare.

The Ball screws have no bind when turn by hand so I don't think there a bind
I was just cutting air. I can try to stop the head from moving it over power
me so it seems they have good power
That sounds normal..

Also X axis seem to dither when stopped not all the time I tried adjusting
it clears up and comes back the Y axis sings a little not bad like a pig
Singing is quite normal, dithering visable is not. Its a sign the gain or damping is misadjusted.

squeal turning down counter clockwise the limit on the current stops this.
Thats turning off you power or torque. You shoudlnt do that. As I understand it , after settign the gain and damping, the last step is turnign thatone pretty mcuh CW, and it shoudlnt dither at that point. That pot is the max current, and it shoudl be good almost anywhere. Id see abotu adjusting the gain and damping as per Mariss's specifications to stop the dithering, and I woudlnt worry about singing. My servos sing a bit, but cut great.

I'm using Gecko 320. Are the trim adjustment clockwise for the limit or
counter clockwise?
CCW is off, or lowest setting. CW is highest. I start max CCW myself and turn CW , but again, best to read Mariss's white papers on that, Id hate to pass you my bad habits..

I turned the limit adjustment clockwise to max and still
loosing steps I believe it has to be in the adjustment of the motor causing
some of the problem. it still machinea a good period before it acts up .I
think the buffer has to do with this and the tuning.
Thanks Randy
Losing steps on a servo usually means noise on encoder lines, or on the step lines, not much else can cause lost steps on a servo. They correct quite well under almost all circumstances. But if the gain is off, they can look like they lost tspes, then pick the back up on next move. Sounds lieka proper adjustment is required..
