Could it have gotten "lost" on a Y axis move/command, perhaps?
Just a thought.
It sounds like something in the OS froze up. I've seen that before with various applications.
(Windows does weird things, sometimes.)

I downloaded Mach 3.
I opened TURN.
I mistakenly loaded a G code file created for Mach 2 Mill.
My computer took off to never never land.
5 minutes later my hard disk light was still on and the computer
still away. I had to do a hot boot.
